While I'm waiting for Elly to come down Saturday and take pics so I can get the lovely lady submitted, I've gone ahead and started on my next.

Now I know the poll is still running, and the Twilight Knight is still winning, but hear me out.

I don't really have a plan for her, and I did for this guy, and he's in second place, and the replies all say they want him, and there's like 12 Twilight Knights already in CMON and NOT A SINGLE Anointed Knight.

So I started on the Knight while I grok what to do with the KD. Now I thought the cloak was a jumble of skin, so I got ready to paint me some human hides. Upon closer inspection though, it's really a bunch of standards/flags stitched together. 5 of them, to be exact. Each red circle is a different flag. Which brings about a new problem. How to paint 5 different banners, but keep them tied together thematically and not end up with the technicolor dream cape.

Actually being different flags, you may want the technicolor but instead of making it all matchy matchy what if you made it worn, faded, muddy and bloody?

As cass would say, I don't know the fluff either, so I could be off base. But are the flags what he represents or are they trophies taken from the enemy? If trophies and you go worn and faded, maybe one is just a bit newer than the others, then you would have to worry about him going day-glo on you.

Dunno...just a thought. :D

Hi Trys, for the flags I'd go with a full set of basecoats across the lot, in all the bright colours that the flags were originally made with (don't forget the heraldry rules to do with not putting metals next to metals, etc (metals being white & yellow)). It will of course look awful at this stage. Wash the crap out of it with browns & sepias, perhaps some grays in the shading. Highlight each colour up using the same brightener. So as opposed to highlighting Regal Blue with Ice Blue or Catachan Green with Goblin Green, just use Kommando Khaki then Bleached Bone in with each base colour. Then weather further, either with inks/washes/powders/TCR, then drop in final highlights. Should tie them all together without requiring each flag to be the same colour. I reckon ;)

Cheers, B.

Hey B.

Along with the fantastic painting advice, I'm seriously impressed you knew this. Not many do. :D No color on color, fur on fur, or metal on metal. But is there set heraldry in the backstory of this mini or does Trys get to wing it?

I've got a horrible feeling the only bits I know are from an old White Dwarf, presumably related to a Bretonnian release :D As opposed to my being a proper history buff ;)

Cheers, B.

PS Trys, just voted you a 7. 6 for the paint, plus 1 for the nice ideas & sculpty bits :good:

So I finally have something submitted. Here's the voting link.

Yay! I voted and gave you an 8. I'm not sure but I think someone might have come in an nuked you because the mini is much better than a 6.2. But to be completely honest the bird does need work and it kinda drags the piece down a bit. But hey, the bloody things are hard to sculpt. I know, I did one in a similar position several years ago and mine was much bigger - it was rough. You got it pretty close to scale so there's another bonus point.

lol! I used to be a herald in the SCA - and they do their best to base stuff in true history but they also tweak stuff as they need to. So I hear ya - it was still cool to read. ;)

Thanks guys. I know the bird doesn't quite measure up to the main mini, and Elly said as much when he was taking the pics. At that point I just wanted to get on to my next project, so it is what it is.

Yeah sometimes you just gotta move on lol But you've improved leaps and bounds... great skin tones and cool effect on the armor. Another thing could have added a little more interest would have been something more on the blade as well, instead of the whole thing being rusty. I think the rabbit on the base is a great touch~~
Looking forward to your next piece! I'll have to come on by and we can talk about some things... perhaps do the knight in NMM? Would be tough but good chance to learn more about it and it would be super badass!

I think you did exactly the right thing, Trys. It was your first time sculpting one, correct? Even if it wasn't it's still not going to be perfect - like I said, those things are hard and the bird I made, I did the same as you, stopped at a certain point and said - hey, that's as good as it gets right now.

So I wasn't trying to bash it or say you needed to go back and redo it or anything. Sorry if I came across that way.

Not to worry. I know what you meant. And I'm grateful that I have friends here who will tell me if something is off. I'd hate to be surrounded by yes-men blowing sunshine up my arse.

Very nice Trys! You are well on your way to nailing that color! My only advice is take it easy on the pink nose. Maybe it's the photo but it looks awful bright. You're not going to have much to work with to tone it down since a lot of colors you will be using are pretty neutral.

(You gonna post the reference for everyone or wait?)

But really, you hit the sweet spot and I have a feeling this is going to be a home run. Where's my popcorn? I'm gonna sit back and watch you paint yourself one hell of a demon horse.

And those sculpts really are nice - I just wish they weren't so blasted tiny. lol!
