Standard how to

I y\'all, there is no end of inspiration within these pages :bouncy:

I could not find it in the forums, so I have to start a new thread...
I got a few Brets to do for one of my \'\'games buddy\" and I wad wondering how to give them nice standard.
I\'m talking about making them, not painting them ( For that, he.. I\'ll do my best, I guess.)
Seems really simple but I\'m clueless...

And for those motivated CMON contributors, that would be a nice article to add...

Anyone got tips here ?

Yup.

There are even several sites with historical banners on them that are scaled and colored for 28mm.

Use a good paper though - 20-30lb bond works best for me.

Do them simple to start. Pick your base color for the army sat red and blue. The do all the Knights in every variation of them. No for the banner if youve seen the Bret book get some tin foil from a cofee can or whatever and quarter it in the red and blue (or whatever color you picked)

Next paint a big fluer de lis in white or yellow in the middle. If you cant draw one then down load one. Print it out. Cut out the drawing and whats left is your template.

Now you do this for all the knight units but change the pattern and for Errannt no border on the Standard. Knights of the relm get a border in the samr color as the fluer di lis, Quseting get a border thats fancy and grails get a grail instead of a fluer.

Helps tie the army together as well. So as long as a knight has either the red or the blue they will all tie in to the army theme.

I\'m not too sure about paper, seems too fragile to me. Do you give it some treatment, like cover them with glue or varnish ?
Maybe tin foil would do.
Do you make epoxy banners, too ? Seems more durable, any tips on that?

@ Ogrebane: That\'s a good scheme, guess it\'s what is usually done. Their questing, so I\'ll do the fancy border thing. I was thinking about doing stencils for the fleur de lys and such, not quite freehand, but less \"cheating\" than prints or transfers.
I\'ll throw in some wip as soon as I made some progress. ( Right now I\'m still waiting for those guys.)

Wait a minute... GW makes \"Grail knights\" but they\'ve disqualified GD entries for having \"Christian imagery\"?

I guess they\'re the only ones who are allowed to steal lol

I use a heavier paper than your normal printer paper - and when doubled it works pretty well. I\'ve got the dwarf banners from GW printed out and am going to paint them up - I\'ll post them when I get a chance.

you could always try sticling the print out on some tin sheet with pva. watch out - the edges are very sharp. then cut it to shape when the glue is dry.

for gs standards, roll out the putty on a piece of cling film and then leave for about 30mins. then cut it and bend it to shape. you will need something to support it while it cures though - like bluetack covered in cling film

Edit: About the Pewter sheet stuff he talks about, does anyone know where to get it, is it available in a hardware store ?

Edit: found my mistake, I did a search with Standard, instead of banner.

@NSA: When did this happen? I am curious now. Do you have a link to a picture of the \"offensive\" model?

for banners without tons of folds i use thin plasticard shaped with a flame. it takes some toying but the end result is very durable, and it makes for a nice painting surface.

there was a daemon prince i believe that caused a fracas because they banned it from an american golden daemon comp. someone sent me the pic and it all seemed to be a storm in a teacup if you ask me. why they had to ban it i have no idea

that was victor hardy\'s daemon prince, and it was in the UK golden daemon, 2004 I think. It wasn\'t disqualified because of christian imagery exactly - the problem was that the banner had images that were directly catholic in nature, and could be deemed offensive. Although GW does have links to Christianity, I think the issue was that victor\'s banner was based directly on catholic imagery, and not on the watered down, second hand version in the GW universe. I never saw it though, all the pics have been removed after victor requested they be taken down, because he was plannng to re-enter the modified model in the future. I searched long and hard for a photo, I was so curious about it, so if anyone has one let me know I\'d love to see it!
