I recently opted to spray varnish one of my scratch builds "Dave" everything went ok the gloss varnish definitely looks the part however even minimal handling causes the varnish to become tacky/sticky to the touch any ideas where I've gone wrong?

Gloss varnish usually needs more time than flat to dry. It may seem touch dry, but handling it will lead to problems. Best advice- walk away for at least a day.

Put it in the Airing cupboard for a couple of days, the warmth should help with the Varnish 'baking'.
Of course it depends on whose Varnish you used, both GW & Army Painter normally dry within 24 hours................BUT with the unusually hot weather in the UK ATM it may be that the varnish isn't being mixed properly with the propellant. (Just had a Primer misbehave on me because of the heat, kinda my fault should thought and have given it more rattle)

seems to be toughening up I think my mistake was applying too much at a time, I completely ignored the "thin layers and many of them rule" ignore this at your peril. The varnish is "Daler and Rowney" gloss varnish for use with acrylics.

I've not used the gloss but the matt is a pain if you don't use lots of thin layers. I tend to almost dust the layers on for the matt :)

I have some brush on gloss varnish. I used it once. Never had sticky issues, but then I only used it on very small bits. Worked a treat, though.
