ulthwe farseer w00t!!

Here is my farseer thus far with a few minor adjustments to make her stand out among the other farseers. I plan on doing extensive free hand throughout the robe but I may bitch out when I realise how much time it will take.

The face is almost done, just a few more hues of red on the nose and the lips and i think Im done. I plan on having a strong contrast of White, Black, and Red throughout the piece. Sword and spirit stones being the primary presence of red, maybe some red in the robe will be called for. The base will be full coverage of snow to contrast with the majoritative (not sure thats a word) of black paint.

Can anyone be kind enough to inform me of a really nice brand of snow flock to buy. I have some Woodland Scenics but I dont think I like it, kinda cheap looking.

Any advice would be appreciated. P.S Im aware of how hagard the white spray paint looks (a technique borrowed and from Jeremie Bonament that I fucked up) At least it went on flat so hopefully it wont effect the smoothness of the model.

looking sick dude, for the base dont just make it flat snow, do some like cliff out of cork and cover that with snow and ice and stuff. i would also make the face a big brighter becuase with all the flashy freehand and white snow your gonna need the eyes to be drawn there you know. looks sweet dude.

Oh! Nice! I'm thinking of making a customized Farseer for my craftworld too, to count-as Eldrad.

hey flunk! :)

although im no snow specialist, i just use bicarbonate together with glue and a very little bit of vallejo metal medium (just to make it sparkle a bit more). mix with water to the thinkness you like the snow and brush/dot it on, thats the stuff i used at the two minotaurs in my gallery. looks way better than any brands snow ive seen or tested.

keep it up!

Another way to get an cheap snow effect is to use an old lightbulb, pulverize this (use protectingglasses and gloves here!) and mix this with some PVA-Glue.

That pulverized glass of the bulb will glitter a bit an is looking like fresh snow.

I agree with crazyboy, the face should be some tones brighter.

Have fun painting this.

I have used diffrent snow effects and came up with this combo, vallejo water effects, use transparent water, mix it up with woodland scenic's snow until you get a paste( No Water) then carefully apply it to the base were you want in. The next day you will notice that it will have shrank up a bit, so apply again until you get the depth you like. The thing I like is that your snow will not turn yellw as it ages, and it has a wet look to it from the water effects. Make sure when you apply the last of it that you sprinkle the wood land scenics snow over your paste while it is still wet. Give it a try on a spare fig. to see how you like it first, but I think you will be very happy with it.

thanks for the feedback on the snow you guys, ill definatly try these techniques and let you know which one I have the most success with.

@crazyboy your logic is sound and so i punched up the face with some brighter shades, good point my friend, its advice like this that will bring my models to another level. As for the base I will try some techniques with cork and see if I like it. I was never one for too much of an elaborate base so I dont know if standing the farseer on a mound of cork will be appealing to me.

@ Skelly, i really like your snow on your tauros, i also like the icescicels (spell check?), can you tell me how you make those I'd like to incorperate them to make the base a touch more interesting. Btw your sculpt is looking orgasmic so far, its gonna look insane once its done.

TY :)

the ice is made by vallejo water effect (sillicone) just glue a hair at where the ice begn straight down to the base- glue it there too, otherwise the hair with silicone will bend. then some layers of silicone will do!

i like the monochrome armor, but i think the peice under the neck should be a color, perhaps one that will help the viewers eyes be drawn to the facial area. like with my spacewolf i put a green color around the neck that was very contrasting and unusual for the model but for that reason brought even more attention to the face.
i hope you understand what im saying. you dont "need" it, but thats somthing that will help your model "pop" which is what a GD judge loves ;)

Ya i here ya...a sort of underlining point of interest to compliment the face. I was trying for that effect by giving the chinstrap thing a brighter colour, but realised it doesnt exactly lend that type of support when its actually ON the face. I think some glowing ruins encrusted on the neck-guard will be quite funky looking and will hopefully give the face that emphasis that it needs, thanks for the advice yet again Ansel, and Im glad you like the armourso far!! Still working on your Ork? I've been waiting for an update, get on that shit!!

another update, the blending on the robes are being worked on right now, i'd figure id add some blue to the robe. Working in just whites and blacks got pretty boring.

hrm, that is rather pretty, what are you using for flesh tones? oils? or a particular brand of acrylic?

hi khargrim, thanks for the kind words. I only use Games Workshop's paints. The colours I used on the face (from darkest to lightest) are Scorched brown, Scab Red, Bestial brown, Elf Flesh, Commando Khaki, Space Wolf Grey, and Skull White.

Help needed!

For some odd reason, the hair (which has been sculpted from green stuff) appears glossy despite being primed over and having several layers of paint on it. Has anyone had to deal with this before? It really discourages me from using green stuff again...

Follow up question, is the best way to go about fixing this putting a matt gloss layer over it? I have matt gloss but the brand I got actually removes paint in the process (im a bad impulse buyer ok...) Can anyone recommend a nice brand of matt varnish that wont strip paint!!!

^Dunno if this is the best answer, but here goes:

I had a similar problem with brush-on varnishes. While brushing it on, I think it was re-wetting the paint and causing much smearing. Damn shame, really.

I came up with a quick solution of using a spray-on sealant (eg, Dullcote) before using paint-on varnish. The layer of Dullcote "insulated" the paint and the paint-on varnish.

As I said, this may or may not be related to your particular issue, but it might help.
