@Alexi_Z:

I have been there many a time, pin vice bit snaps, then sticks under thumb nail!! Ouch ! Lost count of the number of times thats happened to me!

The worst story I know is from when I was on Teaching Practice (teacher training), and one of the teachers from the department (Design & Technology, \'Shop\' for the Americans) was doing a demonstration on how to use a Band-saw safely. One of the Kids (year 7\'s, 10-11) asked a question while the saw was running and Alex turned to answer, and removed the tip of her Right index finger.

Try and stay calm with 20-odd 10-11 year olds, and your finger GUSHING blood!!! They are excitable enough as it is!!!! I heard the commotion, but I was taking another class so I only saw the aftermath.

The upshot is that they couldn\'t re-attach the \'finger-end\' because they couldn\'t find it. Even after taking the band-saw apart and checking the extraction system. Not untill the next day when one of the technicians found the errant finger tip, stuck to the ceilling where it had been flung!!!! About 1cm of flesh & bone drying onto the suspended ceilling :|~

Alex still has trouble typing!

The moral of the story is, when using potentially \'maiming\' equipment. Ignore everything else! Ive seen too many carpenters with missing fingers from circular saws etc etc.......

But then I have many scars from sharp things (blades and saws), hot things (soldering Irons, brazing torches, MIG welders), and heavy things! I dont seem to listen to my own advice! :duh::duh::duh:

I feel very fortunate. I\'ve never done more than poke myself a few times with the pin vise bit.

Slightly off topic, I enjoy a show called Mythbusters, on which two Hollywood special fx guys try to test out various \"urban myths\". Last week they were testing whether it\'s possible to decapitate someone with a ceiling fan. They determined that it\'s impossible. They couldn\'t decapitate their dummy (made of ballistics gel and a real spinal column from a pig), not even when they suspended a lawn mower engine from the ceiling and attached extra-long steel blades to it.

:wow:

Not to do with miniatures but:

How many have asked a fat woman when her baby is due only to hear \"I\'m not pregnant?\"

Who would believe that? You can stop one of those fans with your hand (it never even occurred to me that trying that would be dangerous, either). I never would think for an instant that you could be decapitated by one.

lol So wrong. Funny, but wrong.

edit:
prae, you MUST elaborate.

I need to find a good medic forum. Last time I elaborated on an nth degree of gross I\'ve run into the mods warned me that there were the pathetically squeemish out there. I don\'t need anyone cryin\' home to their mamas.
But, it is enough to say that \"pieces\", evidence and badguys can lurk above you- and I\'ve ran into all three. Sometimes all at the same time lol

My dad is a retired Cop/Traffic Cop, and when they had a particularly gruesome crash/suicide they would call in what was effectionatly known as the \'bin bag & spatular\' patrol (for my North American cousins, Trash sack & Fish-slice) to clean up!:|~

The worst was always train related, the guy could be spread over 100m and they still had to call in a Police Surgeon to pronounce the guy dead!!!

The only bad wound I experienced was sticking a \'lino/block cutter\' right into my thumb, they are very sharp and it went in up to the bone!!:( The best thing is, it was so sharp that it didnt hurt, it just bled ALOT!

Oh and my ex-girlfriend shot a staple into my thumb \'pad\' (same thumb).

Why is he called Fang?

My mate from school did a \'There\'s something about Mary\' moment in the changing rooms after footy. I\'ve never heard a scream like it!!!! His nik-name was Pob, but after that it was Acorn ;)???

I watch too much telly. :D

A couple of weeks ago I saw a program detailing a nuclear accident that occurred in Nevada in the 1960s. A small reactor melted down and 3 technicians were killed. When the first response crew went in, they could only find 2 guys, who\'d both died of radiation. Finally when the cleanup crew went in much later, they found the 3rd guy. One of the control rods from the reactor had impaled him on the ceiling. Nobody had thought to look up.

My brother does sheetmetal work. He was installing some ductwork using a power drill and what us Yanks call \'zip screws\'. Little screws that go through thin metal without needing to drill a pilot hole. He pushed down, started the drill, and when the screw went through the metal his hand was on the other side. Screwed it way in. Of course it shocked him so he did what comes normally, he yanked his hand free, ripping free of the screw.
