Shoot the casting people they clearly think they are auditioning people for star trek, that's definately not Thorin Oakenshield - even I know that and I've never even seen an illustration of him.... 
May their souls burn in the hottest furnaces in the deepest planes of Hell for their blasphemy upon this great classic.

I always pictured Thorin as being a lot more...greybearded? Kinda, grizzled n stuff. Not...well, klingony is the only word that fits, I'm afraid. Sorry casting people: you fail

So it's not like he has a lot of lines or facial fat to pad out, but yes definitley Klingon-ish.

I've just looked at others in the cast....Barry Humphries, Sylvester McCoy.... WTF is Dame Edna Everage and the worst ever Dr Who doing in that lot?

Sad. Not even a good beard. And black? I pictured them in browns, blues, grays, or greens. And in travelling cloaks, at least until they got Smaug out of the way.

I miss Gimli.....best rendition of a dwarf...ever....If you recall the scene in the "Fellowship of the Ring" when the dwarves are given the rings of power and they are standing around an alter....and when they are at the council in Rivendale...that is how a dwarf should be....dwarves are born with beards, even the women have them....beards...BEARDS, not some pubescent excuse for facial hair....

You guys have ruined Oakenshield for me. (I won't be able to not see a klingon in this movie ever again)
Honestly...I've never been able to finish reading any of Tolkiens works (I lose interest in the constant 'minute' details), but Thorin here is the only one who really stands out as a 'small human' while perusing through production stills. Everybody else (whether they resemble their literary namesake or not) seem to be in the same vein as John Rhys-Davies from the previous trilogy.
(lastly, could someone please explain why he's holding an Elfish blade. . . .)

In the Hobbit he and Gandalf both got Elven blades from the Trolls that turned to stone. Orcrist and Glamdring, I think I spelled those correctly. Thorin, IIRC, carried Orcrist.
Sad that I know that, and what the names meant...
. . . goblin-cleaver and foe-hammer. The orcs called them "Biter" and "Beater."

the goblins, even. i thought orcrist was going to be bigger and meaner looking tho, that thing looks just like sting. which by the way was found together with the two others in the troll den. i´ve embraces my inner nerd, and if i´m gonna nerd anything, it´s gonna be lotr tbh=)
