What is a Gaming Table Quality Paint job - Level 5 on the Vote Rating? Changes are Needed!

Please, tsnake, don\'t hold back - tell us what you REALLY feel lol

\"Tabletop quality\" to me means you wouldn\'t be ashamed to field it against opponents who aren\'t already your good friends. Sadly, this idea is not helpful for voting here (I would consider 5.5-6 to be my personal minimum tabletop standard - if I was a gamer!) so I try and vote by the de facto community standards we seem to have established here (i.e. 5=neatly painted, some shading, some basing, generally doesn\'t look like ass).

This too is how I\'ve voted. In fact, I find it hard to give a lower than 5 vote for any mini that looks like it was covered and attempted to be shaded and highlighted, unless it\'s super clumpy. (though, I\'d rather see solid black eyes than really bad ones)

I do vote lower on pix that are small enough that I believe they easily hide flaws, and that includes some of the minis that seem to rate really high with others. When I see someone post are large and up-close-and-personal image of their minis, I\'ve gotta give credit for the risk they are taking.

I do notice that on the other end of the spectrum, some people give 10s too easily. I think a 1-4 should really mean the mini is slightly embarassing and a 10 is really something special.

I do think browsing at 7+ is a mistake, there are some really interesting minis on this site which score between 5-6 *cough including some of mine cough cough*. Though recent events make me want to browse at 4+ at least :(

None of this is for me to say that there aren\'t some minis here that really are horrible. Honestly, I wonder what\'s on the mind of someone who posts a mini that\'s got large places without even paint on the thing, or whatnot, but the fact that there are such LOW end/quality minis on here, I find it impossible to justify some people\'s rating scales where they will damn near arbitrarily rate one a 1 or 2 for being as I described and then give a 3 or 4 to one that HAS been neatly done with attempts at shading, highlighting, etc.

As for my low participation in the forums... well, I usually find what I want without needing to ask and for the most part, I don\'t have a lot to offer tip wise as I\'m still not up to par with some others that do put together quality tutorials and commentary.

well I dunnno if the trend for harsher voting on CMON is a good thing or not.... on one hand it does encourage painters to do a lot better and it also means that more and more painters of varying degrees of expertise are getting their works posted up.

on the other hand I think it does discourage painters who are on the learning trail....

I mean...personally no matter how much I say votes dont really matter... well when I look at some of my minis I just cant help but feel some kinda twinge of.... I dunno.... unfairness?

I do think I have improved quite a fair bit but er.... I seldom see the comments or votes on my regular minis to let me know where I have done better and where I have not....

sometimes I kinda look at it all and feel weird... a mini painted 1 year ago has roughly the same score as a mini painted now.... scoring wise it leaves me headscratching at times at the standard ppl line up minis against. :(

Vincegamer:\"On the other hand, it used to take months for one of my minis to get 50 votes and thus affect my ranking but the other day I posted one and in one day it had 40+ votes.\"

I noticed this as well with the last two that I posted and put it down to possibly becoming better known but then I haven\'t got that many mini\'s posted compared to some people on the list.

I don\'t have a problem with getting low marks if they are deserved and the people voting leave a comment to say why but deliberate sniping because they are not into anything other than say 40K and you have posted something that they are not into or haven\'t heard about or don\'t read the description about scale or the mini itself is not really on.

Maybe a rule whereby if you vote low on a mini then you have to leave a comment to say why otherwise your vote does\'t count count! Just a thought.;)

It would be nice to be able to grade a mini
7.5 instead of 7 , what I see happening all
the time is minis in the 5 to 7 rating range
are graded a full grade lower than where
they should be.
Also I think if someone is going to leave a
grade of 5 , at least leave a constructive
comment on improvement.

You could always give the mini a 7 and an 8. Technically, that becomes 2 votes at 7.5, but if you really want that level of precision, it\'s available.

The final word... (I hope!)

Enough already!!!

My words echo the same sentiment that Lurch experessed in an earlier post, but I do think they need repeating one last time...

IT IS JUST A VOTE !!!!!!!!!

Everyone here needs to relax, practice some circular breathing techniques, and repeat the mantra as follows \"It\'s only a vote, it\'s only a vote...\"

In this big world of ours, the vote someone receives or gives on a mini does not matter. Yes, when we do a really nice piece and post it, we all like to receive a pat on the back and a few nice comments. It also is inspiring to see some of the great artist here, and pick up some of their techniques to guide us into self growth, but really far too much time and effort is spent on voting, ways to improve voting, and the unfairness of it all. Please give it a rest, stop caring about other people\'s opinion and paint for the fun of it. Pure enjoyment, isn\'t that what a hobby is all about? If you vote, and I do, just be fair and honest. If the mini stinks in you opinion, rate it as such, if it is outstanding, give it a great score and the occasional comment. Be kind and treat others the way you wish to be treated, and please stop worrying if your mini is a 5, or maybe a 5.3, or really it should be a 6.2 cause if it were a Rackham instead of a GW mini it would score better, and the sunlight was bad or my camera is only a 2.0 megapixel and if I had a 4.0 megapixel camera and used Photoshop......(you get the point)

Well that\'s just my opinion, I could be wrong...

True words Braveheart! But if that ends up being the final word, I\'ll eat my stethoscope!

lol

Sadly , 4 is the average paint level for gaming

Base colour with ink and highlight is in my opinion worth a 5. Most younger Wargamers (and they are the majority) paint a 4 .
Since i.m.h.o wargames standard used by most people is an 4.5 , the 5(as an whole number) is OK .

Mini painting is an artistic venture and there is really no NON-subjective way to vote on creative undertakings, especially not in an open and anarchistic setting like the internet. :)

Fairness and consistency, that\'s about the best we can hope for - and \"hope\" is the operative word.

PS - I\'d like to ompliment figura_obscura for having the courage to make his first post in such a contentious topic. Welcome aboard.
