UK GD: hotels near NIA?

Margo

I know I\'ve asked about this before, but the conversation very quickly shifted to the rubber ducks at the Thistle hotel :) I\'ve checked that one, but it seems it\'s quite a long way from NIA. I was wondering what other hotels you, experienced GD-goers, would recommend (close to NIA, that is).

to be honest, all the usual suspects stay in nottingham, and either go over by train to birmingham, or the games Day bus from the GW store in town(Friar Lane). I\'m on the bus, and so are a lot of others. It\'s easier to get to birmingham than by train, easier to do the after games day thing with the other guys if you feel like it, and if you place, it\'s easier to get your stuff photographed at HQ.(otherwise you\'ll be asked to come round again in a few months...no, they don\'t pay the flight)

Aha, I see. The thing is, I\'ll be coming by train from London, probably on Oct 2, and going back to London on Oct 3 evening after the event. So it sort of doesn\'t really make sense -- going to Nottingham and then travelling back to Birmingham, and then -- back to London (I\'m going to be staying in London for about 10 days after the GD).

I\'m not good at waking up early, and the bus from the Oxford Street Plaza store leaves at, I think, about 4 am. So I thought it would be better to come by train at a time vconvinient to me, spend a night at Birmingham, look around the city the previous day, and leave late in the evening after the event. So it\'s pretty much about one night, and I want the hotel to be close to NIA :) I just thought that some of forum-gores might have had such an experience and could recommend a good hotel close to the venue.

Staying in London eh?

You wouldnt want to go with the oxford street store anyhow... you\'d be better off going with the Kensington lot - i think they leave at 6am, which, seeing as you are from Moscow must be abut 10am to your body clock :D

Margo:
any hotel is only a quick taxi ride away, but the best are closest to the city centre. Let me do some investigation, and see what I can remember.
One thing try to stay away from Hotels with addresses of Hagley Road, Very busy at night. Sirens polices cars & Ambulances.

Peter, Mike, thanks for advise!
I\'ll stay away from the Hagley Road. As for the Kensinghton, I don\'t mind the posh lot, but the thing is that it will take me about an hour to reach Kensinghton from Herne Hill, which means I still will have to wake up at 4 am (7 am Moscow time, which is early enough to make me dizzy and yawny for the rest of the day).
So I think I\'ll stick to the hotel idea. I\'ve just found the NIA website with some useful information about hotels nearby. 1,5 miles does sound like a reasonable destination :)

Mike,

of course it\'s useful! Thanks a lot, I\'m off to browse the websites. And I too hope to see you and the rest of the CMON community on the event ;)

Are GD tickets still on sale, or have they all been sold ? Cause with all the CMON people going there, I\'m considering dropping by as well.

If the tickets are all gone, then I\'ll just have to spend the day at the pub (which is probably what you\'d end up doing anyway). :D

it\'s a common misconception that the UK games day sells out...it never does. you can still get tickets. In the last week or two before the event GW gives most spare tickets away for staff member guests and stuff, so as to be able to claim it\'s sold out, but it isn\'t. you can also still get tickets on the door, i spoke to several peeps last year that did

Not me, probably -- coming all the way from Moscow, I think I\'d try and see the most of the event :)

Mmmm, no, I\'m afraid, not. But I\'ve visited the Kensinghton store a couple of times this June, so who knows ... :)

I normally stay at the Ibis Hotel at holloway circus.

The hotel is cheap but clean and provideds a good bed for the night - nothing special just good standard accomodation. The hotel is only a few minuites walk from both the city centre and the NIA so it is ideal located.

If you are not a fussy person about accomodation who just wants a decent hotel that is reasonably priced you can\'t go far wrong with this one. I shall be staying there again this year too....

Can I ask... where in London is Kensington ? Can\'t seem to find the darned map we had last year when we were there. I only went to the Oxford Street as we stayed in Queensway.. or Queens something.
