TrystanGST's WIP thread

So it's been a week, give or take, since I was able to work on anything. Work (the paying kind) had me on days, which messed up my routine. It was nice to be in class during the day, but I'm glad to be back to my night shift.
I didn't want to go back to my current projects rusty (can you get rusty from a week off?), so I grabbed Dain Deepaxe here from my Bones box to throw some paint at.

Also, my McVey Christmas order arrived. I had wanted to order Light and Dark, but it was sold out. I was able to order the two figures separately, I just couldn't get the scenic base. Imagine my surprise when the package arrived, and the base was inside.

You can also see the Himiko sisters presiding over the battle.

Lovely minis, these mcvey models. And excellent service including the base.

they also look like really good casting quality.

They were. Some of the best I've seen. I originally got the Himiko on the right, but she had some serious casting issues. Mike sent me a replacement, which was perfect (until I slipped with my knife) - no bubbles, no flash, no casting lines. The other two are almost as flawless. No bubbles, no substantive flash, just the barest hint of a mold line on one of them. QC is thru the roof. And the detail....

Yeah, the face on the dwarf is great. And the hair color is turning out very nice too.

Those McVey figures are going to be fun to paint. I look forward to seeing what you do with them.

I wish you luck with the McVey minis, and better success than I had (see gallery) :)

One small thing if you move them around: the swords / halberd is really-really fragile. The ones I have broke 3 times (once going to a painting-jam with them, then on the way back and of course once when going for the hungarian games-day, where I entered them in the diorama category (no idea how, but they survived the way back without a problem)).

The face on the dwarf is coming along very nicely indeed. Just the right level of rudyness on the cheeks. I always find on beards it's best to have more than one tone with its shades and highlites going on it adds more depth to it so maybe a little bit of ginger or auburn at the roots of the beard just on one or two strands?Nothing too different from the current colour so mix a bit of the base colour in with it. Just my two cents ignore as you wish as its looking very good indeed and I don't want you to do something I've suggested and then f*ck it up ;)

Wow great SBS. I am shocked you are able to to the eyes after the skin. I must practice that on my DV cultists. I usually do em first and paint around them.

Call me wierd, but I always do the eyes after the face. Sure, sometimes I need to touch up the cheeks, but no system is perfect.

nah, not weird, perfectly normal in my book, I also paint eyes after the face is more or less finished.

OK you're both weird .:smile-big:
Can't understand that way of working, to me painting a model works the same way as you dress, from the skin out and the lowest part of your skin is your eyes.
So that's why I and a lot of others do them first.
