Simply wonderful to behold. Fantastic work and I'm not surprised you couldn't wait to get it out here for all to see.
As BoK has suggested, don't put yourself down, you have talent and are displaying it, wear the new hat with pride.

It looks great just be mindful to not have the model overpowered by the base. As a rule of thumb the base shild be no larger than2-3 times the model. Great job Tim.

Thanks 10. Hmmmmmmm I can see what you mean but i'm split between working a little more on him and concentrating on the Avatar, Malacant and the unmade Vulkan sitting on the windowsill, so little time :)

Thanks BFK to be honest Horus seemed to paint himself. Granted I had 4 weeks off with a broken toe but intentionally injuring myself to get in some more quality painting time seems a little.....rash (I have thought about it though) I know what you mean about the Avatar not being as clean as Horus and I think it may be a little to do with the sculpt and the nature of the paint job. The cracks in the basalt plates are stupidly deep. So much so that getting paint all the way in there is incredibly hard. I did actually contemplate filling in some of the bigger ones just so I had a better base to paint on (I still might fill his mouth) I am trying to make him pop a little more with super colour saturation and that really is testing me to the limit (which is good but a little frustrating) I will make a few more passes once i'm happy with the effect and tidy everything up.

Thanks Meph. Yeah the base turned out far better than I pitured it in my head to be honest which is very gratifying :)

Thanks Gandalf, i'm uncomfortable in hats always have been. I have very large sticky out ears and I just look daft :beerwave:

Great advice BAM. The evidence seems to suggest that I have a rather unnatural attraction to big bases, I must be compensating for something! I'll be mindful of the the base size a little more in the next few projects

Ahhh Dennis well do I know this. My biggest problem with any artistic endeavor is self criticism and doubt. In fact it is only because of here and the comments that i've received that I am able to put that to rest a little and actually have the courage to say to myself that he is finished and resist the temptation to pick up the brush one last time.......DAMN YOU 10BALL! :)

Good advice here. I certainly learned this on my last project. However, the Horus sculpt it seems comes with this base. At least every copy I've seen used this. If he's just talking about the plinth, I personally think it's awesome.

Crikey, actual progress!

I got a little bit of painting time in last night so I thought I'd work on the big fella. Preparing the metal and worked a little on the shield and belt. I'm trying to go for a lacquer look for the belt so the black and red will be gloss varnished when finished. For the shield I decided to carry on the colour theme although this time I want it to look like dyed leather. Still lots to do on both sections to blend them further and tidy up the TMM but at least it's progress

Oooh, he looks brutal. Your reds are getting so rich and lovely. I know you said you have more to do on the shield, and I dunno what your plans are, but it seems like roughing up that wood a lot would suit how messed the leather is.

AWE INSPIRING, is that real wood on the shield! Stain it to age it as Si suggested, or if it's painted glaze it! WOW, i really am not sure...

Wow I'm not sure either. What I'm really not sure of, is the leather on top really another layer of material, or did you paint that effect? Either way, VERY impressed. I've never used a font that size on here. I reserved it for now.

Thanks guys really appreciate the nice feedback. Mr Kaine was starting to really get on my nerves so it's nice to come back to something that is enjoyable to paint!

Skel the sculpt is sooooooo well done. The detail is unbelievable and not in a GW overly complicated way

BFK and Dennis hahaha I can't tell if you're joking or not! Rest assured both the wood and leather are both painted resin. The wood has taken me ages so far. VMA mahogany glazes, then VMA middle stone, Scale 75 chestnut ink. lots more glazing rinse repeat. As you and Si have said it's looking far to clean at the moment so i'm going to paint in some silvering and also ding it up a bit. I got myself some GW Lahmian medium the other day and i've been experimenting on the shield. Tons of layers but it's giving it a really nice vibrancy

Thanks Zab and Meph. Bingo, looks like you spent to many hours as a kid playing DOOM as well then :)

Chilling out over the weekend but hopefuly i'l get a little painting done as well

I was being dead serious. The cracked leather is wow. Especially where it sits on top of the wood. You black lined it perfectly to make it look like it's a different layer. The leather is also weathered very very well. IMO don't touch a thing, leave it all as is. Really impressed by this.

@ Meph hahaha I know what you mean. DOOM and Wolfenstien featured quite a lot in my teens. There was something so very satisfying about chainsawing a giant pink beastie in the knackers!

Day off so a little work done on the shield and the matalics. Quite a lot of my time working on the shield today was re-painting a balls up from last night. For some reason I decided it would be a good idea to get some painting in at around 2:30am. so bleary eyed and half asleep I mistakenly used my Ard coat instead of my medium. It took me about 35 mins to work out why it wasn't working like it should but by that time i'd done quiet a lot of damage. This morning I've revisited it and attempted to add the silver weathering that happens to wood if left in the sun. I'm not completely happy with it but it looks better than it did. Time to put that aside for a bit!

I've also done quite a lot of the metal armour. I've been experimenting with automaton's excellent tutorial on how to add colour to TMM. I've then glazed with smoke and some VMA Necro black and re-highlighted with VMA silver. So far i'm pretty happy with how it's come out. still lots more to do but he's taking shape.

I've really started thinking about basing him as well. In my mind eye Malacant has just been summoned from Dis by a embattled demonologist. We wont get to see what has warranted calling up such a beast but I want to include the wizard, Malacant, part of a battle field and a summoning circle, what do you guys think?

As usual comments and crits welcome and thanks for everyone's feedback so far

Metals look awesome, he must of had a lot of time in Dis and a big wad of silvo :) Think i'll check out automatons tute, it's served u well. U know were u r going with the shield, the top right looks done to me, the lower left too pale atm.... as for diorama base, yeah, bring in the summoner, split levels, portals, surrealism, osl, there are plenty of wee bases around and u got the grits for a biggie ;)

For the base I see a stone circle area with perhaps a small wall / an odd pillar of stone. Overhung vegetation etc as this sight is ancient and seldom used.
some old runes scribed into the stonework and a crack in the earth with a glow inside show where this beast has come from ?
