You may think the photo is crap, but it highlights how realistic the wolf pelt looks. And the eyes on the armOR are sweet.

Top notch work... Maybe too much use of washes, making the armor a bit messy, unless you wish to have this realy dirty armour look. The eyes are fantastic and give an excellent contrast with the armor green! The wolf skin looks really real!

Thanks Kbear and Zab. Thought I'd messed up the eyes at first as I wanted them to have a gem like quality and I placed the dark shade at the bottom instead of the top! still looks ok and I don't think it notices unless somebody points it out........which I just have........rats!

Boubi my idea was to have a slightly more grubby Horus. While I like and appreciate the work that goes into the ultra clean versions I've seen. I prefer my Horus to look like he's seen a little front line action. Having said that I have been experimenting with washes on this miniature and you're right, I have gone a little to far!

Here's where I am so far. I kind of feel that I've gone as far as I can with him to be honest. I'm worried that anything else I do will end up just getting too fussy. Any ideas guys?

The only thing i would suggest is to highlight the thumb blade of the right hand. Right now it looks darker than some of the lower bades and it should be seeing the most light.

Oh geez, that turned out awful.:sarcastic: Because I'm a nice guy here's what I'll do to help you out... I'll send you all my HH characters and you can practice more, then you can send them back to me when you are done. :p

Well spotted Kbear. I'll give it another highlight tonight.

Thanks Zab. Which HH miniatures have you got? I'm not normally a big fan of S
pess Mehrens but Forgeworld have done a great job on the 30K stuff so I'll gladly take the it off your hands. I'm not sure how many will make it back to you though. It's the guy in the post office you see, he has the look of a serial parcel opener!

Tonight's work. While It's always been my intention to base Horus with Malacant, I thought I'd give the stock base a lick of paint. Just to experiment with painting marble and I'm actually pretty happy with the results. Not sure how to paint the eagles head however? I don't want to do the whole thing in marble as I want a little variation and contrast but now i'm struggling to come up with something that would be appropriate for an Imperial palace. Any ideas?

That is a nice unpolished looking marble. I believe Ischa just posted a version of that base in his wip with a dark marble look to it. Even a dark granite would contrast well with the light mable. Or use the colors in your current marble, just reverse them. I.e make the dark colors of the veins the primary base color of the marble.

I feel your pain Zab. I've just had a look at Legendarion stuff and the Primach's are great. I may even be tempted into buying some (damn you). As for the forgeword stuff, I'm holding out for Magnus and Leman Russ......and then probably all of the Daemon Primach's if and when they decide to sculpt them.

Thanks Kbear. I've given the marble a layer of Ardcoat which I've then attempt to buff up. Just so that it reflects the little a little more IRL (which is impossible to photograph but actually looks quite good) Ischa Horus is amazing but there's no way I could replicate it :( I also though about a different colour marble but thought it may look a little to busy. I finally decided on trying the sponge stippling effect that Persifal did so effectively on his dwarf dragon slayer http://www.coolminiornot.com/forums/showthread.php?56170-Persifal-s-WIP-Dwarf-Dragon-Slayer/page2 and while nowhere near as good as his, I'm pretty happy with the result so far.

Now all there is left is a little tiding up, a few more details, paint the odd skull, pauldron's and steel reinforcment and I'm done! The ony other thing I'd like to do is dirty up the base a little more. I've read about pigments but have never used them any ideas on which ones to get and how to use them?

I'm on holiday for a few weeks as of Friday so this is probably the last update for a while. I thought I'd assemble him, just to see how he looks. As usual any comments or critiques welcome

Cheers

Tim

I like it. You achieved the color contrast between the eagle head and stairs. with the level of the rest, the red of the cloak is a bit of a let down...but i have no suggestions for spicing it up.

Btw i think yours is as nice as Isha's. Just different styles. I love the textures he worked in, but prefer your eyes on the armor and increased effort on the back side.

Ok i've been out drinking all night so please forgive/ disregard anything i say in this post. Kbear wow! even too be compared to Ischa is amazing to me. The guy is a brilliant painter and somebody I really aspire to so thank you!

The cloak has far more colour variations and intrest IRL but I don't think it's taken a very good picture. Let me know how i can improve on the cloak and i'll happy give it a go.

Alcohol has made my head hurt so i'm going to bed. See you all in a fortnight x

thanks Zab. i've since added 'poop' to the eagle's head. just to add a little to the weathering. have you ever used pigments? if so any tips?

You betcha! If you plan on spraying the mini with a sealer you'll have to over do the pigments a bit because the sealer will knock the effect way back. If you aren't sealing it then use a binder to set them in place once done so they don't come off with handling. I just use rubbing alcohol as a binder but you can buy specific binder that smell a lot like rubbing alcohol :p

Oh yes. Some sealers more than others. Best not to unless it s a gaming piece. So just a binder then to keep the heavier areas of pigment in place.

Really nice work, lovin the metals but think you could go up a few tones on the highlights...BLING! Only real concern is your colour choice for shading the cloak. It appears in the images that you have made more of a colour change than a tonal change, red to magenta doesn't quite do it for me. With the armour being green it may work well to use green for darkening the red in the midtone to shadow areas a la complimentary theory. Just my 2p, great work in all, base coming along beaut :)

Bingo! I think that is what i couldn't put my finger on. Working some greens into the shadow of the red cloak may do the trick.
