My list would have included sephiroths sword, clouds buster sword and aurons masamune final weapon from ff10.

Also blades sword (it looked a bit poor) but had the spikes that shot out when other people grabbed it.

Excalibur would have been higher up!!

Anduril would have replaced sting.

The sword Ferrus manus made Fulgrim would have been there as its the best sword in 40k.

Hiro\'s sword would have been here from heroes.

Erm thats all i can think of atm

Which one are you referring to, braveheart or Excalibur?
The one made by the small person two days younger than I, with a somewhat obvious Anglophobic trait.

Its in the Horus Heresy novel \'Fulgrim\'.

The story is that as young primarchs fulgrim and ferrus manus both claimed to be the best weapon smiths the imperium had ever seen, so a competition ensued in which ferrus made the best sword ever seen, a gold curved blade that fulgrim used until he found the deamon sword in the laer temple. Ferrus made the sword and fulgrim made the seigebreaker hammer both said the others was better and presented them as gifts for each other

Personally I think this list is pants. More than a few entries shouldn\'t even have made a top-20 list, much less be in the top ten.

...if I remember right just kinda thru the scabard off when it was fight time.
Yes, you can definitely do this with Japanese scabbards. They only fit tightly at the mouth, due to the copper/alloy/gold fitting just above the guard, very loose fit to the blade itself (ideally not touching it at all in fact, along the entire length).

As far as campy fantasy flick swords go, how can you beat the 3 bladed sword Lee Horsley wielded in \"The Sword and the Sorcerer\"? The blades were projectiles!

Looks like we have to make our own list. Cause I think the list sucks, we have mentioned so many greater swords and not one of them is mentioned....

@Friar: If you ever get the hands on a Nodachi, be careful. A friend of mine has a damascene Nodachi. He cut his kitchen table (Ikea) in two half by accident. Well guess I should have told him that a kitchen is not the right spot to do Iaido...

If were talking UK swords I\'d rather have a Cav Trooper 1908 Pattern sword, or an officers 1912 Pattern sword -

Wicked nasty effective swords.

lol well never heard of a more fitting end to ikea furniture :D tho I doubt I\'ll ever get one closest thing I have to a sword is a pocket knife.

I can\'t believe there isn\'t a Spatha, as that very sword was used by Celts and Rome, evolving into the Vikingsverd and eventually ended up as the ancestor of the Medieval Norman longsword. Obviously more successful than the Katana/Wakazashi/No Dachi (after studying Iaido for 7 years then moving on to study western sword fighting forms I know which swords I favour).

I do agreee about the teen erection/Lion-o sword. I just wonder what people will make of lightsabers as a phallic substitute.

Nuclear tallywhacker of doom, anyone?

now it looks like we\'re getting two lists together, greatest swords of history and greatest swords of fiction :)

OT but... I\'m not sure if we should really consider the typical Northern European broadsword from the 8th-10th centuries as truly a lineal descendant of the spatha. Apart from the huge gulf in time, during the Migration period designs went in all sorts of directions. It\'s a stretch but it\'s kind of like saying a horse-drawn coach is the ancestor of the Jeep.

Once we get to the recognisable \'Viking blade\' style they\'re quite different forms and are in fact swords of a completely different type: long, slim and parallel-sided v. much broader and tapering. And then of course there\'s the fuller, which is such a significant feature of the Northern European blade of the early-mediaeval period, contrasting with the form of Celtic & Roman long swords which were flat (?) or diamond in section.

I don\'t think it\'s obvious - more successful in what way? There are numerous ways of defining that and I\'m not sure I\'d agree with any of them :)

I have to say, many a sword buff, European and Japanese, think the classic Shinto blade form is a pinnacle of aesthetics married to functionality.

In referenace to the nodachi (god I love 7 samurai), I read in a book on samurai outfits/weapons that this sword was used by infantry as a defensive offence against cavalry. Hold the sword tip down till the horse is close, flip up, bear down. And a whole lot of horses get three feet shorter.

As badass as the nodachi is, it\'s hard to argue with the fact that naginata and other polearms do the job better :D
