The Cadians Are Coming!

exilesjjb posted a tutorial on using Army Painter to quickly complete a group of Cadain Shock Troops. It piqued my interest and I've now decided to paint up some Imperial Guard to sell. I got a box of Cadian Shock Troops and a Heavy Weapons team. The squad loadout is: 1 sergeant, 1 vox, 1 special weapon(grenade launcher), 5 standard troops- I took the remaining 2 cadians and conscripted them to fill out 2 different heavy weapons teams- autocannon and rocket launcher.

First off, a shot of a selection of Cadians from the whole crew:

ig1.jpg

The top pair is the heavy weapons team for the autocannon and the second pair will be for the rocket launcher. Since the guys actually wielding the weapons had to be crouched, I was force to use regular standing guys from the cadian force to complete the two man crew. I'll be doing something fancy to both heavy weapons bases to make the standing guys work with the crouching ones, like having one guy standing up behind a wall with the other shooting from around the corner. The last guy in the pic is the sergeant.

I painted basecoat of the cloth, skin, and armor before giving them a good coat with Army Painter- painted on, not dipped. Even so, I found some areas, like on the sargeant, where the AP pooled into a bit of a mess. Luckly that only happened on places for most of the minis where the darkest shadows will be, so a little layering will fix the problem. Next time I use AP I'll be a little more careful.

This guy shows how the final skintones and uniform will look. He's my test piece, all the others will get this same treatment over the weekend:

The boots and belt will eventually be painted as leather, and I've also got the armor, metallics, and all of the details left to paint. Also, I didn't add any of the extra bits like canteens and such to these guys- those will be painted seperately and added on when the figures have been completed.

Yes, the glossiness is from the AP. I'm going to spray them with matte varnish which will kill it without ruining the color. Once I finish off my test piece I'll varnish him so you can see the full effect without all the gloss.

Heh... reminds me of magic items in morrowind.

I finished my first test piece for the Cadians. I'll be using the same colors and techniques on the rest of them. I haven't sprayed him with matte varnish yet, so there's still a bit of gloss- except for the boots- the glossy effect on the boots and belt is actually painted on to give them that patent leather shine. I'm really proud of the face on this guy, too.

Looks like a nice effective TT job Cregan :good: The flesh is good too, his right hand caught my eye before the face :) Is this a technique/product you see yourself sticking with for this kind of batch painting? Has it saved much time?

Are these to be sold on or do you have an army of your own?

Cheers, B.

PS. Thanks for the link Exiles :good: I like the spearman in the top close-up photo centre, although the guy to his left is cool too :)

I'm still a little iffy on that decision at this point. The AP has saved me a lot of time and does seem to give a very nice effect, but until I completely finish these guys, base them, and spray them with matte varnish I won't really be able to judge the quality. If they turn out as well as it seems, then I may stick with AP for quick army work since it does save a lot of time.

They're going to be sold. I'll be selling this shock troop squad with heavy weapons and the HQ squad I picked up- which will be the second part of this WIP. I'm hopin got have them all done and up on ebay in a decent amount of time- that way I can immediately reinvest the money in some more minis to paint and sell ;)

I'm finally painting again after a couple of insane weeks. Between a big business trip and getting ready for the baby I hadn't had much time to work on these guys until recently.

I added gear to all the guards to finish them off. They're completed except for basing and varnishing. Here are pics of the Sergeant, Vox, a heavy weapons guy (missile launcher) and special weapon (grenade launcher).

Now I'm working on building the bases. I'm going for an urban rubble look on all of them and I'm starting with the heavy weapons bases first. This is just a sneak peak of what the autocannon and missile launcher bases will look like.

The Cadian Shock Troops and Heavy Weapons teams are now completed! I'm very happy with them and I think these pictures are some of the most accurate I've ever taken. The light source I used overpowered the highlights a little, though.
ig10.jpg

For the bases I went with an urban rubble kind of look. I used Stern's tutorial to help me get the rocks and grass looking good. the rusted pipes are drinking straws and the wires are a combination of coax and sound wires.

For the Rocket Launcher team I created the fence out of balsa wood. The sandbag placement came when I was trying to position the guy holding the launcher- I added a lot of definition to the ground, so it was hard to get him situated. But, I found that the sandbags gave him perfect footing to be crouched on the small hill in the center- it's what my mom would call a "happy accident."

The cinder block wall for the autocannon group was first built as a skeleton using plasticard, which I skinned with a thin layer of epoxy sculpt. After a little sculpting i had the blocks outlined and I used a rock from my driveway to add the texture.

The rest of the Cadian troops are pretty standard, but I think they turned out very well. This project has made me see how valuable of a tool Army Painter can be, so I'll be using it in most of my table top quality projects for the future, especially the ones I'm doing for sale.

Next up for this group is the HQ command squad. They've been assembled and primed, so I'll have some first stage WIP pics of them up soon.

I dare say I have not been one for the army painter in the past but I love your work so much on these it makes me want to do it. Great job and I hope you fetch a good price on them.

I think the reason why they look so different when compared to traditional AP stuff is that the AP is only visible in the shadows. I painted over the AP to create all of the highlights. Also, matte varnishis required to kill the shiney.

Well, I finally got around to the HQ Squad for my Imperial Guards. They've been base coated and Quick Shade has been applied.

WOW!!! These models really pop, great work matey. I actually like the gloss effect on the armour and the boots - keep it, just matt the fabrics. The basing looks good and the banner and other little bits you done. This will look fantastic on the gameboard!!

Hi Cregan, I'm interested in the difference between using the Army Painter product & GW Devlan Mud Wash? and polyurethane woodstain while we're at it?

I see the shine from the QuickShade, is it a tougher finish that will help to protect minis used for gaming? I'm unsure because you seem to be painting over it in places.

Just for consistency over this project or do you see it becoming a permanent addition to your toolkit?

I've lost track now, are the IG yours, a commission or an Ebay project? Looking good regardless :good:

Cheers, B.
