The Pope has decided that the Harry Potter novels are EVIL, and is strongly advising Christians not to buy the new novel when it comes out in two days...

Those books are responsible for getting millions of children into reading, so I suppose the church has gone back to it\'s medieval policy against literacy?

I really hope no one is influenced by this when the new book, Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince comes out Saturday!

In all seriousness, I think religious organisations should stick to religion and stay out of literature. Yeah, it does seem kinda dark ages, but he ain\'t called the panzer pope for nothin\'.

I\'m neither an enthusiast of religion or harry potter, but this is wrong.

It always amazed me that J.R.R. Tolkien was reguarded as a great Christina along with C.S. Lewis. Yet a game based on Tolkien\'s work (with bits of other stuff thrown in) is a great evil.

J.K. Rowling is probably no role model for Christian kids, but I agee that her books have instilled a love of reading in many children.

If you can separate fantasy from reality, have at them. If you cannot separate these things, you should stay away from these stories as well as Grimm\'s Fairy Tales, Nursery Stories, and probably anything in the fiction section of the library.

And yes, I and my kids have read the Harry Potter books. We found them a well written bit of FANTASY.

Lloyd has a point, you can easily believe a book-ban from a former Nazi.

However, \"Pope Benedict\" has not said anything about Harry Potter.

Two years ago, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger - then head of the office of the inquisition - wrote a letter thanking Gabriele Kuby for writing about the supposed harm that can be caused by the popular book series.

Oh, and that article misrepresents the truth. John Paul II never praised the Harry Potter series. His press secretary made an off-hand comment about them which the press incorrectly attributed to the Pontif.

Just in case you get the wrong idea, I love the books and think this is all just publicity.

..unless there is another newstory that says this (the one you link to sure doesn\'t), you\'ll see that the Pope\'s stance on this was to say that the AUTHOR of another book (Harry Potter: Good or Evil) did a \'good\' thing by explaining the facts of Harry Potter.

At worst the Pope called Harry Potter \'a subtle seduction\'.

Later in the article they quote some sort of \'Christian\' Theologian (note they didn\'t say Catholic), who says that the Vatican \'condemns\' anyone who tries to infringe on the copyright of good and evil....

The Pope did not say (at least in this article, if he did elsewhere I am unaware of it) that Harry Potter is EVIL...

The newstory itself doesn\'t even make sense, but is a perfect example of how the press can twist a story, add a quote from some other source and make it look like what they want it to.

I think someone has to send him a copy of Warhammer book Hordes of chaos so he can see that Harry Potter is not that evil...
Or maybe a copy of GTA: St Andreas

Well as long as the Pope is still okay with me skipping mass on Sundays, using birth control, and occaisionally having a few drinks, I guess I can live without Harry Potter.

@Vike and Vince (V&V?) - I actually found dozens of articles about it when I did a search... I chose that one because it was the shortest, most to-the-point, and didn\'t give you a ton of pop-ups.

Most of the other articles were more anti-pope, with that one at least leaning toward the truth by mentioning the actual book the pontiff was making reference to.

I am always fair and impartial (cough, cough yeah, right). I clearly stated at the end of my post that this was a thinly disguised harry potter thread. :p

Big fan of the work, can\'t wait \'till Saturday morning.

What I don\'t understand is how ANYONE could see some sort of secret agenda in this stuff, it\'s mostly light hearted. Rawling doesn\'t even try to address the plausibility of a secret society of monsters living right under our noses or try to keep to a consistant set of rules for \'magik\'. It\'s just a fun fairy tale, nothing more.

I am a Christian

I could care less what the Pope says; as I am NOT Catholic.

Disagreeing with the Pope and church is why we are called PROTESTants

I love books and hate book banning.

Books are dangerous, words often beget revolution

Books are good, words often beget revolution

Parents have a responsibility to interpret literature with their children.

The Iliad and other classics have themes distasteful to my ethical code, however my children and I enjoy them, tempered with discussion.

So, he might have called HP a \"subtle seduction\". Yeah, right, friggin\' NAZI pig! Please. While we\'re at it, why not just kick all Germans out of church if they were Hitler Youth (and back then, pretty much everyone was)? I\'m just getting slightly pissed off that every friggin\' statement he makes has to pass the \"Nazificator\". So he worked for the \"Inquisition 2K\". Guess what: JP II was his boss! It\'s not always black and white like that.
Btw: I\'ve just recently become a German (born Bosnian), I am not Christian, I don\'t care much about what the Ratz says, and I enjoyed reading Harry Potter... But this stuff just cranks me up...

On a side note: The pope might have expressed an opinion about HP, but didn\'t someplace in California (LA? Or maybe even all of California) pass a law that kids can only buy HP with their parent\'s permit, cause it \"describes pagan rituals\" ???
EDIT: Beat me to it Phil! I love reading Fantasy, or even historical fiction... just goes to show that PC and morality are beautys that are quite negotiable. I recommend \"The Adventures Of Röde Orm\" (or something like that, don\'t know the English title) by Frans G. Bengtsson. Viking fun, all the time! A great read!

I am not familiar with that book; it may not yet have English translation. I do love the Norse sagas though. I real dig the Edda and the Thorstein sagas.

BTW I work with alot of Germans and I understand how the Nazi jibes can get you going even though you\'re a naturalized German.

I\'ll kiss the Pope\'s ring before I kiss his ring. :moon: I ain\'t Catholic! And someone recently made an effort to introduce me to the joys of Harry Potter, I do believe I\'ll commit a cardinal sin and read some more Harry Potter.
