Wire frame for the tree sounds like a good plan.
Like the term lib, always loved that mini and never got round to painting it, Something i'll have to remedy soon.

Just make sure you prep it. The one he gave me had all kinds of miscasts, and I didn't catch them until I was slinging paint. My fault really, but it was hard to see under all the primer he had caked on (which I had to remove).

I finished the termie. Not going into my gallery here, but I'll get some good final pics and put them up tomorrow.
Meanwhile, more Draz.

Well, started on my first actual commission. I've painted things for friends before, but this is the first time someone is giving me money up front.

Never tried anything like the freehand scales. I think my brush might actually be too large for it. Or maybe my control just isn't good enough.

Good start. If you keep glazing over the lighter dots with the original greens they will blend in nice.
I had a go at commission painting a few years ago, HATED it! I kept second guessing myself and got stressed big time.

nice start :) lots of stuff going on eh?
same experiance as 10 ball, did a few commissions and yeah, hated it. figured out that painting miniatures i don't consider cool never go well.

10 - I'll have to try that glazing.
Skel - sure do. Keeps me busy.

I couldn't do commissions for random strangers, but if a friend wants to throw me a few bucks to paint a figure for them, I'll do it. Especially right now, what with having to buy the missus a new car and having a wedding to pay for. Beats street-walking. Or does it?

Skels hit the nail on the head for me - if I don't like the mini I just can NOT paint it. I just sit there with my W&N series 7 in hand staring at the blasted thing thinking to myself 'I could be painting this instead.......'
LOL that's the job with Eavy Metal out the window!!!

oh and go real thin on the glazing to start or you will cover all the lighter dots :)

Oh - I agree. If someone tried to give me a fugly mini, I'd tell em where to stick it. But luckily my friends have been offering (or I've been demanding - see dark vengeance chaos) interesting minis.

Good luck on your first commission, I am sure your client will get a great miniature! :)
As long as you are comfortable with the miniatures and don't loose the interest in painting while doing commissions, everything is all right. I have the same problem as Skel and 10Ball. Did some commissions a couple of years ago, but it soon became actual 'WORK' and I had to force myself to finish these miniatures. I think I always finished just half-hearted miniatures. :/
But I can see your money problem, I also have to pay for my wedding in 2 months. Damn this shit gets expensive! :D

Looking good Trystan. The highlighting on the green is really nice and I like the scales. That should be a really cool figure when it's all finished. I'll be keeping an eye on your progress.

Yeah, seems like a lot of us have a negative reaction to working on commission. When it comes to doing figures for other people (whether for money or as a gift), the most important thing I've learned is to make sure you make time to paint for yourself too.

Always find it interesting to see how different people approach the green on salamanders. some seem to go real dark and others go to a almost yellow color. Like the look of the scales so far, was attempting something similar on a beast master but didnt go so well but might have another crack it it tonight using the glaze advice from 10ball.

LOL!! I am the opposite, I am hard on myself and for others its , Meh looks good to me! :) But I get your drift expecially when they are paying you. I am painting all my friends IG stuff because he is bad at it and has bad eyesight. But I do my best and with his color scheme it makes it easy to do. For Free too

The black has been fighting me every step of the way. P3 Black and the airbrush don't get along, no matter how thin I make the paint. Ugh. Maybe I'll try straining, or mixing in a separate container.

Also finally figured out my Andrea base. I think you guys will approve. But I'm not tipping my hand just yet :)

Yay! She is off to a good start. I don't have p3 anything yet, but i have had some decent results from army painter black. Funny, though, I just ordered some Gk stuff last week and it arrived today. Normally takes a month and a week.

I kinda like the scales, I saw the colour before I really looked at the detail of the mini and thought "uh-oh Salamander...", with reference to what SPG said, I've always thought of the Salamanders colour as more of a lighter yellow-green, instead of the Dark Angels darker green. Just my 2c. Carry on sir!
