That may be next - I was trying to use some badab black GW wash, but over large surfaces it's starting to look like sooty exhaust, instead of darkening the colors.

Sounds like what you need is a filter instead of a wash. Basically the same idea, only much much more diluted. It's designed to alter the tone of the underlying colors. Used quite frewuently in armor modeling.

I could be wrong but that's my 2 cents and I'm stickin' with it!

Yeah well I was reading up on it, and apparently ze germans were short of materials during the war, like paint, and decided to print this pattern on fabric and use it on their planes. The funny thing is it was actually somewhat effective...
