ZeCorto - orginally a geek was a side show entertainer who did such things as bite the head off of chickens - the term has evolved to include those of us who are into gaming, computers and such - it is interchangable with Dork and Nerd, and was fo rthe longest time a term of derision from the more studly athletic types - then people started realizing that while looks were nice, money makes you comfortable and geeks became big, and people embraced their geekdom.

Don\'t forget this is the industry that spawned Scott Adams (Dilbert\'s creator).

Gee, what\'s the weirder answer:
1- I spend my free time taking inch-tall sculptures and painting them in as believable and realistic a manner as I can.

2- I put on armor, take a ratan sword and go get the tar beat out of my be some other guy in armor with a ratan spear.

You choose your circles.

That is a most challenging question....

I will give you my personal answer...others may differ;)

Geek: Bill Gates is a Geek. Possibly the arch-Geek. Posibly the anti-Dork:D

A Geek is someone who knows an awful lot about a very little. Your average PhD student....

Dork: (purely IMO) GWBush is a Dork. Possibly the arch-dork. Possibly the Anti- Geek:D

A person who knows f*ck all about f*ck all but has a thin veneer of normalness..i.e. they can walk and talk at the same time:D

Does that help? Anyone care to offer better explanations about Dork V Geek?

Spot on IMO but the OED also adds social ineptitude to the definition of geek. Nerds are pretty much the same as geeks.
I have also noted that some of my more IT/Tech associates use the term Uber Geek as a term of affection/admiration?

Well, I suppose it doesn\'t help that 50% of my money goes to support the economy of YOUR state :D

Nope - most of that Texas Tea is from Alaska - Uncle Bill Clinton shut down a good chunck of the wells here in Texas a while back. :D

Yeah, I guess the term \"phone workers\" makes you think of a bank of folks answering calls. (although that job is tough enough)

I guess I don\'t know what else to call them, we all refer to ourselves as Phone guys (or gals)!.

Ah, linemen. That makes more sense. :)

Linemen is the correct term.
However, when I was in the Air Force, we called ourselves \"Cable Dawgs\"
Now I\'m just another one of those damn telephone Translations engineers in my pristine Chappell in a remote town in Kansas.

I suspect social ineptitude is a dimension of a number of psychological conditions and public categorisations: Geek, Nerd, Anorak, Dork etc...

I would suggest that Geeks, Dorks, Nerds and Anoraks would all display social ineptitude. I would rather be trapped on a desert island island however, with either a Geek or an Anorak.

Your point about Uber Geeks is quite valid. I dissed Mr Gates when I referred to him as a simple Geek. He is definitely an Uber Geek:D

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing

Thank you all for your definitions and for the wealth of information (somewhat overwhelming, specially the bit about biting the heads off of chickens which must be the direct ancestor of reality tv)

I hope to be compared more to Bill Gates than to Dubbya, the former seeming more sincere. But now Finn instills doubt into my mind since I might really be an Anorak for all I know; since I do not know what it means either (I do own an anorak, but it lacks the capital A so it can\'t be the same thing)

It will take more than the combined genius of all posters in this thread to educate me I\'m afraid. But thank you for a very good lesson. At least I now know what a lineman is.

Finn\'s guide to insults...

This may, or may not, help:D

1a) Someone bigger than me calls me a Geek:

Response: I chuckle in a knowing sort of way and then ask him how much he earns a year?

1b) Someone smaller than me calls me a Geek:

Response: ditto

2a) Someone bigger than me calls me a Dork/Nerd:

Response: I laugh gaily and then either hack into his computer and infect him with anything I have available, follow him into the Gents with a baseball bat or have a ton of quick-drying cement delivered to his house whilst he is on holiday...You get the idea:D

2b) Someone smaller than me calls me a Dork/Nerd:

Response I\'d twat him there and then to save time later..and besides I am a busy man I would hate to forget:D

Anorak???? I would just play that one \'by ear\'. i.e any of the above responses may, or may not , be appropriate;)

I\'d never heard the word \"Anorak\" before; which is odd, since this website claims it\'s an Innuit word. The local Innup\'ik/Innuit people call them parkas (or parkies for the ladies).

If a group of misfits found a feather on the ground...

..an Anorak would talk about what kind of bird it came from.

..a Geek would talk about some obscure legend concerning feathers.

..a Dork would tell a joke about reproductive organs.

..a Nerd wouldn\'t say anything, but would know both the species and the legend. He wouldn\'t get the joke.

That look about right? :D
