Sproket's WIP

Love the shading on the dark side of his hat. Can I ask you how you accomplished this? Is it just a glaze of dark over it? Or did you cross hatch it or something, because it almost has a texture to it. Thanks!

It's built up with a combination of glazes & stippling. There is a bit of texture in there from the stippling. It's the first time I've done that, I would usually put all my efforts into getting a smooth finish.

I was going to guess stippling but it just looked too smooth for that. Makes sense that it was both stippled and glazed. Awesome job there. When stippling, is the consistency of the paint less diluted for you than normal?

Very nice work there Dave! Talk of the devil and all I that me and lee were discussing your work yesterday and how good the bust was looking and wether you were going to post anything as you hadn't for a while and then lo and behold you post a most impressive update. I love the super saturated take you have on your minis if I tried to do that I would look garish but when you do it you get that smooth sumptuous look that is some how both refined and delicate and yet it leaps out at you from the cabinet bravo sir!

Loving the skin tones you've got going on here, so smooth...as is every other colour and area. Love using this word; superb!

I would usually dilute my paint for stippling the same as 'normal' painting but on the hat it is less dilute so the texture could build up.

Stippling is highly variable technique that can give a whole range of effects both subtle & bold. I put together a brief guide to my take on stippling a while ago. For anyone interested it can be found HERE.

I think the super saturated look is my default setting and the result of first learning to paint minis in the late 80's. It was all about maximum impact back then.

Wow, that bust just looks better and better with each update. Just incredible work.

BFK, the tutorial images show up on my computer. Maybe you've got a firewall blocking them or try using a different browser.

That's looking absolutely superb. I love the strong direction of the light source, the shadowing is absolutely perfect. Enjoying how this is progressing :)

yeah you're probably right. I am using my iPhone and so this is probably responsible. Though it's just misleading because the message says that the photos were "moved or deleted," compelling one to believe that the author took them away. Ahh well thanks for that :(

I've made a start on the parrot but it's proving to be a lot of work to get it looking how I want! The main issue is the yellow. I started out with a shade that turned out to be too bright and too cool - its more a lemon yellow than a golden yellow. I'll have to put that one down to experience.
Things are getting better as I work reds & purples into the shadows and that helps tie the parrot to the rest of the bust. I still have a lot of work to do and I really need to improve the definition as I go along.
