Having been to Florida many times, and having lived in San Diego and going to mission beach all the time there are some major differences.

The Gulf of Mexico is warm, almost like bath water, while the Pacific is cold, teeth chattering, testicle shrinking cold.

The beaches I went to in Florida (mainly the Destin/San Destin area) have sugar white sand, with very little debris on the beaches.
The beaches in California (Mission beach and a few others I can\'t remember the names of)
had very dirty looking sand with all kinds of trash on the shore and in the water.

Now the beaches in Hawaii are a mix between the two, beautiful beaches, but cold, cold water.

My recomendation as a world traveler if you want pretty beaches, Florida or Hawaii. But Florida is much cheaper for the low budget traveller.
If you want a so, so beach but warm water and a cool location (plus pretty cheap) go to Acapulco.
