You are right Borg. If there is unlimited server space, then why not....My concern arises from the countless times I have had access problems/delays and either rightly or wrongly blamed that on the site being \'clogged up\'.

The \'bottomless pit\' model you describe however, has implications for the way this site is used.

When I first joined, I tried hard to vote on as many minis as I could, leaving comments where appropriate. Given the vast amount of images on the site now, however, I no longer randomly browse at all. I search for particular minis/artists and follow links from the forums. That\'s it.

I like your idea of a giant reference work of painted miniatures, good and bad, it just seems a conceptual step away from what I believe the site first tried to achieve?

I suppose that\'s just the evolving nature of the site...

I used to be able to keep up with all the submissions, but I\'ve fallen behind and have lost touch. The main reason that this makes me unhappy is I used to be pretty on top of entries from people who I\'ve met either in the forums or in meat-space (real life...) . I would much rather have some sort of friends/watch list that would favor viewing a set of figures from a specific list of users. I don\'t think that would end up making things seem elitist -- you might have 90 people on your friends list, but if they only post once a month then that\'s only 3 friends figs a day, which isn\'t a big cut in my normal voting habits.

I think that\'s much superior to removing old figures, which I severely disagree with.

That is a great idea! Instead of (or in addition to) the \'favorites\' list a \'watch list\' would be very well received (at least by me!)

I can identify with that...

However, it would be most horribly elitest IMO and cause a huge potential bias between CMON regulars/forumers and everyone else...but hey ho:bouncy:

I understand the archive deal and all. But let\'s be realistic. Why would you you need ten pics of the the same mini done by various people who haven\'t posted in three years and don\'t care? The person has given up, or is busy with other things. The world will not end if this is deleted. When the word association thing was started everyone was complaining about it wasting bandwidth, taking up too much space. But people want to keep pics that you\'ll probably never see. It would be lke trying to find a specific piece of straw in a stack of hay. It makes no sense.?????????

I find myself agreeing with Finn. I usually don\'t browse aimlessly through minis anymore as I used to.
If I need inspiration I search for specific miniature titles(and the another minis will never pop up, even if they could be some of some help to me) and from there I often go to the best painted miniatures\' galleries. So a favourite painters\' list would be a great gimmick.

Now, that is a rarity:D

@Borg I just realised today that there is a huge misunderstanding here. You asked whether your images should be removed because you hadn\'t posted any for a year.....

That wasn\'t my point at all. I would not suggest that folk should be active posters of images or on the forums, just that they bother to log in occasionally....

By an \'idle\' member I mean someone who has not logged on to CMON for over a year and therefore is wasting the valuable time of folk who may be taking the trouble to comment on his/her miniatures.

An \'active\' member would be anyone who bothers to log in now and again....

That\'s my life in a nutshell... :(

As for everything else... I\'m finding myself agreeing more and more with finn. I\'ve been trying to wade through and vote on every single mini. I\'ve left a comment here or there, but the sheer volume to just get through the voting is enough to make me give up. I\'ve only voted on 1245, and that\'s after many sessions of sitting at my computer and voting on minis for an hour here and a couple of hours there...

What really gets me is I actually went through the entire gallery when I first discovered this site and voted on everything... but I wasn\'t logged on so it says I didn\'t vote!! :eek:

Of course, when I vote I do take my time to look over the mini, check on any comments the painter might have given (why don\'t more people post what they\'ve done or technique, much less bother with brand and name?) and any comments others might have made. I do this to try and not make a knee-jerk vote of \"it\'s another average painted naked female named Another Mini - 5\" or some such nonsense. I do want to be impartial. :D

I do still paint, but I have so much on my table these days. And if you guys think that you get sniped, wait till I upload a submission :rolleyes: But it is true about time. I don\'t have those let\'s sit down for a whole weekend and paint kind of time. It is a little here and a little there, and just when I get back into the groove, I have to stop and do something else. Then when I have a little more time, well, guess what, more kool minis have been released, so I work on those instead, and this cycle repeats. So I never get anything finished.

But I am getting the next CMON contest commission done soon, and although I can\'t tell you what it is yet, it is the best one so far, well, Steve\'s Amazon was pretty kick ass, so it will be close. Well, my point of telling you this is because I am actually excited to paint this one (I should have painted the Amazon, just got too much on my plate at the time) and it is sculpted by a new sculptor, not new to the business, but new to us and we are going to try a new casting facility that can give us a better finish. So, overall, this new mini will be better. The poing of this is not to tease you guys, but I just realised how long it has been since I finished a mini, so I am going to make an effort soon and get something new on my gallery..

We start off with a bare mini and everyone who is interested spends 15 minutes working on it said:
or this one:

Then someone converts it a bit etc. It would most likely end up looking like some hideous mutant thingy and nothing like how it started off.

Just like in \'Chinese Whispers\'

Just how did you turn this \'vagueness\' into The Idea you mention above???

Full credit however for the practical application of The Idea

@SaxonAngel

I can\'t announce it yet, it might get the sculptor in trouble, and you might never see the sculpt then. I shouldn\'t even have mention anything, my fault really.

And I will try to get something painted, but Chern, I am not too sure, he is kind of busy (when he is not jumping out of planes) :). The convention pics you mentioned were there to seed the site at the beginning, I didn\'t have the time to go through them after that, but I had a recent server change and they all showed broken, so i thought it might be a good time for them to go away :)

@finn

Chinese Whispers is a kids game, you children, stop fighting, :p and besides, you are supposed to lose the entire meaning by the end of the game, not retain the exact idea...

Sparring, not fighting...

I don\'t have the energy for anything else..:bouncy:

The winking smiley was supposed to give the game away, and the last sentence was supposed to be a congratulation for turning the notion into a reality...

Apologies however, if it came across as anything else:flip:
