This Infernal Heat!!

heh . .kamui - all is well . . I walked from work on 5th ave and 18th street all the way to Jackson Heights Queens via the 59th Street bridge - a coke, a pepsi, 2 botteld waters and 2 and a half hours later I made it home.

And power wasn\'t on this morning so I drove out to Long Island to a friends house who has AC and a pool. Good times . . . good times!

But yeah there was no hope of painting the last couple days without light and AC. Glad it\'s back!!

For my international friends: How did that black-out story play??

oh - and, good grief, the next day after my original post there was reports of France losing 3000 to the heat!!

I think the North East US got off easy for 2 days of no AC or electricity. I\'ve yet to hear of any related deaths . . .

My heart goes out to France - that seems like an unnacceptable number to lose to weather like heat . . . 3000??!! That\'s more than were lost on 9/11!! (not to diminish that)

Hey, I\'m back home from my trip to the coast ( B.C), and let me tell ya, it is dang unpleasant in the B.C interior. I don\'t know if any of you have heard of the fires around here, but thousands of people have been evacuted. The town I live is in lucky (no actual fires) but at the same time smoke is fillin\' up the valley. It\'s 40 degrees celsius here, and when you carack a window, smoke comes right in. @#$%&@ heat
especially after the coast! It was right around 25-30 degrees celsius with a nice ocean breeze.

And that trip to B.C. sounds real dangerous alright. Hope you have central air or something for the smoke.

I can only imagine your original response and yes, it was probably a good move to change it!

As for you guys in the US of A sounds like you\'ve been having fun. We haven\'t had big power-cuts since the 70\'s (strike action mainly) and it resulted in a baby-boom. Funny how you guys could only think of painting models!! :bouncy:

It\'s 08/16/03 and it\'s finally cooling down, sad news, 3200 french people have already died of heat related causes (so did my dog - I\'ll never forget the poor thing - 40°C is too much for a 18 year old mutt), Forest fires rage through Spain, France and other parts of Europe (most of them lit by vandals).

Hmmm.. that is sad news

I know how you feel Tuubje. I lost my old staffie a few months ago due to a brain tumour. (The sock-dinosaur is her replacement). Non-doggy people don\'t understand how devastating the loss of your best friend can be. (please re-word that sentence ifyou are a cat/mouse person etc..I know it feels the same).

You must have done very well by her/him however if they lived to be 18!!!

Don\'t go without for too long...there are plenty of wet-noses out there that need a home:bouncy:

As Finn says, anyone who has pets knows how that feels. One of my kit-kats is 14 and she was finding the heat hard, luckily its cooled down a bit here now.....

It\'s been in the 90s (35-38C) here for months. But it\'s like that every summer. We\'ve had water restrictions here for a couple of years now. And the fires last summer were horrible. So for those folks that are not used to this here are some tips. Fill the tub with the coldest water you can stand and sit in it. Above a certain temperature the body can\'t control the internal temperature and it becomes just like having a fever. Cooling your skin does wonders to help with thermal regulation. This is often why people die of heat related problems. And it\'s more prevelant with old folks. Or just a cold cloth in the arm pits, head or groin. Also wear a hat when outside. Anything to give your head a little shade. Loose clothing also helps. The bath idea works for pets too. But then so does shaving off the fur. I\'ve got a friend who regularly shaves his long haired cats for the summer. They may not like the process but they sure appreciate the results.

Watched the news today and saw that The part of Spain I\'ve been to (Valencia) is now drowning. They are having several large storms and even a typhoon I heard. I left at the right time it seems. But VLRM lives there, I wonder how he\'s doing.
On the other hand It\'s nice to see that our american friends have some electricity again

To be honest my dog seems insignificant next to France. Don\'t get me wrong, I\'m sad, but she was 18 years old and had a good life.

It just seems a bit wrong that I put the grief for my dog in front of the grief I should have for the other 3200 people that died.

Here in Iowa, USA it is in the 90\'s with high humidity. This has been a good summer overall. Normally we get a few 100 degree days. We haven\'t had any rain in my area for about three weeks and all our grass is dead. At least I don\'t have to mow. Was sorry to hear about the European deaths from heat as well as the East Coast and Canadian blackouts. I just assumed they fixed the grid after 1977. I guess not. I have been off line for a bit since the blaster worm hit my computer, luckily I got it removed and patched. You\'d think Bill Gates would try to email people in advance. MSN is the games workshop of the computer world. :flame:

You are absolutely right to put your own grief first!
You can\'t concern yourself with all the tragedies and injustices that go on in the world. That is the path to insanity. At the end of the day you can only aim to do what is right by you and yours. And if everybody managed to do that, there might not be so many tragedies and injustices.
I do know how you feel though because my dog died a couple of weeks after my father and I felt more grief for my dog. The reasons for this though, were that I was responsible for my dog, who had provided me with 8 years of friendship and loyalty. Whilst I wasn\'t responsible for my father who had done his damndest to drink and smoke himself to death for 50 years.
You are not responsible for French fatalities and you are entitled to your grief.

I think this is where that old saying applies:

1 death in the family = 10 deaths in the next state = 100 deaths across the country = 10000 deaths across the world (or something to this effect)

The closer someone is to us, the more we are affected by their deaths. That\'s just the way it is, and no one should feel guilty about it. I can see that someone who isn\'t a pet owner may see the death of a family pet as something less than the death of some strangers, but emotionally...well, we can\'t help how we feel. My condolences Tuubje. My dog was 18 also when he died, so I know how you feel. May you be able to open your heart to another furry buddy when the grief has abated.

Don\'t think it wrong that you feel worse for your dog then for the people in france. The people in france were mainly old infirm too. Besides, you were friends with the dog, not the french. The dog was probably a more caring, intelligent, and sensitivive being too.

Silver and black - don\'t be too mad about the worm. The patch has been out since March. That is why most civil services went uninterrupted. They paid heed to the warning.

Thank you all again

And as for another furry buddy in the house, it\'ll have to wait. I\'m opening my own store and since this gulps up a lot of money, I live with my parents still. They have had it with 4-legged friends dying and do not want a dog toddling through the house again. So I\'ll just have to wait a while before I make enough money to move out and get me one. It\'ll probably cost more than 14 euros
