Tired of half-naked ladies.

>>They\'re also mostly guys and in the case of GW people rather immature.<<

I\'m not sure how that follows. GW has lots of strong female models. SoBs, the Mordheim priestesses (featuring a decidedly \"matronly\" sister superior), a fierce Middenheimer, the Brettonian casters are hardly gratuitious T&A.
The only times breasts are thrown all over the place theres certainly context...the decadent Dark Elves (Harpies, Morathi, Witch Elves), the pleasure seeking Daemonettes and the Dark Eldar (Veks barge).
Topless ladies is more or less as close as they can get to implied decadence/ sexual perversionwithout getting their minis censored.

well, you have to admit that almost all of the models have to be a bit attractive at least, cannot be fat, and have more than normal boobs.

In case anyone was curious, I remembered the name of the sculptor whose females I mentioned above. They were well sculpted fully clothed, and naturally shaped.
There was one more character: the Princess - clothed head to toe, demure, and holding a bouquet of flowers.
I\'m actually looking out for more figures not carrying weapons.

And my question as to where the hags are really meant where on-line/who makes them since I live in the USA and as much as I would like to pop into the Orc\'s Nest in London, that would make for VERY expensive minis.

Hmm....it\'s not really very complicated...

The Gaijin said it (\"Money talks, and as long as people are buying it, it\'ll sell. We speak with our pocket books as well. \"), and it is truth.

Any company that makes anything will not be around for very long if they persist in making a product that does not sell.

Money is the engine people....it\'s all very wonderful to speak of equality and such, but I fear that it is immaterial.

If you want to see more realistic female figures the way to do so is to PROVE to miniature companies that making said figures would have a positive impact on their bottom line. That\'s all. It\'s up to people who want to see the change to figure out just what needs to be done.

For myself, I couldn\'t care less. If GW, Reaper, Foundry, IWM, Excalibur, etc... had a full line of \"realistic\" women the only ones I would buy are the one\'s I considered appealing (and that wouldn\'t be the old, fat ones...sorry) and they already make those! Don\'t take me for a sexist, that\'s the last thing I am. I believe everyone is my equal until they show me otherwise.

It sure would be nice if companies would make things just because a small audience wants them, but it\'s not economically feasible, and thus, tends to not happen. I\'d like a chair with a paint palette, lights, worksurface, brushholder, etc... all attached to it....but nobody is selling one \'cuz it just won\'t sell.

Market realities can be changed if enough people wnat it to happen though.

So, abstracity spake, \"Go out and begin thy crusade\".

I really have no problem with the female mini\'s. I think for the most part they look very attractive, and being a male, I have no problem with me liking the way an atractive female mini looks. By the same token I haven\'t run into many middleaged plumpy, out of shape male warrior minis either. They will all be geered to either what we all wish we looked like or what looks atractive to us. I just wish I could paint better so I could do justice to these half naked female mini\'s.:]

plump, middle-aged warrior boys

Shortboy, there are plenty of middle-aged male figures. Most folks don\'t get beards like that in their teens or even 20s.
Plump? Well, not in the warriors maybe, but plenty of portly wizard figs, or at least there used to be. Maybe they are all showing up ripped and in thongs too.:duh:

Comissioning Miniatures

Earlier I suggested that some of you consider hiring sculptors to sculpt exactly the mini you desire. This may not be as expensive as it sounds:

Although they are presently suspending new orders in order to get caught up, Eureka Miniatures has what is called the \"100 Club\" whereas they will professionally sculpt any mini for which they recieve 100 requests. This way, you get exactly what you want, but pay only the regular price for a mini. The catch is, you need to buy 100 of them, OR find 99 other folks who want one too. Get the details at:

Hi Im new here,
I won the 2001 Australasian Slayer Sword and I am female. Its great to see so much intelligent discussion on this subject. I live in Australia \'the land of the butch bloke\'. I have been in this hobby for around 16 years and honestly dont know any other local female who is into it. Over here it seems that female gamers and painters are in an extreme minority. The only way I can deal with how sexist the hobby is, is usually by not thinking about it. I get along well with the male hobbyists but i refuse to paint any female miniatures that i think are disrespectful.

I would\'nt say my choice of miniatures was influenced by much I was sexually attracted to them. At least I hope not given the amount of night goblins Ive been painting lately :p

I second what the lady said above. It\'s not the naked chicks that annoy me. It\'s that almost all of them are naked...& the same chick.
How about some flat chested chicks? naked or not. Sure it\'s a bit harder for some artists to say \"female\" without huge obvious boobs. But IRL it\'s usually easy. But it takes finesse that\'s admittedly real difficult in miniatures sculpting & most just opt to slap on token mega-jugs. It\'s the easy way out though, it\'s boring when repeated endlessly, & it appeals to the boring.
Do that many goobs really just like big implant-boobs that they sell better on minis? Or could a B-cup girl w/ nice long legs do it as well? ;)

What I ment by being atracted to them can be explained by looking in any magazine or commercial on TV. What type of people do you see advertising clothes, cars, boats, fragrances, beers, and the list goes on and on. It\'s those who are most appealing to us. Many companies sell their products using our infatuation and our insecurity with being atractive. \"If you use this you\'ll look like this\" technique that doesn\'t have to be said, it\'s subconsiously implied. TV and movies have always depicted warrior women as goddesses with armor on and even when we all know this was probably not the case it still was very appealing, just like the mini\'s that depict warrior women in this fashion. Warrior men have also always been depicted in the same way. Sparticus(Kirk Douglas, Ben Hur Charleston Heston etc.) all actors we found appealing for one reason or another. I really didn\'t mean to go on so, but I\'m sure if no one was bying these types of mini\'s, they wouldn\'t be producing them. And sorry about the spelling I\'m so bad at.

Why it sells...

Yes that is true and that is an aspect that has been pointed to at many times. that said, the hobby is quite sexist in its portrayal of the female form. It has always been that way, and it will take a lot of effort to change it. Why is it this way? Well there are two reasons closely linked:

The main market, at least in North America, is the 14-22 year old MALE... and anybody who thinks otherwise is delusional... why they are the ones with the money.

In a weird way those who work in the hobby used to be those same hobbyist who bought when they were the target audience, and know what sells to the chosen audience.

Now I do have hopes, though at times diminished, that as more women get involved in the PRODUCTION side of the hobby, that might change. Am I holding my breath? Nope, because we have a market that buys the stuff.

Now on to the insecurity issue... this is just an obeservation, but it seems to me that many of my male gamer counterparts are not only playing make belief but wish they were what they are playing. Granted that is the nature of the beast and the game called life is kind of boring at times. that said, many of my fellow gamers are not what I would call very fit people, and it was all to do with the massive ammounts of candy and other essencials consumed at a gaming session. So the minis are also idealized forms of themselves, as in the very muscular and strong barbarian (beefcake is just as common, but usually is it more tastefully presented). Of course there are those gamers that play gender confulsed characters but that leads to a whole different can of worms.
