Badass. I love the frozen lake idea. Along those lines, I think that water (and weather) effects are an area of our hobby that could stand some much more deliberate exploration. I can't wait to see what you pull off!

Both bases are looking very sharp. I hope you've got some time this weekend to get in there with some paints!
I like the little nameplate you've got on the older one. Are those rivets I see (hard to tell for sure while it's unpainted).

I also came across the name I'm gonna use for my wolf; "A Winter's Tale"

I know the piece doesn't really convey a definitive story, but I thought the name was ambiguous enough to where the viewer can create their own story, be reminded of some memory, or have a personal connection to the piece. What do you think?

Don't be coy, you know it's a great name... Just kidding, but I do think it's a good choice, for the reasons you give.
Since your title creates an ambiguous mood, you might think about how you can suggest things 'offscreen' which the viewer can imagine (sort of like the trail of footprints you decided upon, which hints at a past beyond what's figured immediately in the snapshot of the scene).

I'm NOT dead!! Been gone a long time...started grad school in January, so I've been super busy. Somehow though, I've found some time to spend on thee ol' hobby! I bought a bunch more models of course... one of them was patches from Reaper... hilariously cute model! I decided to restart my WIP with him... took a more simple approach to the base with a lot of detail.. here's what I got so far... I hope I didn't lose any past gains! lol!

No fantasy tree is complete without fungus and a bird's nest... and no bird's nest is complete without eggs!!

Looking great, Lost. Nice to see you again. Mushrooms on the back of the tree will look great. I like the bird's nest, too!

Question for all you modeling geniuses out there... aside from going to a trophy shop or using your printer (which I still don't understand) is there a place I can get some nice name plates for my display pieces? Some of you guys have some really intricate display tags, and I think it would help if I put some nice tags on some of my pieces. Thanks!

Have a look at this tuto from our super master painter Sprocket: https://sproketsmallworld.blogspot.com.es/2016/09/making-titlename-plaque-for-display.html

So I'm trying to catch up on some projects before the next semester of school starts, and I've made some progress on my wolf... I could use some pointers on how to color the trees.. I'm going for a very bleak winter scene and the wolf is going to be black..still have to add the snow, icicles, etc Thanks!

Got some painting done this weekend... not too fond of it, but then again, I don't think it's too bad considering I haven't really finished anything in almost 2 years... hopefully everything will pop when I add the snow.. questions/comments/constructive criticism would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Looks good so to me. From what I remember of New York bleak winter days is that most of the color in the world was very muted, and I think what you have now will look right when you add the snow. Having good placement of the snow will help the black color of the wolf stand out more and the rest of the background will end up getting that muted winter feel compared to the brightness of the snow. At least thats how I envision it.

Looking great, Lost.
Don't forget some little touches of life, little patches of green moss or hardy grass, dormant plants, etc. Anything that shows that the 'normal' earth is still there, just hidden, will add a lot of narrative depth to the piece.

@ Guawol: That's what I'm hoping for! :) From the few times I've been in snow storms, I remember everything getting really muted and peacefully quiet.. Love the snow!

@ SaintToad: that's the plan :) Was going to put in some dead grass around the trees and in the rock areas. But first, I gotta try the water effects :tremble!:

Thanks for the comments!
