What are folks spending their hard earned dosh on?

Given the recent fall in fortunes of GW, i wondered how people are spending their cash? Is it just that there is less cash around for the hobby? Or is it that people are moving to other manufacturers? Is it crowd funding? Has kickstarter kicked GW into touch?

Me? I'd say that i have spent 50 per cent on kickstarter (wrath of kings, zombicide, raging heros) and indiegogo (rocco), 35 per cent ebay (confrontation and old citadel mainly) and may be 10 percent GW (i just could resist the nurgle bug) with the rest mainly being spent on paints, paint stands and assorted bits of equipment (none of which came from GW with the exception of one of the new technical paints). I've probably spent about 30 percent less than i would normally have done in a year. And but for kickstarters, oh the buyer's remorse, i would have been much lower.

Put it another way, is someone out there winning at GW's expense or is the hobby just going into decline?

My hobby related funds have gone into more companies than I can list here reasonably. None of it has been GW. It wasn't rage driven, more apathy toward what they had on offer. I would say since stepping away from GW and gaming I have actually spent more money as I discover all the wonderful minis, paints, tools, display bases and bigatures out there to hobby with.

These days I spend my hobby money on getting casts of my own sculpts. I've backed Kingdom Death and Warploque on Kickstarter and bought the occasional resin miniature. Other than paints I haven't shopped at a Gamesworkshop in over 10 years. There stuff doesn't strictly appeal to me anymore and I don't currently play wargames anyway. Still, sad news.

my hobby funds go to other companies, KS, tutorialDVDs and various artbooks. I spend as much as before (sometimes even more), just not @ GW.

Until November I didn't have any real spare cash to go around. The things I do want to buy from GW are OOP and I refuse to buy from ebay for what I want. My funds have insisted gone on latex model horses....

Well I bought most of my models a while back and have so much to paint I cant pretty much say that GW are not getting much of my money this year. My purchases from GW last year were £0 and in 2012 they amounted to some assorted paints and the Forgeworld monster book. Forgeworld does have a fair few models that I do wish to get - particularly the Basilisk and the Ettin. With random other smaller models arousing my interest. The money I have had spare for leisure has been spent mainly on 2D art supplies and a few blurays, boardgames and videogames. Quite a few artbooks, and instructional art books as well.

Quite a range of leisure activities causes quite a spread of funding and people who have lots of different hobbies may favour one over the other at different times. Games Workshop ignore their adult market for some bizarre reason. When people realise this they will potentially ignore GW and start shopping around. I know I did. I think GW's support of 1 or 2 games is a major reason why people are fed up with them. Back when I was a kid, GW were pumping out lots of games so it was fun to see what they were going to do next. Now we all know whats coming and they are a one trick pony. Much more interesting stuff coming out from the other companies and Kickstarter as well. Fantasy Flight are a way better games company than GW. Unfortunately they lost major mojo the day White Dwarf turned into an inhouse product catalogue. Its been rolling downhill ever since.

I'd love them to go back to the GW of old with a fresh strategy and new management style. In the meantime, I will always be shopping around.

Kickstarters really do soak up a lot of money. Not sure they sate the hobby itch as well as regular purchasing. KS's, with the long waits leaving the itch unscratched, and eventual BIG box coming with an overwhelming feeling. Zombicide 1+2 served me well though, Sedition Wars is one I wish I'd never done and might even make my BIG box of that a gift to a mate, Deadzone is one to get around to, the Red Box Games #1 one will come when it comes and probably jump the queue of minis to be painted, the AvP one should be a long time yet but'll probably still beat out an arrival of my Heresy Dragon. An unattended hobby itch has to be satisfied by picking up the occasional "oo ooh, I must have it" mini from the cmon front page.

My Girlfriend...

Hah! Just wait till it becomes wife and kids.

I've reigned in an awful lot of my mini spending since my boy came along, though. Used to be that I would splurge easily $100 or so every month. I've just tallied my toll for the past 5 months, and it's about $200.

Ok, so more on music and less onminiatures than previously?

Yeah, I mean... I have paints, some 200+ pots, so I only occasionally need to replace a pot here and there. I have more miniatures than I will ever paint in my life time, so I only buy the absolute must-have stuff. I have raised my bar quite considerably as to what I regard as a must-have model, so it really isn't that many miniatures any more that I really feel I MUST have. Sure, I buy some, but not that much and quite irregularly.

Music, on the other hand... I'm very old-fashioned when it comes to music listening. I can't stand listening to music from a computer, other than briefly to check something out. The idea of using Spotify or similar doesn't appeal to me at all. The idea that "everything" is available for free (or for a small fee) takes away something for me. First of all, because everything is NOT available... a lot of obscure stuff, stuff that I listen to, is not available. Then I feel that something gets lost when you can access (more or less) everything at any time. I place great value in having a collection of stuff that I have carefully chosen to include in that collection. Plus, you can't beat the feeling of vinyl records!

So, that's what I put a lot of my spare cash on.

freak! ive really lost a lot of ground to your recordcollection lately. but i believe we spend about the same amount on miniatures (not very much). most of my cash goes to junior one way or the other... and perhaps some ships to the x-wing game :)

Living :(

Hehe, in fairness last year I put a blob of cash into the Rivet Wars and Wraith of Kings Kickstarters and a few bits for my Horus Heresy army, oh and an iPad (which I paid off over 6 months). The girlfriend was out of work for six months and I seriously looked at the number of unpainted miniatures I've got and decided that I was better off getting my backside into gear and doing some actual painting rather than purchasing. I do put £25 a month into a "hobby fund" that I use for bits that I want, but I fully expect this year to be a lean one as well.
