Because I was a T.V. addict as a lad when I got married (21 years ago) my wife a I vowed we would never have a T.V.
When our darling daughters came along we decided depriving them was unfair, so we ended up with a monitor(only plays video/dvd).
As a result they have generally only seen \"quality movies\",which in turn has given them real discernment when it come to good movies.
Sadly when I occasionally watch T.V. now I am horrified how bad it is, most of it is GARBAGE FOR THE MASSES(strong stuff eh!)

I was wondering if there are others out in CMON land who have also plucked out \"Satans eye\", from their dwellings and banished the T.V.

GOD bless...........VINCENTI

P.S. I have travelled the world and junk T.V. doesnt seem to be just a Brit phenomanom.!!!

I don\'t have a TV, havn\'t had one for over a year now (Im 19 now)
If there is anything i really want to watch, which is quite rare (but Sopranos and recently Heroes comes to mind) I just download them.

Prefer to listen to the radio these days.

And for all the people who think they couldn\'t live without a TV, try it, I found i had a lot more time to do more constructive things.

We also are limited to just watching movies on the TV or on the computer. The house is wonderfully quiet. The kids play outside, they are not fat, they read, and we all paint together.

Stopped watching TV three years ago. I and my girlfriend found we were wasting too much time watching things we weren\'t even remotely interested in. So, now we keep the TV only plugged into the DVD player to watch films. It\'s amazing how much more time we\'ve got for other things and how little we miss TV.

Plus we don\'t have to pay for a TV license! Though we keep getting letters threateniong to send the \'heavies\' round, but they never come round.
The amount of letters they send is unbelievable, they really are just keeping themselves in a job. I just don\'t think they realise that people CAN live without moving wallpaper.

No TV for 5 years. Just whatever Netflix can provide.
2 exceptions: Seahawks games and races. I go over and actually talk to other human beings at there house when I want to watch those.

I think when I find my own place <Mumble mumble mumble>

I wouldn\'t bother with a TV (Also the cost of the damn TV license (is uk the ONLY country that has this?))

There are a few programs I DO like, but most of them are on Sky, so I wouldn\'t be able to get them even if I could have one lol

However, my dad\'s just bought a new 32\" LCD tv for some reason, so now I can watch neighbours in widescreen :D lol
(mmm Skye)

Anyway - as I said, there are only really a few programs I actually try to watch if I can.

Lost (Although it\'s getting a bit silly (Sky1))

24 (When I can be bothered (Sky1))

Heroes (I\'ve seen a few times, but I think I\'d need to watch from the beginning - maybe I\'ll get it on DVD (Sky1))

Daybreak (Recently discovered this - sort-of like Groundhog day mixed with 24)

NCIS (GREAT characters - new series starting soon (FX))

And the only terrestrial program that I watch at the moment is

Life on Mars (BBC 1)

It actually sounds like a lot when I list them like that though! lol

No T.V. for me.

Hi vincenti,
I\'m here to testify that my T.V. is history. Angel and I chucked our tube a few months back and all I can say is that life is better without the thing. I guess for some people owning a T.V. isn\'t a problem-they can control their watching, and it isn\'t really an issue-but for me I used to get stuck behind the little screen for hours on end without anything but a sense that I\'d just dumbed myself down a little from watching it (especially big brother). Over the weekend while visiting Angels (my girlfriends) relatives Angel and I found ourselves glued to the tube late Sunday afternoon. We lost over an hour of our lives aimlessly surfing the channels. Finally, I clicked the off button on the remote and declared that we were going for a nice late-Sunday afternoon stroll.

Admittedly, I\'ve downloaded some episodes of \'Heroes\', as my younger brother was raving on about this show and I had to find out what all the fuss was about. It\'s pretty cool. Aside from that, these days it\'s live streaming Jazz radio direct from Paris that graces our apartment while we work on our languages etc. If you like Jazz, I highly recommend you stream this: http://www.tsfjazz.com/player/tsfjazzlive.php?p=wmp

It\'s much better than \'Survivor\', Neighbours, or some of the dreadful Taiwanese soaps blasting out in the background. That\'s just my opinion anyway.

T.V. Killers of the world, let us unite and talk about anything but what\'s going on in Sex In The City. Okay-that\'s enough digression for one night. Time to mix some paints and listen to some jazz.

See ya in the soup,
Chris

See ya

There is a TV in our house (it is shared accommodation you see) but I don\'t ever watch it. My landlord and his girlfriend spend each weekend glued to on demand episodes of Hollyoaks and other stuff that makes bile rise, so I tend to hide away in my room!

I, like others here, download anything I really want to watch, and thus can avoid the plethora of crap that is on telly these days.

Having said that I can still consume a fair bit of TV and films, quite often a whole series (up to 24 45 minute episodes) or three or four films in a day.

Recently I have done a fair bit of viewing what with BSG season 3 coming to a close, Lost finally getting interesting again, Heroes getting better and better with each episode, Prison Break season 2 finishing up. Also checked out Blood Diamond, The Illusionist, School for Scoundrels and Flushed Away.

Reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman, which I have blitzed my way through in the last few days, was a more rewarding and enjoyable bit of entertainment than all of that stuff put together though. One of the best books I\'ve ever read. I had no idea he was such a good author, as I always knew him for his comics. Be sure to check it out whilst not watching TV folks!

I\'ve got a TV and i watch it but not nearly as i once did. There just is very little worth watching any more and honestly i find myself watching the history and discovery channel more and more when i do watch TV. Things might be different if i had kids however.

Iono@ I just picked up American Gods the other day and blew through the first 200 pages in a few days. I knew Gaiman mostly from his comics so i was also suprised at how smooth and easy his novel is to read and a damn fine and interesting read at that. I picked it up really to just see what he wrote about Cairo with Ibis and Anubis since that area of Southern Illinois is where i\'m originally from. I recomend this book as well if you want a good read.

The fella from LoM pretty much sums up what TV is all about now, entertaining the masses, cheaply.

Yeah, I got American Gods after enjoying reading Neverwhere. I will definately be getting more of his stuff, he has a really great imagination and awesome modern fairy tale kinda fantasy style.

Oh, I still have a 15 quid Amazon voucher from Christmas I can use to get some more. Excellent!

My sister is addicted to TV, will watch any shit that is on! Smallville, Hollyoaks (Lono was right), FRIENDS... Jesus. I only watch a few quality David Attenborough programmes whenever they\'re on (which is rarely :(), House and ER. If there is a good drama on I\'ll watch that (I actually enjoyed Bleak House and Jane Eyre :D), but mostly I prefer books and films. I can recommend Brighton Rock by Graham Greene - fantastically written - and Joseph Conrad\'s Heart of Darkness as two books I\'ve recently read. I got my sister Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman for Christmas, but she hasn\'t read it yet...

Isn\'t strange how some people look at you differently when you tell them that you:-
A) Do not watch Big Brother, X Factor, I\'m a Celebrity get me...or any other \"Reality program\"
b)Think all soaps are the last refuge for has been and talentless actors.
c) Prefer to read a good book (*)
d) Generally watch a good movie via DVD.

Stuff I do tend to watch:
New Yankee Workshop (Man do I wanna play in with his Big Boy toys :D)
Watercolours with Charles Evans He\'s an artist resident in Northumberland so I can relate to the places he visits and paints.
Time Team
Inside the Actors Studio (Don\'t laugh it can be very interesting and funny. ie Russell Crowe has a giggle like a schoolgirl.)
Miami Ink Some great inspiration for freehand there.
Most Haunted Ok It\'s garbage but addictive. :D
The Dresden Files I\'m blaming Donna (Wiccanpony ) for that. :D

(* Since Neil Gaiman has been mentioned in this thread I\'ll admit to being a fan (courtesy of Sandman) and have recently finished both Neverwhere & Smoke & Mirrors. The latter is a collection of his Short Stories. Not all are \"Comfortable Reads\" and in some cases he reminds me of Ian Banks. Definitley not a book to lend to the Maiden Aunts.
Just finished (today) Coyote & Coyote Rising by Alan Steele Mainstream Sci-fi at it\'s best. Now need to get Coyote Frontier to complete the story.
After that the first 10 Master & Commander Books by Patrick O\'Brian (Superb special deal from The Book People.)
Looks as if I\'m getting back into reading again. ;) )
