The worst paint I have ever worked with...

Second the motion that GW white and Imperial purple are bad behaving colours. The white is chalky and the purple leaches if you use water effects or snow over the top.

Don\'t like Reaper

I\'m not very pleased with Reaper paints. The metalics are grainy, as the metal flakes aren\'t ground very fine. Regular paints have the consistancy of snot. The inks stink to high heaven.

They are inexpensive, though, and have a bead in them to aid in mixing. They aren\'t bad paints for beginners.

I\'ve been using the Vallejo Model Color Red and Hull Red and I like them very much. I haven\'t had any problems with these paints not covering.

I tried the Game Color blood red (or something like that) and it worked pretty well, too. I was trying to paint blood vessels on a dragon\'s wing, and had no problems making very fine lines that covered well on top of green.

I actually like the color of the GW Golden Yellow; I just layer it on really thick. I usually only use it as a last layer when I do something with graduated colors (such as fire); since I only need it on the tip of a flame or something, thick layering is not a problem.

As for bad paint, I agree with the horrible coverage of GW reds and yellows (I think yellows are worse. I have to use 1,000 layers to get a uniform color.

Ral Partha paints are pretty grainy, especially the yellows, although I do like their greens.

I\'ve been a little disappointed with the grain size of my vallejo metals as well. What have people been using instead?

I agree that GW golden yellow is a nice colour, I use it a lot for my thousand sons, but it\'s poor coverage is beyond doubt

Just testors, reeaaally not meant for minis.

GW white too, it always comes out so grainy, I really need to buy some white ink to add to it like Tammy suggested.

Vallejo Game Color silvers are too grainy as has been said. Though the other metallics seem ok to me. You can\'t go wrong with GW metallics though (unless you\'re a tight wad).

Coat d\'arms have a few paints that aren\'t too far off being coloured water. Great for that seamless layering, but useless on their own.

Years ago I used some Humbrol acrylics and they were bad. The paint was soooo grainy. I also used artists acrylic for a short while when I was poor (not that I\'m rich now though!). that stuff just isn\'t designed for minis. You have to thin it a hell of a lot to get the right consistency, but then it\'s too thin to be of any real use (see above comment on Coat d\'arms!). It also wore off the model before the paint job was finished!

Those \"beads\" are actually skulls. Yup, there\'s a whole bunch of different ones that they stick in there, so you could \"collect\" them if you wanted. ;)

I\'ve found that Reapers can behave very nicely (better than GW in my opinion) if you use the marvelous Future/Water mixture to thin them. Straight out of the bottle, they are a bit gloopy.

My biggest problem with the inks in that range is that they are very, very shiny. But, I do use both the Black Ink and Flesh Wash ink straight out of the bottle with my liner brush to do black/brown lining. I tried using them as a glaze/wash, and was not pleased with the result...

testors....

Mini painting has come a long way since the days of the Testors enamel.

Crappy paint, plus you had to have thinner to clean it and work with it.

Of course, it may have been the terrible brushes that were sold with the paints, but I remember that paint being very unuser friendly....

You might want to check the Model Masters Acryl paints. The metals of this line are fantastic - very fine metal particles give this stuff a wonderfully smooth look when applied. Forget the old \"drybrush on black\" mode - this stuff looks great applied directly to white primer.

The normal acryl colors seem to be OK, if a bit shiney. I only have a few bottles, and the stuff isn\'t all that different from GW paint.

They have some nicer brushes now, too. I\'ve seen a white bristled synthetic brush that\'s pretty good for the money. But being synthetic, you get the old \"bendy brush\" syndrome quickly. Still a big improvement over those white-handled nylon abominations - which they still sell, by the way.

I must admit that GW reds and yellows have some covering problems, so i Never use them over dark colours, but i think they\'re good enough if you undercoat them with a light brown for yellows (bestial brown is perfect) and scab red for reds...
Gw metallics are quite good, but i think they\'re better if you undercoat them in black

my worst was a GW mitril silver wich seemed to be water and little iron pieces... it couldn\'t cover anything, but i bought another can and it worked properly ???
i\'m not satisfied with GW skull white, too, but i add a little amount of water every now and then so it doesn\'t get too grainy

Cheers =)

Here my Andrea colour white is quite strange...
It\'s a kind of paste, and I can\'t get it out of the pot without having to press it like mad... And then of course I have a nice quantity of white that\'ll dry so quickly I have to cover it with water immediately.
Then it won\'t mix with the water, and stay grainy if I don\'t try to mix it for 5 mins. That has a very bad effect on brushes by the way...

Must have been bad luck with the pot... For the other ones are quite good in fact.

Ah, and my other vote goes to GW golden yellow, a terrible paint... And at least with it I can be sure that it isn\'t so because it stayed open in the store for days before I happened to pick it up lol.

I\'ll try that, Valander. I signed up for Reaper\'s Black Lighning program, so I really should include some of their paints in a demo. And the Future mix is pretty cheap, so it would be a good way to teach new painters (and maybe a few old ones) about thining paints and using a wet pallet. Thanks for the tip.

Worst paints

The paint I hate the most is Ral Partha\'s purple. It has poor coverage, you need like ten coats, and it dries with a glossy finish. I also hate most Coat d\' Arms paints. They also dry with a glossy finish. Makes it hard to tell if you\'ve highlighted enough with all the light reflecting back at you.
