Apparently, of the 206 billion tons of co2 generated each year, humans are only responsible for 6 billion (the other 200 being divided equally between biological and geological processes). However, it is also an undeniable scientific fact that the current rates of global warming are faster than any that have gone before, including all of the previous mass extinctions and what have you. Hopefully when we have wiped ourselves (and most of the other species) out, evolution will start over and there\'ll be a whole new planet in a few million years.

Yes it\'s not proven beyond all shadow of a doubt, but neither is evolution. It is still fact as far as right-thinking people are concerned, or at least as good as fact.

The 5 degree thing is actually used in map reading as a technique when conditions are bad or there is poor visability. Obviously you don\'t go a thousand miles because thats just stupid! But hopefully global warming will stop all these bad conditions and just leave it nice and sunny :drunk:
Well, it looks like California doesn\'t mind shitting on their neighbor\'s table.
I was listening on the radio that California in an effort to be more green is building a large power grid to Nevada\'s Coal-Burning power plants. Seems a bit self defeating.
And that is why anything you do will be screwed...people.
Everyone wants greener power, healthier air, but no one wants a nuclear power plant in their neighborhood.
In fact, those very same environmentalists that were protesting, and blocking nuclear power plants in the 70\'s - 80\'s are screaming for them now, just not in their backyard.
Earlier, coastal erosion was mentioned. Now, I live in Louisiana, Coastal erosion is happening, but every damn time we try to do something about it, some environmentalist groups put injunctions on us and tie us up for years, if they don\'t outright buy the judge. When the Gulf of Mexico is splashing waves into their backyards, however, they will be the first to point fingers at the government, and demand something be done.
These are the same people who protest and put injunctions up any time we want to build, rebuild or upkeep our levee system.
You want to truly know who screwed New Orleans, not the government, the environmentalists. It could have been prevented had they let us do what we needed to do.
People all want a nice green (tame if possible) planet, but are unwilling to sacrifice the things they have for it, until it is too late, or until it directly affects them.

@EvilDave so why is it that the only green power has to be nuclear. There are so many other alternatives It just may take time and money to develop them.Although wind wave and rivers are a proven technology already.

Why? Because it\'s available now, and due to size and wattage output the far most efficient power source available.
Could you imagine the sheer size a wind field would have to be for a city like Los Angeles?
Yet the Nuclear Plant of one of our carriers could power most of the city.
Do you steal the land from the people who own it or are living there to put up a wind field or flood their homes for water power?
They have wind turbines in I think Sweden that are about 3 mteres hish and cylindical and virtually noiseless that can supply power to approx 10 household. Granted you need it to be windy and you need back up but nucluer is not that green, you still have to deal with the by product. That I wouldnt want in my neighbor hood (The power plant I dont have a prob with)

With one of those powering 10 households, it would take roughly 3 million for Los Angeles alone. (That\'s calculating for a typical Nuclear family of 2 parents and 2.5 kids, according to the last polls. The number of households is probably much higher due to the large amounts of single people.)
I can\'t get numbers on the size of these things so I can\'t estimate the amount of land that would require, but I\'ve seen them and they are big, probably quite a lot of acreage, probably miles of it.
This is also not taking into account the industries and business, which would probably require far more power than the average household.
And this is just one city.
I\'ve also been reading that they tend to do well in coastal areas but not so well inland.
Then you have to get the land itself, then deal with the irrate owners, the people from PETA complaining about how it will screw up the migration patterns of the blue breasted tit mouse, or some other such nonsense, and it will be drug out in courts for years, costing millions, before the first one even makes it into the ground.
