That may be next - I was trying to use some badab black GW wash, but over large surfaces it's starting to look like sooty exhaust, instead of darkening the colors.

I can help you out with that technique, next time I'm over. I wouldn't suggest badab black, but like Cassar suggests, perhaps a dark blue or dark turquoise to shade it would be most effective~
I would use this technique from the great automaton:

Sounds like you should give it a wash with thinned oil paint to deepen the colour...

The funny thing is that this sword base is only as long as a standard GW power sword, despite Mephy being 9mm taller.....

Hi Trystan, instead of the GW washes have you tried ink? It thins massively so you can control it from almost invisible glazes through to black lining. I use the Windsor & Newton Drawing ink...

...mainly because it's so easily available in the UK. They do dry with a slight shine & can lift if you work over them too hard (take particular care if brush varnishing).

The suggestion to use oils is something I've encountered before, not tried it myself though I'd like to at some point, no excuses as I have a carrier bag of oil paint sat behind me that hasn't been properly investigated since I was given it last year. I'd suggest ink first as you don't need new brushes or solvents but whatever you have to hand I suppose :)

Cheers, B.

I haven't, though at this point I'm open to anything! I'll take a walk over to the proper art store this week and see what they have available.

Twelve years of not painting and you are embarking on an entire army to paint? Ambitious, I like it! I wouldn't dare. Your paints seem fine after 12 years too. Nice work.

Yeah well, there are so many minis to paint, and so much sculpting to do, I'm not sure the Iron Lords will ever see the field fully painted LOL.

I am going to try and clean up the lozenge pattern a bit over the next few days. Maybe use a stencil to help get the pattern more regular. I found this:

Which should be of great value.

I use these inks and I absolutely LOVE them!

Sorry - just had to throw that in there. lol!

That pattern looks pretty sharp Trystan.

Don't feel bad - I'm working on a commission where someone else whacked half the horse's ears off then tried to sculpt over them with Apoxie and failed miserably. Docked those ears like a poor Doberman.

Have you ever tried mixing Apoxie Sculpt and Green Stuff? GS gives more body to the Apoxie Sculpt and the Apoxie makes GS a bit more friendly to move and stretch. But both still stick like crazy.

Vasaline or KY jelly m'dear. Yes we feel like perverts buying it, but at least we have an excuse and have something to show for it in between the parties.

ED: to coat the stuff in so it doesn't stick. Wash thoroughly after though, with washing up liquid and water. KY is great because it never sticks and always shifts.
