I really liked \"The Last Samurai\" as a Tom Cruise movie, unfortunately Tom Cruise was the worst part about it.
The last of the Samurai ended up dying out in northern Japan. Known as the White Tigers most ended up commiting Seppuku when they were defeated. There is a very good book by Stephen Turnbull about Samurai (the man actually has about 40 odd) which talks about the last 3 Samurai revolts.
Best movies.

Sorry but i am a big fan of japanese movies.
Special mention to Black hawk Down and We were Soldiers. Getting a narrative into 2 battles was actually a very good effort.

Black Hawk Down was a great film. I just watched 3:10 to Yuma and found it to be a very good western.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has it all.
Great action, great scenery, a story that women would watch, and beautiful stars.
And Li Mu Bai is a jedi. Deny it.

For me it means the film has to have all of the following in some measure: quality acting & direction (hard to spot the second sometimes); be shot beautifully; have good music (and it must be used well - q.v. Hitchcock on this) and having something unique about it, even if it\'s just something subtle like style/look/atmosphere, definitely helps. Some contenders:
