Starting Over

OK, here\'s what I\'m attempting to do... make a list of every supply necessary for modelling and painting. I have recently moved, and and am starting completely from scratch this time around.

No mess, no clutter, just pure, organized painting space, and I want to make as comprehensive a list as possible. Which is were you come in.

Everything, no matter how trivial, that you need, please post it. Wet pallettes, dremel accessories, thinners, types, sizes, and manufacturers of brushes, random things around the house that have proven useful, etc. Please, be specific. Thank you.

In addition to NSA\'s list, I\'d add (and edit as I think of things);

Modelling and assembly
- Brass wire or simple paperclips - for pinning of course.
- More X-acto knife blades - blades are safest and best when they\'re the sharpest.
- Liquid two-part epoxy glue - use this stuff when pinning for serious strength.
- Green stuff - two part epoxy putty, but better for detail work than the general purpose stuff. Get the general stuff too, it\'s wonderful for bases.

Brushes
- Painting brushes - personal preference, but I use size 000, 0 and 1. Windsor & Newton Series 7 and Sceptre Gold, and Daler Rowney / Robert Simmons white sable, those are my choices, usually based on availablity.
- Drybrushing brushes - Any old junk you have, cut the tip so that it\'s blunt and the bristles are rigid. Or Daler Rowney cat\'s tongue brushes for overbrushing - superb!

Painting media
- Flow improver - Winsor & Newton Acrylic Flow Improver - I won\'t paint without it
- Future floor wax (or equivalent) - there\'s a good reason it\'s called the miracle wash medium.
- Drying retarder - get a good liquid one, not a gel. Not too useful unless you want to do wet blending.

Lighting
- Some good, bright daylight incandescent bulbs, you might need around 120W worth
or better yet
- Cool white power compact lamps - 60W should be plenty
or better yet
- 6500K daylight power compact lamps - I use 72W of these strip lamps, and for colour production and brightness, they\'re magnificent. A left over from marine fishkeeping where quality lighting is of exceptional importance.
(power compact are the same things as those energy saving lamps)

Miscellaneous
- A big glass jar for rinse water - some would advocate using distilled water, depending on where you are in the world.
- A big glass jar filled with brake fluid - lovely stuff for stripping paint. Others prefer other things, brake fluid just works for me.
- A painting shirt - I have some shirts that I wear specifically when painting. They\'re the handiest rags to have around ;)

Both commentators have missed out two primary ingredients:
1) Money
2) A S.O. who is tolerant of the hobby/addiction/obsession.

The existance of the second implies the lack of the first. I\'d suggest getting set up for painting before the second makes its diabolical encroachment on painting space, painting time and painting money.

To add further to the list:

- A comfortable working area. It doesn\'t have to be large, but comfortable is important or you won\'t be able to work long hours.

- Good lighting. One or two bright lamps. Not too strong, though, since that would produce a lot of heat that can screw up your paints and make painting sweaty.

- A pot of fresh made coffee for your all-night painting sessions! :D (at least I find that useful...)

Some more additions...

Some of these are more for the show of a mini, so not needed exactly:

Additional Supplies:

*static grass (pure bright green, and a mixed bag of orange, brown, green)
* fake snow (techstar) or a link to the site that shows you how to make fake snow (forgot link :( it\'s at home)
* sand
* rocks (screw styrofoam on bases, if you want it to look like a rock, use a damn real one!)
* bases

Paints:

*some crappy craft paints for coating bases...why waste Vallejo paint for that? :)

Brushes:

* a hooked brush (one where the hairs have made a hook)...sad as it sounds, they are good for some hard to reach areas. Make sure it\'s a crappier brush and not a good one :)

One of the most important things seem to have been overlooked.

A PC with internet connection (preferably Broadband) and a CMON account.
Priceless.:D
