Ok I\'m not trying to wee wee in anybody\'s wheaties for this topic and I don\'t want 50 people jumping on the let\'s hate Grey Mouser wagon today but.... How about some reform on this site????

Things seem a little stale to me.

The same people are at the top.
The same people are at the bottom.

Some of those people are not posting anymore.

I think the voting standards have changed so much that nobody could every over take the leaders who are perpetually and rightfully locked into a place of Honor.

How about a hall of fame for the images that are \"all that?\"

How about deleteing the multitudes of items that are ranked as 3 or below after 90 days?

It seems the more the site grows the less people actually get votes. A year ago I would have had tons of votes for the same image that has just now broken 23.

30 zillion and counting doesn\'t mean too much if nobody could ever get through them all.

I don\'t want to play god and I have no right to say how things should be. but it would seem something will have to give eventually?

It will probably come as no surprise to you....

..that this very topic has been done before, many times. I think I started off at least one thread along these lines...

And I am not trying to piss in your cornflakes either:D If we were only allowed one thread on a topic this forum would have died ages ago....

For what it\'s worth, I am in favour of a cull. To be honest I stopped voting ages ago as it seemed to be a fools errand. Now I watch folk I know...occasionally something so marvellous, or horrid, looms into view that I am forced to voice an opinion..... and I will look when regular forum goers request it, but otherwise I just find the process depressing. Not because of the good ones, but the vast amounts of dross that clogs up the bandwidth.

Traditionally, Dauber will now jump in, call us both artistic fascists, and set the tone for the rest of the debate..

Cue...Dauber...:bouncy:

Um.. why delete everything 3 and below? If so, why do we even have the possibility to vote 3? This can be repeated into infinity.....

And concerning the people on top... well... I know I won\'t be able to get there. I don\'t post here to get a high ranking, I do it because it\'s fun to talk to you all and because you can help me with my painting ambitions ;)

And I still vote on whatever mini may come up.

I know it\'s a topic that\'s been done to death. .. \"Sigh\" .. but maybe if it keeps coming up somebody will answer it with some change. I am frustrated with the site.

It never seems fresh anymore. I do not want to post new things... and I also do not want to vote. The only thing left is to do is read the forums, which Finn and some of the others do make very amusing at times and get inspiration for new mini\'s.

I shop the store quite a bit to help support the site and my lead habit, and thankfully both seem to be growing. I pay my membership fee to keep this place alive, but lately I feel like I\'m keeping the zombie pics alive. Hey and why do I have to vote on the same pics over and over again to make my vote stick?

Umm because a 3 and below is really aweful and the site is called cool mini or not. I say the or not should get the boot. I\'m all for fun but a 3 is pretty bad. I say leave it up for 90 days if it gets voted to a 4 in that time great, If not Bye bye. But thats just my opinion ...

and I always say I don\'t pay for your lead, I\'m not going to be painting it any time soon so please feel free to ignore me lollollollol.

How about removing dead accounts with no activity for a year? surely that would be helpful.

Well, I am sure Chern hears you :) I think as far as people on the top, that changes, maybe not the top few, as they are just that much better than anyone else, but the top 100 changes all the time. The standards are different and the trends are different. That\'s why we find it amusing to have the top pic six months ago so that you can see what was hot back then compared to now.

We never expected everyone to vote on everything. you should only vote or comment on stuff that excits you or ones that are so bad that you couldn\'t help but to leave him/her a comment and hopefully they will get better in the future.

As far as culling, it is already done for you when you browse the gallery with your own preferences. Not as automatic as you want, but the features are there.

There are tons of features that we can add and there are unlimited improvements that we can make. The site is growing, keep the comments coming so that we can make it better for everyone.

P.S. If this site grows anymore, I would need more mods, as it is, it takes me 1 hour a day on authorizing pics and comments, and if I skip weekends, which I normally do, Mondays are even crazier. But to me it is all worth it, good or bad, people are painting and taking the time to upload their work. The hobby is growing and CMON has become a great community with unlimited potential. You never know, the Bobby Wongs and Jen Haleys all started with their 3 minis, just that at some point they figured out how to paint better and get to where they are today, so be patient with the ones that are not so spectacular, they will improve, you\'d be surprised one day.

There is no easy solution to this...

It\'s great that the site keeps growing and, as Borg says, everyone starts low so we need to make allowances.

I do think there needs to be a bit of commitment evident from the poster however. As it is, a person can register, stick up a load of crap and then disappear into the horizon leaving us to wade through their \'another (bloody) minis\'.
It\'s fine when a talented person does this. Good minis are always an inspiration to someone who may be attempting something similar.
I have a lot of sympathy however, for the idea of removing minis who don\'t make above a certain score, after a certain period or number of votes, if the submitter has not logged on for a period of time.

@ Borg, I agree with your enthusiasm for the hobby good or bad.

I disagree with your assessment that I could be a Haley or a Bobby Wong on this site if only I could paint better. Bobby only has 2 images on this site, and Haley has only been posting 1 or 2 images after almost a year long break. I think she has had an illness or something??

For the simple fact that the voting changes that now effect people were not in place when some of those people got to where they are. I.E. The magic 50 votes and no real change in numbers after that.

I\'m not saying this isn\'t a great site.. it is.

I just think it could benefit from some improvements.

As for the built in browser ones... They work for just browsing but if I want to vote on just Rackham for example I gotta pull and vote each one.. and lately images I voted on haven\'t been sticking I suspect it has something to do with the point spread? But it could just be gremlins.

The only thing I agree with is to ditch people that for instance haven\'t actually logged in forsay 6 months or so. There are a multitude of accounts on CMON that haven\'thad new minis uploaded for even longer than that. It might be an idea to get rid of the lurkers.....

@ Tami .... Oh now come on... lollollol surely you agree with the fact that this is a great site ...LMAO....

The browser thing could work a little better too, ....and the voting seems a little off ... okay that last part is just me..

I\'m teasing you.. By the way the painting thing was really really cool, That was a fresh idea. But I said that already....

Changed the figure you made comments on BTW. Don\'t think it helped but looked better to me.

I think that\'s fair. But then again.... maybe... na, it\'s fair ;)

I don\'t think we should get rid of lurkers. I lurked for about a year around here before posting anything, and it took me even longer than that to post any pics of my minis. I originally came here to read the articles and learn. I absorbed. If you look at my account, I went from a mini that is really a 1 (how it\'s a 2.1 right now I don\'t know) and now have a BROKEN mini that\'s rating around 6.7, and it\'s a scan even.

As for culling the lower ranked minis or inactive accounts, maybe do something I\'ve seen other sites do and send out periodic emails stating \"use it or lose it.\" For the lower ranked minis I think it\'s good to see how well someone has progressed, like zaphod.

I think ultimately the browse or personal settings could be better, but I think a global change on the site is unlikely. everyone is going to want to include something or exclude something, so give it time, and when Chern can get around to it, he will make the personal settings more... personal... I guess so that everyone can eventually have what they want.

I like the use it or lose it e-mail idea.

Actually there have been a number of people breaking into the top 100 recently. Also there has been movement in the top 10 with Goatman being knocked off the top for a while (he\'s back again now).

Things do change, one thing I\'ve noticed is that no 1 is approx 9.7, no 50 is approx 9 whilst no 150 is at 8.5, that means the top artists are really close to each other and a 0.1 change in your overall score can really make a difference.

Definitely not.....

Is that what you really mean...? Because as long as they are logging in and looking reading etc I think that is great. No one should be forced to post pics or contribute to the forums if they don\'t want too. Besides, many/most of the regulars started off as lurkers.

The group I would target are the ones who upload everything in a fit of enthusiasm, then two weeks later discover skateboarding or girls or something and then just leave us with multiple shots of their badly painted Ultramarine army to wade through and clog up the site. I wouldn\'t call these lurkers, flytippers maybe:D

ok, bad choice of term. What i meant was the people that do not log in after a while, but still have acounts open. i mean, people that are active on the site, either by posting minis, posting on the forums or both, are cool, but there are a LOT of accounts where the last mini was posted over a year ago, and i\'m sure a load of these people don\'t even visit anymore. Ithink, to save bandwidth, and give the active posters a chance to climb up the ladder, these accounts should be deleted. That\'s what i meant....

Yep, I also think Tammy has a good point to it. Perhaps it would be worth doublechecking with those people by writing them e-mails. Then again, I don\'t think anyone would really care to do that ...

There is, however, another thing that bothers me. I believe this has been discussed on this forum for zillion times, but anyway... It seems somewhat ridiculous to me that breath-taking works (like, Golden Demon winning miniatures, for example) get 7-s and 8-s. How in the world does that happen..?

OKAY I\'M GOING TO TRY THIS AGAIN!!!

:D Now that I have your attention.
I\'ve been saying something similar to Tammy everytime this topic comes up. Give each person a 30 time limit to log on. If they don\'t, then their account is deleted along with their pics. You don\'t have to give them a warning. Clean out all of the old accounts then make a notice for all of the new people who sign up. Maybe make it where if you subscribe for a year, you don\'t have to worry about the sign in. you\'re covered for as long as your subscription last. If this idea is used, I want free miniatures. lol :innocent:

hmm...

Not entirely sure how I feel about this, but I certainly don\'t want any sort of urine in any of my breakfast cereal....;)

I see many of your points, and maybe there is nothing wrong with cutting some dead weight. I know I like to leave comments for pics, but what is the point of that if the user is not even around to read them.

Just as a point of contention though, I have been inspired by many different miniatures on this site. Some are not voted above a 5 or 6. Inspiration does not only come from incredible miniatures, but rather great ideas, clever applications, or just fun stuff.
