What constitutes - 5 = gaming standard

It\'s all down to personal choice. I\'ve put pics in my gallery which fulfill and beyond the \'tabletop\' 3 colours and base but the scores are below 5, or only just above.
Just have to take the rough with the smooth.
It is cool MINI or not and that leaves it wide open.

Ive painted a fair few commission things now and have pretty much managed to standardise my tabletop painting. Its ususally two-three highlights with details and shading:

That discussing the minutiae of a process that is entirely subjective is pointless. A mini is worth what it averages after 50-60 votes...

Well, as others have already posted I would rate them at a 7...BUT: they were probably (I can\'t really say) done over and over in a paint program which is lame and there might have been several people involved in painting them, so rather a 6. Still better than most of the stuff I see on the table. Def. better than avarage mind you.

BTW, how can you see the votes some one gave a pict??? Is that possible?

You can\'t see a breakdown of individual votes, no. If you\'re a CMON supporter you get the feature to see an average score of only the votes of registered members.

How can you possibly make the statement \"probably done in a paint program\"?
I\'ve read some garbage comments on here in my time but that one is a real classic.

Dragon, I think you are a bit too harsh here. These images were taken from GW site. We can ask studio people - there are several here but usually, images like this, that is to say, images that are intended for publishing or web presentation undergo very extensive post-processing. At the very least it will be sharpening and contrast enchaining, often color correction as well. Again, for publishing it could be retouched as well.
Granted all this will not make poorly painted mini look good, but it will definitely enhance visual impact, which is the purpose of this particular picture after all.

Well, living in the city next to Nottingham where all of the studio paintjobs are and having been to whw a fair few times I can say that they are every bit as good in the flesh, if not better..

A couple of times, I checked out the gallery of a poster who had a lot of criticism, only to find out that their own miniatures compared miserably to the one they were criticizing. One time, the poster didn\'t even have any of their own entries! I agree with the 6-7 range. I also second the suggestion to have a samples page, having several examples for each score.

Just because I can\'t paint a mini that scores above a 7 doesn\'t mean I can\'t tell the difference between a miniature that scores a 7 and one that scores a 9. Or that I can\'t give advice (and even useful advice!) on someone\'s miniature that scores an 8. Of course they\'re also free to ignore my advice...

By your reasoning, all judges in a painting contest should be better painters than all the painters they are judging...

I go by the basic standard GW has set for minis being brought into the store: three colours and some sort of basing material. I think \"tabletop standard\" is exactly what is required for gaming itself. Anything above and beyond that raises it to showcase standard. Those marines that were posted at the beginning are definitely showcase quality. That is GW\'s way of showing off their pretty models. I have never before seen an entire army that was being used for gaming that looked that nice.

In fairness to Shades, I think he/she was talking about more than just a couple of points difference between the mini being critiqued and the minis belonging to the critic. Also, I\'m sure that you try to leave helpful critiques and sensible scores rather than slamming somebody\'s work for the sake of it.

Unlike, for example, everyone\'s favourite penguin, who doesn\'t even dare put any minis in his gallery, despite a boasted 20 years\' experience painting minis....

This subject needs a bullet to the torso, then another to the head. Figuratively speaking of course. Then we can all go home and forget about it.

There is no single answer to this (though i provided my own earlier) so the thread becomes a tail-chasing affair.

Come on, let\'s all drop it, eh?

What, so it can be resurrected again next month? I think it\'s going to keep coming up whatever, and ignoring it isn\'t going to do anything. Perhaps if the voting guidelines were given a facelift (for example), we might not see it quite so often. Until then yes, this argument is going to go round and round because so many people think something should be done, but nothing ever is.

Might seem a silly question but even if something was done and a full overhaul of the voting system was enacted would this solve all problems? or would we all be back on the forums the next day bitching about how the new system was rubbish/broken.:cussing:
Not that im saying we should close this thread, it fun to watch all the old thread dragons roaring at each other:D

Not unless we also overhaul the human race to make them not be dicks. However, a short description of approximately what\'s expected for each score might give people who\'ve been (un)fairly judged an idea of what to expect. Obviously, you\'d have to include a disclaimer about how it\'s \"cool *mini* or not\" and how some people are arses regardless.

There might have been a misunderstanding. Skeeve\'s post said what I meant to say.
The pict (understandably) saw a couple of clicks in photoshop or whatever (I didn\'t mean to imply that the actual painting was done in ps). I went to WHW and the minis ARE clean and crisp but they don\'t match the pict 100%.

I am a miniature collector as well as painter. I personally own several miniatures painted by former Eavy Metal team painters and also actual studio paintjobs featured in the WD and they don\'t look more different to IRL then other miniatures usually do. Photos of miniatures are never a perfect representation of how they look IRL - sometimes for the better but sometimes for the worse. They\'ve messed up the colours real good on some miniatures featured in WD.

Truly worth the cost.
I put more stock in that score, and the 50-70 average is true-ish.
An arse slamming it with a 1 can\'t be fixed by an embellishment with a counteractive 10, but all in all, it is less likely that an arse will pay the cost to support a site, just so they can slap 1\'s on everything.

The only REAL place I take and look for crits is here in the forums, and in the comments on my posts.

BTW, I score Table-top mini\'s with a 3.
The only 10\'s I usually give are the ones from Europe, with the freehanded masterpieces...LOL.

I would still score those Marines as a 5-6.
they\'re so much cleaner than those expected to see an actual game.
