What brush sizes do you use?

I actually only use 1 brush for everything, which has been a GW fine detail, and I guess it must be the way I paint because they tend to last me a long time (relative to others reports here).

However there are a few things that bother me a little about the brush so I have started my search for a W&N7 which will feel the same painting, but without some of the other drawbacks of GW brushes.

Actually I\'m using sable brushes (Springer Pinsel - Germany).
After many different brand of brushes I have decided to use only this one and I have bought 20 brushes for every size I use, in this way I dont have to search the \"right brush\" in stores when I need one ;)

I have 2, 1, 0 and 00 sizes, but for the 90% of the work the 1 and 0 are ok.

Are you telling us that you have 20 size 00 brushes and 20 size 0 brushes and so on and so on? :eek:

Dave, I reckon a GW \"fine detail\" brush would be lucky to be a 0, but certainly not near a 00.

IMHO. Maybe I bought freaky brushes.

When it sounds like my brush choice is the same as the majority of people here. Like I said, I use the GW \"fine detail\" brush (equivilant of maybe a 0 IMH0) for most of my painting and use a 00 for detail.

I\'ve been painting for a while now, but I like to ask just because I\'m not really in \"the scene\" and don\'t know anybody else that paints except my girlfriend (who thought it was the coolest hobby ever, so I bought her the basics, she\'s just finishing her first model which going to be soooo much better than my first model!) :D

These guys said they do MOST of their painting with a GW standard brush. I own one of these and barely ever user it at all. They said they use a \"detail\" brush for doing eyes etc. and barely ever touch a \"fine detail\" brush, the latter of which is my standard affair.

Kolinsky sable, mostly use a 1 and a 0, but I also have a 10/0 a GW fine and standard and a variety of brushes I\'ve cut the bristles on for specific purposes.

I find I get into a groove with a certain brush and use it almost exclusively, I just painted a unit of archers completely with the size 1, and I did my carnosaur completely (apart from basecoat) with the size 0!

Well... i\'ve never been able to afford the sable brushes. i use \"Golden Nylon\" brushes by Loew-Cornell. They come in a 5 pack with sizes;
Round 10/0
Round 5/0
Round 3/0
Round 0
Round 1

To be honest... i knew NOTHING of brushes when i bought them and was just looking for something straight and small. They\'ve lasted me through the end of my Space Wolves army (all painted poorly and abused the brushes doing them) and into my new serious attempts at painting minis. So all in all, about a year and a half of not so nice treatment.

I mostly use a size 1 as my standard and 1/2 for the smaller details. 0 is easy to use but, it gets annoying for some odd reason, don\'t ask me why. but figures that i use a zero on come out...uh below my standard. lol:p

@nymphomaniac- For a personel avatar go to your account , browse for the one you want then click on view all avatars and select personal and finally click on update info. It sometimes takes a while to come into effect but just be patient:).

I\'ve used and abused many different makes including the GW red handled brushes.
Currently I work with a single Daler sable size 2 and the rest are Winsor & Newton Series 7. (1, 0, 00, 000)
I still have an old Black handled Citadel 00 which I use occasionally. The point is no longer as fine as it once was, but it still is good for applying edge lines or washes. I have found that the Series 7 are in reality the best brushes for smoothness of application and control. As long as you take care of the brushes and wash them with a good quality brush soap they will last quite a while. (Some of my series 7\'s are a number of years old, one 000 is roughly 10 at least.)

I\'ve found that even with the best of care and attention that the lifespan of the GW brushes isn\'t as comparable with W&N series 7. If I got 6 months out of a GW brush I was lucky. Now I restrict their use to mixing paint, Drybrushing smoothbrushing and when really old applying PVA glue for bases.

Like many others, I have W&N Series 7. Sizes 1, 0 and 000. And like Fizl, my inept ability to throw paint at a miniature is not a function of the brushes. Thus, until I am good enough, I\'ll use W&N Sceptre Gold brushes and leave the elevated Series 7 in their showcase. No, that\'s not really true, it depends on how much the miniature inspires me as to which brushes I\'ll use.

I found one of these the other day as well, couldn\'t work out how I got hold of it. Has a nice point on it too!!! Was discussing it with Tammy, and I believe they are quite old. Gave it a shampoo and set, and it looks good as new!!!

But I like to have lots of brushes for various uses and have anything from 4 to 10/0

yeah, those old black GW brushes were very good, they lasted a long time, but all mine are long dead.

I can\'t believe that Vallejo brushes were not mentioned. I use a bunch of brushes for many different applications. The ones that see the details Hilights and shadows of my mini\'s are vallejo 1 and somethimes 0. I have 4 #1\'s and 4 #0. Funny though I have been using the same #1 and #0 for a little over a year and there still perfect.

Hands down Vallejo brushes are perfect for my painting style. I have 4 Winsor and newton that I cant use. Dont know why, the paint is not as fluid with these brushes I was noticing streaks and the W&N brushes kept drying out while I was in the middle of painting.

I also luv the Robert Simmons big fat green handle brushes, best of all there on the cheap and good for big dorkey hands like mine. They paint is smooth and ther flat @1 and 2 are perfect for base coats and wet blending. They can be purchased at MIchael\'s type stores...

PS Jen Hayley had some bad ass brushes from Raphiel (spelling) at Gencon that I had the pleasure to use. Yes people I used her brush and it was fabulous. I could not find them in houston and refuse to order brushes online. I have to touch them first and dip them in water...
