The worst paint I have ever worked with...

Any specific paint horror stories from the rest of you?

I would have to say GW Golden Yellow would have to be up in the top 10 worst paints ever. The pigment is so weak and the coverage is very uneven.

Waaaay back (like in the early \'80s), Armory had a line of paints. I tried these, and they were, without a doubt, the worst paint I\'d used up to that point. Thinking back, I still think they were the worst paint I\'ve ever used.

But, as for more current stuff, I really hate GW yellows. I can never get a good coat with them. Probably why I switched to Reaper, and then to Vallejo. ;)

GW Golden Yellow (no saturation)

GW Red Gore (ditto)

GW Imperial Purple, Liche Purple, Ultramarines Blue, Regal Blue, Midnight Blue, Enchanted blue - these are gorgeous colours that I love, with excellent coverage, but they bleed a red pigment through lighter colours laid on top, so need sealing mid-paintjob. I hate doing that.

Vallejo Game Colour Dark Green (too thin for general painting, dries darker than it goes on)

Vallejo Flat Aluminium (lovely to use for pastels, but the pigment size is huge, and it goes on quite grainy compared with other Vallejo paints which are lovely and creamy).

Oh, and Vallejo Gold (lousy coverage) and Silver (great for mixing, but completely breaks down on thinning and is very grainy).

Speaking of no saturation...GW Kommando Khaki seems to be even worse than Golden Yellow. I really don\'t mind fairly transparent paint, probably because I learned using the old GW paints.

I also have yet to encounter the bleed through issue Rachel mentioned with the GW blues which I use frequently...speaking of GW blues, anyone noticed that Midnight Blue over Black primer has the exact color and luster of Bic pen ink?? :bouncy:

I recently bought some of those old armory paints cheap. Some nice colors and I don\'t find them to be that bad. Maybe they just need to \"age\" on a shelf for 20 years before they are usable? lol

I\'ve owned one bottle of Armoury paint: Gunmetal. It was awful. I tried to use it once and threw it away. I had a Ral Partha green (Elf Green?) that was simply Godawful, too. No coverage at all.

Maybe. It wouldn\'t surprise me, since the biggest problem I had with them was coverage. Maybe if I\'d left a bottle open for a day or so to properly \"age\" they might have worked.

But, who the hell has time for that? I just wrote them a letter (it was a beautiful coincidence that at the time they also sent out a \"request for painting tips\" for a magazine or something--which never got published in any way--at the time I tried them) telling them they had the worst paint I\'d ever used and went back to using *ceramic* paints (yes, thick Delta Ceramacoat was better than Armory).

Lately I have got tired with the genral bad coverage of GW paints (I think they have got worse in that respect since the change to new pots), so I have just ordered a Vallejo set

GW\'s own Golden Yellow and Red Gore. Atrocious. Both. And guess what? They\'re my army\'s main colours... oooooh, my luck... ;p

I know I always say I\'m a Vallejo fan. But the earlier Citadel Colours were really good. I mean the formula they use to sell back in 89\'-92. I always think of that time as the Rogue trader Era.lol Then they started putting out complete crap. Wait I take that back. I liked the Glazes and Washes that came out in 93\' or 94\'.

Back to the conversation; The stuff with the bolter shell tops dried out too quick. And the inks spilled.Even when the bottle was closed.???

I\'d agree, particularly with respect to nearly any Vallejo red. I\'ve tried several and not only do they cover poorly, they appear to be unusually fragile, almost as if the acrylic isn\'t polymerizing like it should. Might be a chemical interaction between the acrylic resin and the pigment itself; I can\'t think of anything else it could be...

I haven\'t had that problem. What are you using for a surfacer?

I have a bottle of the old GW pre-hex-flip-cap blue ink. It has a shiny reddish-purple sheen to it when dry (looks great wet) Id throw it away, but I have had it for so long, its kinda sentimental now. I never use it though.

Vallejo metallics have too big metal flakes to be usable.

All my old Polly-S paints have been tossed for having too much unwanted \"texture\". I never could get a smooth coat with them.

Try undercoating it with a grey, then... that might work.

All GW-reds and yellows are bad IMHO. Dont know about the red-Vallejo\'s yet, but the yellow I currently use ( 913, Yellow Ochre) is beautiful...

I\'ve been undercoating with either Krylon or Ace premium primer. All other colors I\'ve used so far cover extremely well, whether I\'ve used grey or white as the primer coat. Moreover, the small bits of uncovered metal also are covered well by every other paint I\'ve used. It\'s just something funny about the reds, and particularly the Vallejo reds, and within that category especially the Game Color reds, but the others are suspect, too. Reaper\'s reds aren\'t immune to this effect; blood red covers poorly. I suppose it could be an interaction between the primer and the red pigments; I can\'t imagine the carrier in these red paints is different than the carrier in any of the other hues I use. Oh well, I\'ve learned to do 20 coats and move on.
