exilesjjb posted a tutorial on using Army Painter to quickly complete a group of Cadain Shock Troops. It piqued my interest and I've now decided to paint up some Imperial Guard to sell. I got a box of Cadian Shock Troops and a Heavy Weapons team. The squad loadout is: 1 sergeant, 1 vox, 1 special weapon(grenade launcher), 5 standard troops- I took the remaining 2 cadians and conscripted them to fill out 2 different heavy weapons teams- autocannon and rocket launcher.
First off, a shot of a selection of Cadians from the whole crew:
The top pair is the heavy weapons team for the autocannon and the second pair will be for the rocket launcher. Since the guys actually wielding the weapons had to be crouched, I was force to use regular standing guys from the cadian force to complete the two man crew. I'll be doing something fancy to both heavy weapons bases to make the standing guys work with the crouching ones, like having one guy standing up behind a wall with the other shooting from around the corner. The last guy in the pic is the sergeant.
I painted basecoat of the cloth, skin, and armor before giving them a good coat with Army Painter- painted on, not dipped. Even so, I found some areas, like on the sargeant, where the AP pooled into a bit of a mess. Luckly that only happened on places for most of the minis where the darkest shadows will be, so a little layering will fix the problem. Next time I use AP I'll be a little more careful.
This guy shows how the final skintones and uniform will look. He's my test piece, all the others will get this same treatment over the weekend:
The boots and belt will eventually be painted as leather, and I've also got the armor, metallics, and all of the details left to paint. Also, I didn't add any of the extra bits like canteens and such to these guys- those will be painted seperately and added on when the figures have been completed.
