Weighting bases?

I love plastic miniatures. Conversion\'s easier, they don\'t chip as easily and so on.
But one gust of wind, and you\'ve just lost your formation.
Does anyone have a cunning method of weighting down bases? It\'d help with the overbalancing on metal (or part-metal) models too.
I guess my problems are confounded by the fact i don\'t want anything on top of the bases. And yet i\'m still hoping for room for a small magnet under each base, and pegs coming through the bases for when i have to use metal models.
I\'ve had several thoughts, but none have been able to accommodate the above, or have just been too light (hmm, small but heavy... depleted uranium perhaps...).
If only liquid metal really was what it says.

Use Milliput to fix the magnets in and fill up the empty spac on the underside.

Only other thing you can do is glue metal offcuts and tags from minis into the bases.

Or use heavy materials to base the minis - slate or rocks.

I glued my gaunts to 2p pieces because they irritated me so much.

How about small ball bearings? They\'re steel, so pretty dense, and you can pack them into the space available and keep them in with putty. That would maximize your metal/volume I think. I\'m not sure where you would get them but I once acquired lots of \"ball bearings\" by buying a box of shotgun shells :D That may not be an option in the UK, you can NOT buy ammo here in Canuckistan unless you have a firearms license.

Well, i use pennies to weigh down my assualt marines with the big, heavy jump packs and i\'ll be using metal BBs to weigh down the feet of my titan when i get back to working on it.

So do you need a magnetic game board to use those? Or are they weighty on their own.

In other news... i still \"pnw\" at Lunar Lander.

I use metal washers, they\'re quite cheap at the local home store. They leave a nice hole in the middle to put a rare earth magnet or piece of a magnet sheet. For the bases that have the tabs sticking through you can cut the washer in half with a hacksaw, dremel or something, but those are usually metal models so you probably dont need the weight in the base. No idea why the MacCragge box has those darn tabs under the feet on those plastic figs, I guess it was too hard to glue feet to the base for the kids or something. Using a penny might be cheaper but I think it\'s illegal in most countries to cut or deform the coin, I dont know if gluing the coin to a model is considered deformation or not but I dont wanna find out. They also come in a wide variety of sizes so you dont have to put a dollar or 2 dollar coin under your Tau Crisis suits \")

Eh, i think the Feds have better things to do than break into my house, open up random tackle boxes and search the underside of mini bases looking for pennies i glued down there. *not too worried*

Which Amendment is illegal search and seizure again?

Haha, no idea, about them laws south of the border. Regardless of where you live I think it\'s a silly outdated moronic law in this day and age though. If I wanna use a bill to wipe my arse or draw a little mustache on the queens face I dont see why anyone else should care. It\'s my money, not the queens or the governments. ;)

But what about if you\'re at the local game store showing off your newest figure and some cop is arresting some shoplifter and notices your defaced coin? Unlikely, insanely small chance that he\'d actually take action instead of ignoring it, but the penalties are pretty stiff so I\'m just gonna play my goody two shoes card as far as that\'s concerned lol In Jr Highschool I had a row of coins on my laces, penny, nickel, dime, quarter, looney on each rung. Darn I WAS cool...oooo yeah! Oh no, I mean I knew a guy who had that! Yeah, for you feds out there! :D

These are all good ideas. I will usually put the command group on a regiment base and weigh that down with washers and milliput.

I put a magnetic base on the bottom of the figure. The pack comes with a metal sheet which i then cut to size and glue in the bottom of a movement tray.

Plastic figures are then as stable as metal ones and i can quite literally \'toss\' whole movement trays of figures about without worry of them falling over. In fact i dont store my armies in padded cases anymore - i transport them in their movement trays just in shallow boxes, I can be set up in 5 mins too and then go for a beer while my opponent spends ages getting individual figures out of his padded case. :flip:

The bases and trays are not cheap, but then neither are most of the padded army cases that most use...

 with these bases i have had a \'vertical\' game of W40k on a whiteboard in my office! Its actually pretty cool as you can draw terrain features directly on the board with a marker pen, and write all your sttuses (like panic etc) directly on the board as well! My white board also has 1\" squares printed on it so we even dispnsed with a ruler...

Whilst i agree with your sentiment technically you are incorrect. In most countries it all belongs to the head of state. the notes and coins are their promise to you to pay you the amount written on them. In fact the notes in the UK bear the words \"I promise to pay the bearer the sum of £5\" (or £10 whatever) and are signed by the Governor of the bank of England.

There was an odd bit on U.S. bills a century ago that people used to make jokes about.

\"This note is legal tender for all debts public and private and is redeemable in lawful money at the United states Treasury, or any Federal Reserve bank.\"

The wording was in use from 1934-1968 when it had replaced bills based on the gold standard. What \"lawful money\" was is the basis of all the jokes.

The technical term for cash bills is \"bearer bonds.\"

In England they call it a pound \"note\"
In the USA it\'s a dollar \"bill\"
Bills and Notes are forms of paper saying the bearer is the creditor for x value.

Fishing weights...

Weights (or \"sinkers\") for fishing.

You can cut off a piece or use the whole thing, flatten it a bit with a hammer or pliers, and it\'ll fit on a given side of a base underneath, if you don\'t want to take up the whole thing.

I missed this before. That\'s BRILLIANT!
I have a game of Dragon Pass where I made magnetic pieces and mounted the board on a sheet of steel on my wall. It\'s great to be able to play and take a break and not worry about the cats (or opponent\'s children) knocking the pieces about while we\'re away.
