What makes a miniature line successful?

Copyrights? Right, if you\'re not familiar with it you better read up on it. Here are some links to put in your favotires:

Also check out \"trademark\", since that sometimes gets confused with IP.

You\'re asking that because you want to know if drawings you put on internet are protected, right? Well, copyright is yours as soon as you\'ve made the design.
Things is though that the idea behind the drawing is not protected. You\'ve mentioned wanting to do special races. Well, from the way I understand it, if you show those races and people like the idea, there is nothing to keep others from pinching the idea and release them themselves. They just can\'t use your designs nor base it on things which are recognisably your design. To take the famous example of space marines, GW is the only one who has the right to make the space marines in their style. But everybody can make power armoured, genetically modified, brainwashed space soldiers. As long as they don\'t incorporate things that are recognisably GW\'s designs (which is the error that Canadian company (Enigma?) made).

By the way, 1listsculpting is a good place to as these kind of questions. As well as other questions that have to do with starting and running a miniature company. I\'m not saying that because I\'m a moderator there ;) but because of the very large number of professionals amongst the members. Not just sculptors but any type of professional that has to do with miniatures. Designers, casters, game designers, company owners, etc. You\'ll find them to be very helpfull and it\'s a good way of getting to know people in the industry (and you\'ll see that when you\'re in that circle that the world is a small place. :) ).

I\'ve also noticed that professionals regularly react to questions over at the miniature pages, so you may want to try that forum too: http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/topics.mv?id=31

WooHoo! Almost done withmy first green..... he just needs weapons, hands, hair and a belt buckle. :D Can\'t wait to post pics. :D This one will not be representative of what I have ben talking about in this thread however.. It is just a generic barabrian type done to begin my portfolio.

Thanks for the offer Minigrrl if I ever get to that point I will let you know.

Provoke_me.... I am toying around with a few ideas for races in this new world. So far I have three nailed down, defined in broad general terms, a hulking Man race, a decadent elf like race, and a feral imp race...... saounds REALLY original so far huh? lollol ANyway you guys will see here before anywhere else when I get this stuff together.

minimaker.... I am in the US and no I have no experience in sculpting for casting.. However I have read A LOT of tuts and articles on the subject so I THINK I have that issue well in hand.... No deep undercuts and a pretty much continuos \" hemispheric \" divide

@Sigil, I\'ll pm you the address of a US caster where you can probably arrange for your sculpt to \"share\" a mould for a cheap price. I think it\'s good experience to go through the steps.

Do you know the Visions in putty projects? We set those up partly to allow sculptors the opportunity to have their sculpts cast. Here is the official site: http://miniature-painting.net/visions_main.html if you\'ve never been there it could be interesting to check the articles that go with VIP 1. They show the mouldmaking proces.

Many Thanks minimaker. I have visited the VIP site and looked through several articles there.... Actually that was the first place I read about the process of casting.

I will certainly let you know if I do get my fig cast. :D
