Congrats on the Competition. The second photo is a lot better, though the skin looks a little too yellow, but sure if that is the photo or not. Love the beast, can't wait to see what you do with it.

'ello? 'ello? Anybody there?

*MiJ tiptoes into the vast empty space that used to be his WIP thread...*

Right. Apologies for the complete absence of everything for the past couple of weeks. What can I say? Work has been all consuming, and I've basically just been to knacked to do much other than just lurk around the forums of an evening.

But no more! I'm back on the wagon, paint brush in hand, ready to slap some slap on some metal. So, without further ado, here's wot I did today:

Now, being an astute lot with an eye for fine detail, you will no doubt have noticed that this is not, in fact, the hound of scathach. It is a chap by the name of Painless Joe, from Heresy miniatures. I gave it some thought, and I realised that if I'm honest with myself I'm just not in the mood for the hound right now. I'll get back to it, to be sure, but at the mo I'm not really feeling up to such a big project, so I thought I'd do something a bit smaller and simpler. My plan for this mini is a bit of an experiment. I was watching the Miniature Mentor tutorial by Jen Haley about doing the Ranger in monochrome, and I reckon I fancy having a shotty at it myself. So, I picked out Joe from my unpainted minis box (a deep, dark, terrible place, lemme tell you) and my plan is to paint him entirely using only the colour turquoise (P3 coal black, to be precise). VMC Black for shadows, and an as-yet-undecided pale grey for highlights. I may change this to hawk turquoise for highlights, but I'm not sure. I also intend to try out NMM/SENMM on him, particularly on the gun, ammo belt, ammo box, and (crucially) his sunglasses :)

So, for today, I did base coat and shading on his coat.

What do y'all think? I know the pics aint up to much, but is the concept alright, do you reckon?

OK, not a lot to go in that last post. Unfortunately, today's pic likely suffers from the same problems. It's the monochrome - I cant seem to take a decent picture :(

anyway - today's work: troosers, chest and big muscly arms. It all needs a fair bit of smoothing out, but I'm going for a concept test here, first of all.

A question: At the moment I'm keeping the contrast between the different areas (skin/coat/trousers etc) quite high. However, I kinda want to shade the skin and trousers a lot more. Do you think this would make everything look too samey?

Well, these last photos are overexposed, if you have an EV setting on your camera, knock it down a bit. If you can control the F stop, increase it a little. Or when you get the pic in photoshop, adjusting the histogram will help with exposure problems.

With keeping the mini monochrome, you'll have to depend on your highlight and shadows to help. The skin for example, instead of just lightening your base color for highlights, add a little yellow to it. When you highlight the pants or the jacket, add a little blue or red. Using complimentary or even tertiary colors will help too - time to drag out the color wheel. ;)

Looking good! OH! I never did get a chance to congratulate you on the contest. Very well done, my friend! Very well done!

Howdy again. Thanks for the suggestions, Kathryn. I have all sorts of bells and whistles on my camera (its a Canon EOS Kiss with macro lens), and I have photoshop on my PC. There really is no reason I can't get perfectly exposed photos other than my own incompetence :D I hope these pics are better.

So, a smallish update today. I did a bit more work on Joe - shaded the skin a bit more, did his face and boots, and blacked in a lot of other bits and bobs. The glasses and shin armour are white with the intent of SENMMing them later. I have no idea if I can pull this technique off, but heck, if I dont try I'll never learn, no? I'm quite enjoying painting this guy, not worrying too much about blending and whatnot, and just seeing how it all turns out. Also, the monochrome palette means I can be painting his skin and just go "meh, I feel like doing boots now" and just start painting boots - no paint mixing required :D

Anyway, pics...

The photos turned out very nice MiJ! I like the highlights and shadows you're getting, especially on the face. What are you going to do with the glasses? I just had a funny thought - with him being monochrome, making them technicolor would be a hoot. ;) j/k! Looking great so far!

im also curious about the glasses, can be a hard nut to crack :) dig the colourchoices, although there are some technical issues, like the groin where i think you should increase shading the deeper you go... eh lol... overall i think you could add more shading. still good start, and damn groovy miniature!

Lovely work. Very Matrix. Love the colours. The glasses will look good either in a similar scheme or a dark reflective red or orange colour.

Thanks, all :) Actually, the glasses (as well as his shin guards, belt, ammo pack (maybe), pack straps, gun, etc etc) are going to be SENMM. I also hope to keep exclusively to black, white and coal black (turquoise). Unfortunately that means no coloured shadows, and probably not any coloured glasses, either, altho I agree that it would be pretty snazzy. That's the plan, anyway. I've never done SENMM before, and I might get fed up with it half way through, but for now I feel like giving it a shotty. I agree with Skelletet, too (do I ever not?). I was thinking to do a bit more shading on him, particularly his arms and a bit more on his face (not too much though). As for the groin, yeah, he could do with darkening down a bit around the voonerables. I don't have much time this weekend, but as and when I get stuff done, I'll stick it up here :) as always, thanks for everyone's comments :)

Hey, you! MiJ's thread! Stop lazing about and get up! *MiJ nudges his WIP thread* Whaddya mean you're too stiff from disuse?

Gah. Threads these days. you leave em alone for a few months, and when you come back they've gone all rusty.

*polishpolishpolish, cleancleanclean*

Right. Here we go. A brief update...

It's been ages, I know. There are two main reasons why I haven't been posting much these past few months.

One is this:

skyrim.jpg

Skyrim. Without a doubt the computer game that has taken more of my life away than any other, and speaking as a hardened final fantasy fan, that's saying something. Now I've finished it (well, as finished as a game like skyrim ever gets) I still think it's the acest game ever, for more reasons than I can mention, but principally the dragons. They're proper big scaly fire breathing bastichs that terrorise the countryside, set fire to villages and eat yer horse. Noice :)

The second thing is this:
IMG_0081.jpg

My son, Sean. In the pic he's about 2 or 3 days old, but as he was born in February he is now the ripe old age of 6 weeks or so, and has well and truly taken over the house.

So, those are the reasons for my lack of updates. The former is now done with. The latter...may be some time.

However, I have not been completely sitting on my hands. I've done one fairly major piece and a few bits and bobs that aint so major. First up, an ork mekboy junka. My mate asked me to build him one of these, as there isnt a model yet (it's in a forge world book.) So, he gave me a box o bits, and I set to work. I made this:
side2.jpg

then painted it up to look like this:

wagonfrontsidesmallrez.jpg

wagonsidesmallrezcomment.jpg

I really like the little grot rigger minis I was given to work with. Loads of personality :)

wagonspotgrotsmallrez.jpg

wagonwrenchgrotsmallrez.jpg

The only other thing I've done of late is some eldar banshees. I have 10 I'm kinda working on, so here's an example. The sword and base arent finished yet.

front-1.jpg

back-1.jpg

So, that's what I've been up to. I probably won't be posting much in the near future due to Sean making his presence felt, but as and when painting is done, I'll post as I go :)

Love the junka. Doing stuff like that is the main reason for collecting irks.

The banshee seems a little flat somehow, and is that a moldline on the right arm?

The orks look great! I concur with Mar on the Banshee's right arm, but most importantly,

CONGRATULATIONS DADDY!

I like the realistic look on that little ogre pup. It looks like he's really enjoying that goblin he's munching on. And nice touch with the delicate rose embroidery, it really adds to the story telling of that photo.

took me ages, that embroidery did :p

oh, and yes, that is a mould line on the banshee's arm.:shame: Let that be a lesson to me: don't assume that just cos a mini is stuck together it's been properly cleaned up. I usually clean minis properly prior to sticking them together, but this musta been one of my casualties of "aghgottagametomorrowgottastickbansheestogetherNOW!". Ah well - tis only a gaming piece for my own army. Lesson learned, I suppose.

MiJ is a daddy!!!! Whooo hoo! Congrats my friend!!! Don't worry, you'll figure out a way to hold the game controller and the baby at the same time. ;)

I have to laugh about the video games, Sky Rim, ME3, etc. I haven't played a single one but have them memorized since my son plays them over and over...

Anyway, the kit bash looks fantastic! Great painting. I know you're time is very limited but keep up the great work MiJ!!! You're missed around here!
