Looks great Tim, the blue tones give a very interesting look, i don't have any suggestions for a boat name but I'm sure you'll think of something schooner or later :D

Saints. The Bonner dio is still alive and kicking. I've started both of the remaining Orc's and I got some great feedback from Meg so I'll be going a little more work on the base. The Copper was based in Vallejo mahogany and then some random red Browns and oranges. I borrowed a really nice colour from Mally's S75 NMM gold set (I can remember the name though) for the highlights. Glazed Vallejo fire red into the shadows. The Verdigris is P3 Meredius blue for the basecoat. Mix in Ivory for the highlights and the glacé over so h Vallejo Olive green, Very quick to do.

@ Sicks hahahahaha love it

@ Dave I know I've already said It but we have a winner. I name this ship Red Orktober

thanks Bailey that means a great deal to me coming from you. I've been looking through your thread trying to work out how you did the awesome white and free hand on your samurai, I've got the daft notion of trying a blue pattern on dirty white fabric for the inside of his jacket. Any tips before I ruin it?

I really love all the colors that going on in the skin work, awesome job!

So I didn't get to go to Euro in the end so I tried to consul myself by painting and looking at photos of the event while weeping softly into a tissue.

Tell me about it, I have been doing the same for the last 2 Crystal Brush in a row because I am broke and can't afford to go, I not even certain to be able to go in 2017. I got my reserve of tissue ready through.

Still something bugging me with the red.

I think it's to dark maybe (not popping enough), try increase the contrast between shades and highs.

Lemme guess you do what I do busted your paintbrush shading and HL and glazed in a red which killed you original. From here this would be nothing new to me as I begin to highlight again. Lol here's what you could try. Red looks better when it's brought up one of two ways. Highlighting with oranges and other analogous colors.(this is what I choose when I paint red. Or 2) highlight the red by desaturation with whites to highlight with pinks. Either way if you choose one a very light glaze of carrosburg crimson (not blood letter as its to clowny) this is what I think your looking for. Try it don't try it whatever it's just another way to do things. But I think the first one is what your after bud. Of simply do what you think Timmy boy would do.after all your more than experienced at painting models buddy!,)

Bummer. I'll send you some of my tissues too. Lol :)

Some good suggestions from BAM on the red. I like the dark color as it reads like leather tinted red. Possibly add some dark green glazes to the depest shadows to add interest. Just my 2 cents.

Another method for red highlights which I've stolen off 10ball (I think) is to use flesh tones mixed to highlight and a light glaze of red to de-pink it a bit, it's basically one of the methods bam mentioned but substituting white for light flesh colours

The red has a nice depth, could be with all the colours in the face it need a contrast colour , have you thought about adding green in the shadows ?

DSome great ideas here, thank you so much guys. I tried the orange and the white and ink glazes before I posted and wasn't satisfied. I'm thinking it may be because as Dave and Kbear have pointed out, the coat lacks a complementary shadow colour. I've been glazing in Dark sea blue and it's not doing the job, I'll try the green instead. Thanks again guys. You all rock!

Here's the Red Orktober and some of her crew. I've changed the pistol wielding ape down below for the goblin with grenade. The ape was just to close to the fantastic dio that Megazord has just completed. The barrels will now all contain ammunition! silly goblin!

Thoughts and C&C more couraged, give it to me with both barrels :)

Liking the goblin underneath looks like he's going to throw the grenade at the rat, right next to all that gun powder ! needs something more to fill the space in the cargo hold as the goblin is so short, maybe some rigging or a hammock or even a spider dangling from a web

That's exactly what he's about to do Dave. The Red Orktober's blood soaked reign of terror is about to end in spectacular fashion....silly goblin

ive got some scale rope which will be coiled up down there. I'd really like to find a lantern that I can hang from the cross beam, I may try and make one

Watcha Tim red is a pest two things go onto glazed overs wip on platoon britanica excellent mix for reds including the oranges and flesh tones also shading with greens and purples is a good idea. Secondly stipple it adds texture makes the material far more authentic. Sorry you weren't at Euro it was really really fantastic :) ........sorry shouldn't rub it in ..........but it was! :)

Very often do I feel obliged to give any advice especially with high profile painters. Try the green shading. My analysis is you chose a deep red. Deep dark colors even reds can be tricky we all know this. Compliments are great. Try it out. My problem unforeseen is dark colors are hard to get contrast . It's like using a dark green for a dark get black. Although you'd see the colors and hues it would only provide just that. Now compliments work really great on lighter colors like a goblin green mixed with a dark red. But that red you got unless planning to do it over will still be dark , that was my reasoning with highlighting to get that pop. But I'm all for trying things out perception is not reality and I've been wrong countless times. See how the dark green (can't use a light green it makes no sense) fars against the deep red you've chose (which I love by the way) I wouldn't change that. Stippling for texture scratches etc def a good idea.. I do feel your probably going to go back and highlight to compare a. Color clash against the dark green which is already against a dark color choice. This dio however is fantastic and just ideas from other artists. I personally like the red where it is.

The paint looks awesome. I can't offer much advice on the red, apart from when I was doing my khorgorath I found it best to start with your brightest red and shade down. Purple and dark green would work well in the shadows.

The he base to me looks a bit too big - there's a lot of empty space to fill with gubbins. It might be easier at this early stage to cut it down by about half, and make the below decks really tight (as if only goblins can work down there). You might lose some height, but the focus will be back on your awesome Orks. I'm picturing Sproket's gut rot spume - the boat on his base was pretty small - enough to give a nautical theme but not so large that it overpowered the main hero.

Sorry - not the friendliest of advice, but you can reuse a lot of what you've already built.

Ahhhh I love this forum

@ Andy Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr Nah it's all good, there will be others and Salute isn't really that far away :) thanks for pointing me in the direction of Glazed over's WIP some great tips. Sone other fantastic inspirational WIP's there as well ;)

@ John. Mate I'll take all the advice I can get. I'll never reach a point where I'm beyond learning and critique is how I'll develop and grow. So advise away my friend :)

@ BDazzler thanks buddy. Truth be told the hold was intended for a larger figure but he's been swapped out for this goblin. While I like the new figure and narrative Thr change has had the unfortunate side affect of creating dead space. Not a problem however as I'm going to load the hold up with lots of eye candy. Treasure, weapons, Orky detritus and hopefully a lantern (if I can make it) There's also the hull to put in place which should close the space in a little more.

Gents thanks gain for the advice and feedback. I went for a combination of the green to shade and a stippled red/ flesh tone mix for some texture and highlights. Not sure if it's visible in the photo but the green has brought it to life. It reads as a deep red, almost velvet in hand now rather than a red tinted leather :)

cheers guys

Tim

Completely agree, it looks much much better now, I think the problem that you had before was that thw shadows on the red were too much black (too desaturated or without colour) which make it look like a dirty area not like shadow. Now it looks much more natural, as you say like if it were a used velvety red robe.
