Undercoating before using Vallejo model air, is it necessary??

Quite a simple question really, but when I use Vallejo model air, to airbrush a model, do I need to undercoat it first?

An undercoat or primer is needed for most paints.
Vallejo's grey airbrush primer could be helpful for you.

Neccessary? I'd say no. I have yet to prime/undercoat any tank model I have ever painted with Model Air. As for figures, I just sprayed a white metal figure last night with Model Air white. No thinning, very light coats. Covered great.
At the same time, I would say it's not a bad idea to prime undercoat. I just don't think it's always neccessary.

The main reason for using a primer is not to make paint cover better, but to make paint stick better to the surface. Most regular acrylic paints don't stick very well to resin or white metal, regardless of how the paint is applied. So, using a primer (which is designed to stick) is a good idea.

Even the Vallejo acrylic-polyurethane primer doesn't stick really well like one would prefer. Most acrylic and vinyl paints only have so-so adherence to plastic, resin or metal - light enough that if you accidentally scrape against the surface with a brush ferrule for example it'll usually come cleanly off, but even some light handling can wear paint off raised detail or sharp corners.

It's a very good idea to prime your models if you're going to use masking products. Even after a light dusting of Vallejo primer, paint peeled off a few areas of the Vendetta I'm working on where I used liquid laatex + masking tape. On the other hand, VAC+gloss varnish makes for quite a strong paint, so that could be OK if you're not planning to handle the mini often. Your call!
