What, exactly, can trigger an extra turn?

The rule book says "a player draws a card and there are not enoug miniatures or the requested zombie type".

Spawning 4 walkers is pretty clear about this. Some cases, however, get trickier.

1. A zombie needs to split for equal length paths, but no miniature is available: I interpreted that since no card was drawn, no extra turn occurred. Players choose which way the zombie goes, interpreting the abomination splitting rule as applying to any miniature that could not legally be duplicated.

2. Fatties spawn when the bank is running out of walkers: I interpreted that fattie was the "requested zombie type", and since that hadn't run out, we simply placed as many walkers as we could and stopped there (rather than giving walkers an extra turn)

3. Hasn't occurred yet, but can an "Aaaaah" search trigger an extra movement?

Am I nerfing zombies? We're figuring things out at the same time so it's not like we've been doing especially good so far (we mostly just get eaten), but I might as well know the correct way.

The way I interpret the rules is as follows:

1. A zombie needs to split for equal length paths, but no miniature is available: I interpreted that since no card was drawn, no extra turn occurred. Players choose which way the zombie goes, interpreting the abomination splitting rule as applying to any miniature that could not legally be duplicated.

The zombie type that has run out does not gets an extra turn because what then happens if the extra turn causes a further split? And then another? And another?
How you handle the movement of the odd zombie out, is your call - but I too would borrow the Abomination not-splitting movement rule.

2. Fatties spawn when the bank is running out of walkers: I interpreted that fattie was the "requested zombie type", and since that hadn't run out, we simply placed as many walkers as we could and stopped there (rather than giving walkers an extra turn)

I see the "requested zombie type" as "1 fattie plus 2 walkers", and if the walkers have run out, you still place the fatty, and then walkers, and only walkers, get an extra activation. If it's fatties that have run out, you still place the walkers, and then fatties and only fatties get an extra activation. If both fatties and walkers have run out, both types get an extra activation.

3. Hasn't occurred yet, but can an "Aaaaah" search trigger an extra movement?

Yes.

I've played it that the extra turn occurs only during the spawning phase. So for 1 & 3, no extra turn. For 2, a fattie brings two walkers and if either run out, then that type gets an extra turn. I could see the argument that the Aaaaah card was drawn, so there should be an extra turn but I haven't played it that way.

I would agree with ScorpionOx. An extra turn from Aaaah! would make sense, since therwise it's just a non-draw, but the chances of that happening are fairly slim, and often easily avoidable. (you just have to have killed one walker before searching) so it's probably fairly moot.

I would definitely like to see an errata for the fatty spawning, but until then I'll go with Scorp's plan.

I've had a chance to look at the rulebook and stand by my initial answer; the "Aaaah" card would not cause an extra turn. The caution box at the bottom of page 10 specifies that this occurs "during the Spawn Phase" and the "Aaaah" card could not be drawn in that phase of the game.

A case of different wording in the PDF?

The PDF Rulebook said:
So many Zombies, so few miniatures! The Zombicide box contains enough Zombies to invade a city. However it is possible that a player draws a card and there are not enough miniatures of the requested Zombie type.
In this case, the remaining Zombies are placed (if there are any) THEN all the Zombies of the requested type gain an extra activation at once.

This doesn't specify 'during the Spawn Phase' just '[when] a player draws a card'.

And, as I understand it, the PDF is newer, so takes precedence.

It is indeed a case of different wording. As the box is in the spawning section, it could easily be construed that it is only during that phase. Knowing there is a difference adds credence that the phase does not matter.
