The Return of The King

hurrah!

Got to see it last night!

I did miss the scenes indicated above, but I am confident most will be in the extended versions (which is the saving grace of the whole deal).

Some of the scenes were definately \"action hero\" stuff, but still very fun and very cool.

I really liked the scene when Eowyn fought the \"witch king\".... Excellent!

Also, not being a big fan of actually \"going to the movies\" (rude people, noisy chattering..etc. etc.) I was impressed by how well this audience behaved for 3 hours plus....That must be a testament to how good it is. It kept everyone pretty well focused! :Dlol

I watched it Friday evening and the only thing that spoilt it was the three girls sat behind us as every time that Olando Bloom came on screen they more or less wet themselves.
It\'s quite amazing the effect some actors can have on their audience. For instance, Leonardo DiCaprio makes me vomit every time I see him:D

why can people accept that elves are immortal, but not that they can climb elephants?

Or that people can run for many days without rest.
Tolkien wrote a mythology because he felt England didn\'t have one.

Now, as for Arwen rescuing Frodo. It is stupid to introduce a character for one scene, then have them dissapear.

As for Faramir. Before, he had no character development and served one purpose (to put Smeagol against Frodo again) in the book. In the movie he serves that purpose, as well as re-stressing the danger of the ring. Plus, he actually shows character development and sets the scene for following his father\'s obviously stupid commands. Also, it adds a counter-point to the battle of Helmsdeep, so that both the Ring Bearer and the rest are in great danger at seemingly the same time. (although Helmsdeep occured many days before the Faramir scene.

Personally, I have no problem with the additions, as they do add something to the movie, if you take the time to look beyond the \"Oh, they added something that wasn\'t there before, it must be crap\" attitude.

I have no problem with Legolas climbing Mumakils. He can walk on top of snow that everyone else sinks in and doesn\'t feel cold.

Many of the parts that people want to see that are missing will be in the extended version. The scouring of the shire will not be though. It wasn\'t even filmed. I think it was newsweek who did a big article on what will be on the dvd.

Arwen rescues Frodo??? I\'m thinking you are talking about when Galadriel appeared to him and gave him some encouragement and helped him to his feet.

If elves are immortal can\'t they also make telepathic contact with hobbits???lollollol

My wife saw it last night (I\'m still in finals) and she liked it even though it was \"gross\" - but then the book is gross too so she thought it matched pretty well.

As to scouring the Shire, well that scene is very important in the book but not important in a movie. PJ has attempted to take an icon of popular culture and address it to a modern world element.
Tolkein tried to create a mythology that the ordinary humdrum citizen of Britain (during an unhealthy, dirty industrial era) could achieve greatness, but in the end the things that are personally important are home and family. Grand evil abroad is just an aspect of little evil at home. Tolkein\'s book was affected by Europe being torn apart by war. PJs simply doesn\'t have that and goes for a world-wide audience.

Well I got to see it for a second time yesterday (my wife wanted to see it and I just HAD to go with her:D). Seeing it a scond time you see more detail and have had time to think through PJ\'s decisions. It is simply a great film. I guess I can live without the scouring of the shire. I loved that bit in the book but I can see where it wouldn\'t be great movie making. They put just enough of the Shire in to bring the story to a close and get everybody home. My wife had never read the books (sacrilege) and toward the end she whispered that she wanted Sam to get married, so she was happy in the end. She didn\'t quite get why Frodo had to leave, but after I gave her a little backstory she understood.

The only trouble I had at this viewing was a couple a few seats down that seemed to think they were sitting in their living room and were talking in full voice about what was going on. I let that go for about 3 minutes, thinking they would get a clue and settle in. They didn\'t until I leaned over and said, \"hey guys I came to listen to the movie not your insipid comments\". Inflamatory, yes, effective, yes, that was the last I heard of them for the duration, other than a few more considerate whispers to each other, which I don\'t mind. They were older than me I think, how do you manage to get well into your fourties and not know that talking in a theatre bothers other folks???

Don\'t wait for this one on video! It\'s epic scenes and battles are awesome on the big screen.

arwen rescuing frodo appears in the first movie. It\'s an example somebody gave as a stupid change. Because it\'s really important to the plot that we meet Glorfindle, who never appears again.

and for those that were bothered, Arwen doesn\'t use magic to summon the river, she just asks it for help.

Ahhhh! I forgot that bit of pumping up Arwen\'s role in the trilogy. They certainly seemed to need to find things for her to do didn\'t they. Well I guess when you have an actress that looks that good with pointy ears, you are going to find a way to fit her in;)

My wife did say there was some strange, not fleshed-out bit about Arwen\'s life being tied inversely to the power of Sauron. Guess I have to see that for myself.

I don\'t mind Arwen for Glorfindel. After all, Tolkein\'s book has virtually no strong female characters. Eowyn is closest but she\'s more like a child who reads comics and wants to be Superman.
Still, if you haven\'t, you MUST read the book. Personally Glorfindel is one of my favorite characters in the book and he really shows the power of the oldest of the elves. I think he\'s what Tolkein called a \"Dark Elf\" - i.e. that he came to Middle Earth before the sun rose. He is also described as one of the few \"who could stand alone against the nine (ringwraiths).\" - note: he probably wouldn\'t win, but he wouldn\'t run and wet himself like most everyone else.

Of course I\'m a total nerd. My absolute favorite elf was always Cirdan - and not just because he\'s got a beard.

Yeah that Arwen tied to Saurons power thing threw me for a little loop....

But, I cannot agree with you more. The movies are great, but they don\'t compare to the incredible intricacies of the books.

READ THE BOOKS! It is amazing how much richer, broad, expansive, and detailed the world of Middle Earth is.

I always like Glorfindel as well. But the character I really missed out on was Quickbeam, the ent who \'watched after\' Merry and Pippen while the Entmoot was taking place.

Of course, the list of my favorite characters from those books reads just like an index of characters!!
