Tim's WIP's

Seriously. You broke through to excellence with this one. If there was any doubt about your skills, it should be put to rest immediately. No wonder you are getting the painting bug at all hours. When you mojo hits, you have to answer it. This is your seminal mini right now. Is this the Mierce one? Or is it that crazy expensive one from can't remember the company???

The axe came out stupendous. Just the right amount of brown glazed on to denote wear and tear. My god man enter this one into a competition of some sorts.

Your tweaks to the shield wood took it from believable newly exposed plywood to realistically weathered shield lumber. This keeps getting better...now i am impatiently waiting for my Mierce minis to arrive :(

OK on a break from work so I can reply properly. Firstly I'd like to thank everyone for the overwhelmingly positive comments. It really is one of the reasons I'm listening to that 2:30am muse and painting when by all rights I should be tucked up in bed! (stupid muse! whats wrong with 3pm!?!)

@ Dennis. The tutorial is fantastic. very simple to follow and very effective. Here's the link if anybody else is interested http://www.coolminiornot.com/articles/1649-metallics. I am so very torn on the base. At the minute I'm swinging between a large complicated one and a smaller more compact one with height (like Skel's). I have no idea which will win out. Any suggestions!

@ Gandalf 'For the base I see a stone circle area with perhaps a small wall / an odd pillar of stone. Overhung vegetation etc as this sight is ancient and seldom used.
some old runes scribed into the stonework and a crack in the earth with a glow inside show where this beast has come from ?' this is now my brief. It's got my brain (such as it is) buzzing with ideas :)

@ Ten, Zab, Kretcher, Meph Thanks guys. I really am feeding off of the great comments and its pushing me to do and try more. Please except my digital high five! (see below)

@ BFK Thanks dude. I really am a slave to the painting bug at the moment. Work, bed, watching TV, out with the wife, looking after my son!, It really wont be denied! This guy is the Mierce mini. Smaller cousin of Krull (who is wonderful but hugely expensive) I'm afraid to ask as my wallet has taken a pounding recently but which other miniature?

@ Kbear. Thanks man. It was a lucky escape if i'm honest. I really did think i'd screwed it up there with the 'ard coat. Which mini's have you got coming?

I have quite a few from the second KS and the monstrous mounts KS. I stayed away from basic troops for the most part. They have great monsters and looking at Malacant i wish i would have added him...at least i have their Chimera and some of the minotaurs coming. The undead in their new KS are calling to me, but i can not justify the price to the US with all the other unpainted i have.

What fools we are :) I'm in on the new kindreds at the moment and the monstrous mounts as well. The newest I only originally pledged a tenner but those undead!!!! I'm in for about £100 now :(

If I'm honest BAM I do TMM for two reasons. I like the way it looks and the main one......I wouldn't know where to begin with NMM. Really no idea. The people here like Andy, Sproket and BFK that can achieve realistic looking NMM are probably witches.

ill also pledge the new undeadie stuff on mierce latest ks. cant resist :)

anyway, for a beastie like this i dont think you have to build a complex or big base if you dont want to. just look at Ben's version if this type of creature, http://www.coolminiornot.com/306526 , very easy base but the miniature itself got all the attention anyway so it works very well.

Thanks for the NMM shout out dude!!!!

Agree that a simple base can get it done just fine, but if you have a vision for a base then go for it. I made the mistake once of making a semi complex base but the vision wasn't there when I started, so it hurt me in the end. If you can visualize the composition, and have the technical skills to pull it off, so long as the base doesn't dwarf the mini, it can only help in the end. I've seen minis that, without the base would have scored like a 7 but the base brought it up to high 8s or a 9. It's not just about the scores either, it really helped the project.

Thanks Dig, thanks Chad. The Shield is the one that came with him. If your's hasn't got one its possible you have either Krull (huge great thing about the same size as the FW Bloodthirster) or maybe Scecchus (who's Malacant wingless cousin) or they may have forgotten to pack it when they sent him :(

Thanks BFK, Skel. I change my mind daily about the base to be honest. there's a wizard miniature is the post so I may just wait until he gets here and see if I get struck by inspiration. I do still want to include a summoning circle and I'm planning to do something similar to this image

I did actually manage to get some painting done today. Legs and hoof's pretty much done (although I'm going to go a little darker towards the bottom of the hoof). Axe handle finished, shield and wings attached, green stuffed and base coated. I still need to do the rest of the fur on the neck and onto the wings and I've added blood splatter to the blade that i'm not yet convinced about. I'll do some more to it and if it doesn't work paint it out.

crits or comments appreciated

Tim
