What is the difference between \"Satin\" and \"Matte\" varnish ?

The first should dry with a satin finish, the latter with a matt finish.

:D

Satin is another name for semi-matt, usually has a slight sheen but how glossy it is will depend on the brand.

I\'ve bought \'matte\' finish spray paint that was glossy so you just need to test a few to see what you like. If you want totally matte, go for Games Workshop Matte varnish; it\'s a fullsize can that works great like testors, but testors comes in a little can.

Actually, GW\'s Matt Varnish tends to give a rather \"dusty\" finish under most circumstances for me. I\'m gonna try again these days. But I still can\'t wait to get my hands on some Testors soon...

I painted a really nice mini and finished him with GW matt varnish and all the sheene on the armor went flat gray on me, What a disaster. I do agree about the dusty look too. I\'m not knocking GW just living and learning. Is there a good finish that will keep flats flat and shiny metalics gleaming?

I agree with GW matt. It kills the metals. I dont use it anymore. Im trying to find and alternative but cant find anything yet. Any ideas. I live in Oz so some of the european stuff I cant get.

I used to use GW\'s matte spray, but now I found Testor\'s and it\'s MUCH better. Testor\'s Dullcoat is more matte than GW\'s and it gives a much better finish to the painted surfaces. I don\'t use metallic paints much, so I can\'t vouch for how it treats metallic surfaces, but otherwise it\'s the best varnish I\'ve used.

I use armory paint on varnishes.
I have matt, satin and glossy.
Think of it as a graduated scale, with matt at one end and glossy at the other. Satin is in the middle.

Here\'s an example of how I used them all in one mini.
Ever been to a horse show? Owners brush their horses with an oil to make them shine, but obviously horses don\'t shine like polished metal.
So,
I painted a warmaster HE chariot.
The elves and the wood parts were varnished matt.
The horses were varnished satin.
The gems and metals were varnished glossy.

The differences were pretty clear in person, though maybe not so clear in photographs, though you can tell the difference between matt and satin in the second from the bottom pic where the horse\'s rump and the chariot are next to each other.

(remember, these are warmaster so very tiny)

Thank you for all the replies!

I give my models a coat of GW \'ardcoat to protect them, and then a layer of \"Mr. Hobby\" Flat varnish, and finished the shiny part off with some brush-applied Vallejo Gloss varnish.

My problem was that the Flat coat often turned milky in some places (eventhough I made sure the humidity was below 70% before spraying) - so now I bougth some Model Master (Testors) Dullcote (in a bottle - the cans can´t be bought in Denmark because of import-problems with antiterror-laws).

I tried this, and it is really god and simple - so from now on I will spray \'Ardcoat, apply MM Dullcote with a brush, and then pick out the shiny parts with vallejo Gloss varnish.
