What happend?

I hate the ads on Coolmini, especially the pop-unders!

I can\'t believe this website still uses them. I\'ve even had the ad companies that CMON uses try and sneak them under my popup blocker, until I found and blocked the offending Javascript.

I turn off my adblocker on TMP because they\'re ads are for things I care about, and I want to support them.

But here, I get all kinds of spam. CMON is like browsing the web in 2000, with popups and popunders, and useless ads for things I don\'t care about. So I block them all, because I despise them.

I wouldn\'t mine some well placed Google Ads that were on topic ( miniatures ). I don\'t mind ads from mini related manufacturers either. But getting hit with a pop-under for a Baptist Church in New Orleans is just silly. I killed that ad script right away.

But any site that runs popup-popunder ads in this day and age deserves my wrath. I find myself frequenting this place less and less.

Adblock+ and Filterset.g are the only way to make browsing CMON bearable w/o getting half a dozen popups.

My thoughts

I don\'t think that is an adult ad, as Chern said. Adult ads are much more... adult. You see this sort of stuff on billboards, TV adverts, the cinema, bus stops... as well as many other non-adult websites. Everywhere where children can easily be exposed to it. I rate this advert a 12A (or a PG-13 for you Americans), not an 18 (or R for the Americans) :p Frankly I don\'t find it very interesting, and I block the ads anyway because I\'m a wonderful dutiful paying member :drunk:

As to the 18+ issue... there\'s nothing to stop anybody viewing all the miniatures and forum discussion if they are not a member, so why do you have to be 18 to register? ??? Apart from being able to give out contact details to adults on the forums, there seems little reason. Plus, there are mods to deal with that sort of stuff if needs be, aswell the ever-useful Forum Guidelines :D I don\'t think there is any stuff on the site that is unsuitable for people under 18. I know some of the minis are pretty porny and weird, and there is some innuendo on the forums (you know who you are lol) but they\'re minis for Christ\'s sake! It\'s not like this is porn site. And the forum discussion - once again, all the topics handled here are done by a sensible group of mature people, with moderators at hand. There are\'t any perverts as far as I can see (and with the moderation system it seems people like that could be dealt with anyway), and again you could view everything going on without having to register and certify your age. If adults knowing your age is the problem, the mods don\'t seem to mind (not saying they should either). Indeed, the How Old Are You? thread was started by Vikey! :]

Also: when I registered, I don\'t remember being asked to state I was over 18 (although it was 8 months ago so it\'s hard to remember exactly how it went).

So, if you are really bothered about us under 18s being on the site (and I ain\'t just talking about the Youngbloods - plenty of people here are 15, 16 or 17, eg. James Sequeira...), put stronger restrictions or a parental consent system in. But I expect a large part of the user demographic (registered or not) is under 18, and it\'d be bad for the site to lose that. Plus, I\'d have to leave, and I really enjoy it here (I\'m sure you\'d all miss me tool  )

Well, those are my thoughts, take them as you wish :D

I expect the 18-year-old thing is more to do with legal adults and such, rather than adult content. Until you\'re 18 (depends on the country, I expect) your parents are legally responsible for you, and that\'s what I expect the age limit is all about. Now, we know you\'re responsible (responsible for quite a bit actually ;) ), so I doubt it\'s anything you need to be concerned about.

Store keepers any where don\'t even raise an eyewhen I buy magazines in the off lisence that are worse than that. Chill.

Oh btw, I pretty sure that in the UK, your parents are legally responsible for you until you are 16. Which is then when you have left compulsory schooling, are viable to get a full time job (if you have the grades), chose college, do other stuff ;) and even get married. Sorry, just had to state that.

No... there is another very effective way to make ads go away, such as actually buying a subscription, which costs you $1 a month, probably less than what it cost in terms of man hours to write your rant in the first place.

So, in effect what you are is someone who:
1. Doesn\'t view the ads
2. Doesn\'t buy a subscription
3. Doesn\'t contribute pictures to the site.
4. Doesn\'t even participate in the forums.

And you\'re talking like it\'s a big deal if you decide to stop browsing? Hello, do I owe you something that I\'m not aware of?

You are in a completely different category to non-subscribing members of our community, who I think are generally great and DO contribute pennies a month to the site via viewing the ads.

Not only are you a freeloader (who I generally don\'t mind), you\'re a freeloader who COMPLAINS. Heavens to betsy, that\'s just fantastic. I can see why you think you should be my new favourite person.

I tell you what, please stop visiting the site, it\'ll save bandwidth and processing for everyone else, and you won\'t have to be burdened by all the ads, and I won\'t feel irritated enough to rewrite everything so that the site won\'t run with the ads blocked.

TERMS OF PARTICIPATION
1. Use of CoolMiniOrNot is available only to individuals who can form legally binding contracts under applicable law. This excludes in all cases minors (persons who have not reached their eighteenth birthday).

If you read the terms and conditions they actually spell out quite clearly why there is an age requirement.
Signing up to Coolminiornot membership is an agreement to conform to the Terms and Conditions and therefore legally binding.
While in UK law, being 13 means you are Legally Responsible for your actions, it doesn\'t mean you can enter into a legally binding agreement.

Its HERE if anyone wants to read it.

Edit: Sorry hit Post instead of Preview.
This is not meant as a dig at you Bill, or anyone else who is below 18. Just attempting to answer your question.
