Tamiya acylics

How do Tamiya acylics compare to some of the other brands such as P3, Reaper and Vellejo? I've been using all 3 and some GW but I've used Tamiya smoke, which gives some really nice effects and I'm just wondering if it's worth investing in some of their other normal colours.

Plus I like the twist off tops too, and that there is a colour code on top, which will make them easier to find on my paint table. Something I absolutely hate about P3 is the flip tops of their paint pots. I'm finding they eventually break and then when I go to flip it off the lid falls off and I get paint all over the place as the lids rolls down my clothes. Maybe I'm just clumsy? I do like P3 paints so I put up with this minor annoyance, though it would be nice to be able to open a paint pot without having to take extreme care.

Personally, I found them too glossy for my taste. But I love Smoke. I had a bottle for ages, just used it for the first time recently, and it's my new favourite.

The Tamiya clear colours are super but skip the normal colours, they're fine for airbrushing but not great for brush application. There should be lots of things higher on the "Let me try one of those..." list :cute:

yeah i have tried using them brush on and HATE them. figured they were geared more for airbrush but haven't had the chance to try yet

as mentioned the clears are great though. esp smoke and red (a MUST have for any gore)

Thanks for the replies. I saw a review on line and they said the same thing. Good for airbrush but horrible normal brush on application as the paint tends to dry really quickly and makes a mess. I picked up the red clear for that blood effect I've seen on here.

Beware of the label... Tamiya's acrylic range isn't truly acrylic.. just labeled so to make them appear safe. From an AFV POV they thin much better with the lacquer thinner (yellow top) compared to the regular acrylic thinner (white top). I'm guessing some portion of them is lacquer based.

On another note, Tamiya Enamels are excellent.

The Tamiya paints I think are acrylics, just acrylic solution paints, not suspensions.

Most hobby colours aren't acrylics either despite how they're named, they're vinyl paints (not that this makes any difference to us in practice).

I've seen quite a few people saying that they love "smoke". What do you actually use it for as I do find it very gloosy as well?
