What kicks off the season?

For me, it\'s the bitching and griping that my sister-in-law\'s family starts over who gets to host who for christmas lunch. EVeryone wants to feed everyone else the same sorry, half-arsed gammon or turkey as they did last year. Christmas falls in the middle of summer on this side of the world. 32C is not time for a hot lunch - that\'s winter food.

The office party... mine is tomorrow. If I could, I\'d go back to my desk and work instead. I work with these people, I don\'t choose to socialise with them.

and the list goes on... I\'d rather do without christmas.

Fortunately, this year, I\'m skiing in Austria, and can forego christmas entirely. :)

Christmas feeling is putting up the lights outside the house and the bric a brac inside. Every year a hassle at Saturday before the 1. Advent (the first Sunday of four until the 24. December, custom in Germany). Every year the same quarrel about \'why bother at all\', every year the same quarrel about the bunting \'the twigs are no good this year, too flimsy and already loosing needles\" and grudgingly the festivities are put up, usually finished at about midnight. Going to bed exhausted.
Waking up the next morning to a beautiful new decorated christmassy home. Its like a revelation ! Putting it up is a pain in the ass, but having it up is pure bliss.

Wonderful Christmas time.

Nothing says Christmas to me like a certain smell. It\'s not pine needles, it\'s not those icky scented things you get, it\'s not even the smell of Chrismass dinner or mince pies. No it\'s BIN BAGS lollollollol

Waking up Chrismas morning and delving into the big black plastic bin bag that \"Santa\" had left outside my bedroom door so I wouldn\'t wake them up at 4 in the morning has etched their particular smell so deep in my subconsious that I get that festive feeling all year round whenever I change the liner in the kitchen bin... of course it\'s not quite the same when it\'s filled with rubbish....

\"It\'s a Wonderful Life\" gotta see it once.
then watch Ralphie shoot his eye out.

And all the old claymation/stop motion/animated specials:
Rudolph
Grinch
Frosty

Are we talking about the dept.stores setting up their trees in September or about when I start to do my \"bah!humbug\" routine.:p

What kicks off the season here is the Mid November phonecall from my inlaws asking what we are doing this year, what can they buy the kids etc.
A day later my parents call pestering about the same thing.

And so it begins.... Kids\' plays, family photos, Santa visits and photos, sneaking off to get presents, arguing about tree placement, cursing the weather for being too cold to set up the lights outside, and snow...Lotsa snow.
:)

Sorry - definately in the Humbug brigade as well - since I try to walk the walk and talk the talk year round, watching the fake arse individuals try to be nice to each other because of the season kinda pisses me off.

I don\'t mind humbugs as long as they aren\'t Scrooges. People like you earn the right to humbug a bit.

Have a cookie anyway! Or some Eggnog!:drunk:

I think you, Dr, and I should start our own group. We can have our first meeting. I\'ll bring the Chivas and jim Beam black label. You can bring het cigars, and Dr can bring food.

What would we do at our first meeting? Watch movies? Complain about the man?
I can bring the cheerleaders and the trampoline from the man cave. Errrr...just in case conversation slows down.:innocent:

I\'m not really sure anymore! For the past 3 years the 25th has been another day spent at work for me. Neither my GF (Japanese) nor her kids (also Japanese) understand the \'Western\' concept of Christmas.

I did go home the first year I was here but recently haven\'t been home. Gotta say it\'s a pretty depressing time since I know everyone back in the UK is having fun while I\'m fixing network related IT badness. *sigh*.

The worst thing about it is, my GF works too so going to work is a much better option than staying at home since I\'m around people who are equally depressed.

Can\'t say I\'ve ever had a \"Rum Ball\", but they sound like I should be signing up for one or two and making sure I have a taxi to get home

Seriously off the same songsheet here with you Lloyd, which is one of the reason I desest the \"Falseness\" that occurs this time of year.
If you can\'t be Pleasant, Thoughtful or Generous the rest of the year don\'t try to make up for it for a few days.
If you\'re gonna be a Mensch at this time of year, be a Mensch all year.
