The Good Whiskey Drinking Guide

Whiskey/whisky are all, without exception, foul

I shall stick with skraal and his oj!

Sorry to say, but I'm in the same boat. Really not a fan of either form on it's own. I do agree that a good whisky/ey shouldn't need a carbonated mixer! That said I do quite like some wine's that have been blended with whisky.

I'm a big ale fan (which does make living in a town with a brewery a bonus!) but tend to go towards southern comfort as my spirit of choice.

But there's nothing quite like a good single malt. After you've had the good stuff, it's pretty hard to go back to drinking blends, no matter how good the blend is. I'm with Dragonsreach on this - nothing with the whisky but a dollop of water.

Ice is OK for the pansies :).

Gentlemen. Get it right;-

Whiskey = Bushmills, Clontarf or Slieve Foy (Irish)
Whisky = Bladnoch (Lowland Scottish and incredibly smooth)

.

Holy shit now I'm embarassed - a spelling mistake. Ahh well, at least I was drunk, that would be the reason. Yes. I knew that of course...

Im a BIG Ale fan also and a BIG Whiskey fan...... I also like OJ.... my god i'm easy to please :)

When it comes to drinking beers I now select local ales as opposed to lagers like Stella (my favourite) and I certainly avoid lagers like Carling and Fosters etc all the common crap. If you are drinking beer, good local beer is what its all about if you can get it. And it is also good to try different things of course, sticking to a single beer all the time can be a little boring. I am more of a pub man than a club man so if you are a clubber I dont think the selection of ales is probably going to be as good as a pub. But what do I know, its been an age since I went to one and the last club I was in I got kicked out because the bouncer thought I was about to throw up everywhere, I was merely sleepy and groggy.....

I quite like a soda and lime in the summer here (bloody hot and humid). Back home, I can't get enough of irn bru. Gorgeous stuff, so it is.

I do like a good single malt. A lovely smooth one, no harshness that when cooled with a little ice slips down nicely......i also like a nice blended whiskey and coke or lemonade. Never put a mixer in single malt though....sacrilege!

Also, dont ever......ever drink tesco value whiskey........it be bad......worse than jack daniels.......

Can't beat a good bit of whisky (NOT whiskey - that'll be anything other than Scotch...) snobbery from folk who wouldn't know a malt from a grain.

Quality blended Scotch is wondrous stuff and my daily tipple. Grant's Family Reserve is truly excellent and cheap as chips. Teacher's is also very drinkable. Main reason many otherwise decent blends are ruined is through the amount of caramel slapped in them to add that 'aged' colour. Tobermory's fare is of varied (and not particularly good) quality unless it's their really old 30 year plus gear. I'll take Grant's every time :)

As for ice, I'll let you stew in your own embarrassment. As heinous as adding Coke IMO...

And whilst we're at it, ditch the shitty cut glass tumbler and buy a proper nosing glass if you want to look as though you know what you're talking about :D

Bladnoch (Lowland Scottish and incredibly smooth)

My parents live just around the corner from the Bladnoch distillery. If you get chance, go on the distillery tour - make sure you're not driving - and get some sampling in at the end. The owner bottles small batches of other top-notch whiskies that you can buy in the shop. Last time I was there I got a bottle of 1963 Invergordon grain (amongst other things). Amazing stuff. Like the mellowist, silkiest bourbon you've ever tasted.

Scott; Fran & I did the tour a few years ago.
Wigton's a quite little place isn't it ? Except for tourist trollops like us.

And I'm not much of a beer drinker these days, having become a complete lightweight for alchohol. However managed two pints in the hotel on Friday before I wanted to go to sleep, but when I do have beer its normally bottled Cobra, Chimay or Leffe.
It's not so much that I'm a snob about beer, but these aren't chemical crud masquerading as "beers". I'd far rather find a decent microbrewery round here that ruin my liver & kidneys with the chemically forced yeast growth that passes for brewing in this country.

Ya cannae beat Whyte & Mackay Special for blended whisky.... very nice. Almost the same quality and taste as a good malt.
