@ SkelleteS and ten ball: Thanks guys! It's always motivating to get compliments from master painters :D

@BAM: The yellow stuff is Milliput Standard yellow-gray that I stamped with blister foam to make it look like superfine sand. The front and sides are indeed plasticard. After I built the base up the way I wanted, I cut and conformed the plasticard to the shape of the base and attached with superglue... I think there's some finger skin in there ;]

@ Maenas: Thanks buddy! I will have some more updates in the next day or two :)

That always adds to the authenticity of handmade items! This latest base is just awesome, Lost. You're absolutely right to be looking for ways to turn 'mistakes' into opportunities. I'm very excited to watch this one develop.

Thanks everybody! Happy Thanksgiving by the way :) I should be done with the build this Friday...only have a few more gaps to fill with milliput and some more plant material to add. I think I'll start painting once that's done.

@SaintToad: Thanks :D I'm in a competition to build bases as nice as yours! :)

@Bailey03: Thanks David :) December is the potluck at LAMS and it's coming up fast! Hope to see you there!

A couple days late, but the base is ready for priming and painting! Comments and critiques welcome before I start painting :)

I can't believe it, but even now, I still like this base lol...

Anyone have suggestions on how to paint black fur? The wolf is going to be black. THANKS!!

You're doing great!

This multi-level creation (and the clever and sturdy housing you've created to hide your construction) is really impressive. For advice, I'd just say to ensure you've got a plausible route of entry behind the wolf, lest he seem trapped. If that's ok, I think you're ready to prime this beauty. Awesome job!

Now that you mention it, I'll put some paw prints in the snow behind the wolf when I get to that point :) Thanks for the tip :) I think it will actually look a lot better like that!

Hey what do you guys think for a name for the wolf vignette? I was thinking "Alpha" or painting some paw prints on the front. Any suggestions? Thanks!

That's an incredible base. I think it's one of those situations where you need to pain the base alongside the wolf to ensure you get the right tone. An all-black wolf might be too stark against the snow and feel unreal. Then again you might need a darker wolf to offset the dark bottom and light top of the base. A tricky one, but it's going to look amazing.

Not it sure about names, but given it's 100 years since Jack London's death how about 'White Fang'?

Since we're now thinking about 'mood' (title, color scheme, etc), Lost, do you have in your mind yet whether this is a lone wolf prowling around looking for weak and vulnerable prey or a confident pack leader whose quarry is perhaps trapped in the lower area beneath the ledge? The tilt and elevation of the head and shoulders could go either way, but I think it might help you determine a title, and perhaps some other design elements, to try to imagine not only how (good idea with the footprints in the snow) but why your central figure is where he is, and why you've represented exactly this scene in his life. Of course, you chose this wolf because (like everyone, I think) you thought he was cool-looking, but I often find it helpful to pursue a narrative in my mind as I work. One nice thing is that it allows me to 'work' when I'm not at my modelling desk. The mere fact that I think you should try to address this type of consideration is a testament to the excellence the start you've made on this new vignette, which I believe deserves your absolute best effort.

@Maenas and bgcdazzler: Thanks for the suggestions :) both would go with the theme I am going for.

@ SaintToad: Thanks again SaintToad. Your compliments are quite motivating. :)

The scene I'm going for is basically a lone wolf braving a harsh and bleak winter's day. I plan on using a lot of dark browns for the rocks and some brownish grey for the trees. The lower area of the base is actually going to be a lake. I may try to model some ice towards the shore line. Originally I bought the model for a different project, but it was too big. Instead of letting it sit in my model box, I decided I would make a small vignette for one of my co-workers who likes wolves.

Here's a couple pictures of the type of atmosphere/mood I'm going for:
