this is the real deal....

Yup really hardened. Most of them were part of the line crew. Placing 40 foot poles and stringing 900 pair cable is no easy task.

Maybe not as hardened as the steel or coal, but hard nonetheless....

Oh, I imagined (as Darthfoley probably did) hardened phone workers on the front lines of the office bustin\' their asses off day in day out, hawking new phone services and rates...

Oh, those poor, brave, men. I doff my hat to them.:(

\"Ohhhh say can you see, by the dawns ear-ly light, what so proudly we....\"

I see...

Yeah, I guess the term \"phone workers\" makes you think of a bank of folks answering calls. (although that job is tough enough)

I guess I don\'t know what else to call them, we all refer to ourselves as Phone guys (or gals)!.

We\'re not all like that, Supervike. I\'ve been gaming for most of my life, and mentioned that fact to some coworkers recently (we may string 1/2\" coaxial cable, but otherwise it\'s the same job). They didn\'t seem any less interested than office workers or even some hobby shop employees I\'ve worked with in the past.

Ah, linemen. That makes more sense. :)

...but you have to be a bit careful with the spelling. They tend to throw a \'wobbly\' if you refer to them as \'linenmen\'.

In the UK , It\'s the same as being asked if you are\' \"Good with color\".

(euphemisms for shirt lifters, uphill gardeners etc...NOT!!! that I have any problens with this [Christ who wants to live ina PC world?] just joshing:D:flip::bouncy:

Personally I don\'t give a Rat\'s about being considered weird. I\'m old enought to give \'em a mental \"Agincourt salute\" and move on.

Let\'s face it, if being normal consists of pointless discussions about football (Soccer to you US readers) while propping up the local bar, or sitting watching endless inane drivel supposedly emulating \"Real life\" (Soaps), then I\'m proud to be considered Weird.
At least my IQ\'s not being rotted by the \"scandal\" of David Beckhams alledged sex life.

I used to be happy in my nerdy geekdom, we were cool nreds, we knew what we were and didn\'t take ourselves too seriously.

Over here in Oz everyone just thinks I\'m weird.

I\'m not weird, I\'m unique :D

Actually I am weird, even for a geek, but I don\'t care, being different is cool

I actually laugh at the people who try not to look different. I mean a polo shirt and kakis (what seems to be a style with the preps and \'cool kids\' around here)? What is this world comming too.

Then again the meek may inherit the world but it\'ll still be run by the geeks, nerds, and weirdos.

Or vinegar and salt potato chips...

ahem..

Well, my hobbies are a bit different from other people my age, but I got cover hobbies like footie(soccer) basketball and that kinda stuff :) Personally I don\'t really liked being eyed and considered weird so I try to fit in... so far I\'ve succeeded :p

Yeah, I do the same thing. Not that I\'m ashamed or anything, I just don\'t want anybody knowing about my hobby...;) I have the same thing going as Calavera: I play soccer, and do some trials biking, etc. This seems to stave off the violent personalities that my less inconspicuous mini painting/gaming counterparts seem to attract like flies. Honestly, I had those hobbies waaay before I started painting, so it\'s not like I\'m being dishonest or untrue to myself...right? Right!?!

And anyways, most of my friends, while being bikers too, like D&D, Warhammer, or other nerdy pursuits.

I\'ve also found that in my advancing years, :D I\'ve become less concerned with what others think...Why, we do the stupidest things in full view of the entire school population (possibly explaining the hate mail I\'ve recieved lately) Ever stick a pop can on your bike\'s back tire and ride around, pretending you\'re on a motorbike? I have, for hours and hours on end, and let me tell you, it doesn\'t make you friends, far from it.

If any of you young farts are interested in trials biking, click on the link....

Trials videos

Watch some videos, read up on the explanation on the home page....
Resistance is futile!!

I\'m with Duende: mini painting is one of the more normal of my pursuits :D I have such a long history of \"oddness\" that nothing at this point comes as much of a surprise to people. I started out as a dork, moved early on to a \"long haired hippie freak\" (circa 1967), from there to wacko artist, and on to geekdom. And just for good measure: \"former mental patient\" as the headlines would read. :)

Finn\'s right! REVEL IN YOUR ODDNESS!

Oddly enough, I have considered myself a geek for most of my life. Starting in the late 1970\'s when I was a Scout (earning my Eagle) and started playing D&D - from there things went strait to hell, with computers, Sci Fi, and more gaming. Now I say with pride that I am a geek, and to quote a buddy of mine I \"shoot right fair\" with a number of weapons so I can defend that Geekdom :D;D:D

Please define geek

For us non-native English speakers, geek is a very difficult term to grasp. Why I do not even know the difference between a geek and a dork!

From what I gather from this forum, I am a happy geek, reveling in computers, maths, toy soldiers and most kinds of games. But I also have a life (and 3 beautiful children thank you very much) other passions, some conversation outside computers and games, and as much of a liking for beer as the next guy. Does that prevent me from joining the geek community?

Thank you for your help, I would really like to know if I\'m a geek or not (it would be an interesting addition to my business card), specially since I have seen many of my long-time heroes professing their geekness with pride on this very forum

Well at least some passing interest in
mathematics is required for geekdom, in
fact a moderate proficency is required even for nerds...

Otherwise you\'re just a dork:D:D:D
